The gi slows things down, there are more grips, more weapons, more danger. No-Gi is popular because it’s so much easier to defend. Do no-gi to work on offense, gi to work on defense. To those saying nobody wears a gi on the street, jackets, hoodies, sweaters, flannels and even t-shirts can be used for gi grips and submissions.

I know the gi BJJ places push this theory but it's pretty risky grabbing at people's flannels thin jackets, shirts, etc. that rip and/or stretch fairly easily. You are taking way more of a chance trying that kind of stuff instead of using your nogi techniques. Of course I understand that all the gi BJJ places need to sell their art so they have to tell students that (and probably even convince themselves of that). I notice a big reason they like the gi is because it creates a huge discrepancy between new people and the more experienced. That way every new big, strong wrestler or "street fighter" can't just come in a crush people. They have no idea what the gi player is doing so it makes the gi player feel safer and better about himself.

@@Rico702Vegas 1. if your definition of "cold" entails (guesstimate) ~80% of the planet throughout ~80% of the year, but that's not how most people understand the term 2. it's easier to use no-gi techniques when you already know gi than vice versa 3. liking gi or not is a matter of taste, but it's beyond the point. some people don't like grappling altogether and that's fine by me too

I feel like Gi is also better for injuries (both in terms of prevention as well as protection existing, hopefully minor injuries). Some say that No Gi is better suited for self-defence, but it depends. Of course many techniques like lapel guards will be useless on the street, but on the other hand an average attacker is likely to be wearing some clothes, and so are you (!). Especially if you don't live in sunny Brazil. It's also arguably easier to transfer from Gi to No Gi, should you want to one day, than the other way round.
@derrickrobinson72692 жыл бұрын
Controlling sweaty people in NoGi is a skill of its own though. As well as taking advantage of the opening being made during said escape. NoGi definitely requires you to have great timing because Windows of opportunities cannot be artificially extended

I personally think people make too much out of the difference between gi and no gi. Sure they can be completely different but it really just depends how you train. I train both but mainly train in the gi. I don’t overly rely on gi grips though because I want my gi and no gi game to essentially be the same. A lot of old school guys train this way, guys like Matt Serra and Marcelo Garcia have talked about this a lot. At the end of the day train what you want and have fun. Awesome video!

Gi and NoGi have evolved into their own thing now, and that's fine. That just means there's more to choose from for potential practicioners. Neither is more or less technical, it's just different. The thought of getting a blue belt from only training nogi is silly. You literally never wear a belt lmao Why do we hold onto these things as they become irrelevant?
@bane39912 жыл бұрын
If it's ridiculous to get promoted without a gi because they don't wear a belt. Would it not be ridiculous to change the color of a belt? You already got the belt, why change the color? I'll answer that. Because the belt signifies a certain level of skill, time spent on the mat, knowledge of jiu jitsu, etc. Same way a degree from college is a measuring stick for how well you know a particular subject.
@Nixcb22 жыл бұрын
@@bane3991 I don't need the speech lmao it's a hollow form of credentialism much like many college degrees. I teach gi and nogi and while it's helpful to mark success surely, it's still just as silly as having a "black belt" in muay thai. It's silly.
@bane39912 жыл бұрын
@@Nixcb2 I think you do need the speech because you're saying no gi guys don't wear belts so why would you promote them with it but I can say why change the color of the white belt if all it does is keep the gi together? Because the belt doesn't just keep the gi together, it's more than that. So how exactly is it silly if it's a form of credential? Would you rather us get a diploma for each belt? I only train no gi. I put on the gi maybe 15x in my whole life when I 1st started years ago. No gi jiu jitsu still stems from the background of brazilian jiu jitsu which has the ranking system as a form of tradition. If they wanted to give rank in Muay Thai to show a students knowledge, what's wrong with that? The belt system is a long time tradition in numerous martial arts. When you think of a black belt, you think of martial arts which does include muay thai. If you told someone on the outside that someone is black belt in muay thai they wouldn't think anything of it because muay thai is a martial art. The reason it sounds ridiculous to give a black belt in muay thai is because it's not part of their tradition. How would you like us to gauge skill level? Should we get stickers? Ribbons? Diplomas? Since it's silly in your mind to give out belts to no gi guys. What's the alternative?
@Nixcb22 жыл бұрын
@@bane3991 I'm consistent with my views here...I think that the belt system in jiujitsu is also silly but it can be useful for children and adults who are less driven that are helped by a marked system of progression. The nature of the system can be arbitrary and the belt system is a bit less silly for jiujitsu because at least you wear a belt. Just because something can be useful doesn't mean that its not silly at the end of the day. Jiujitsu did not originally award belts of varying colors...this is something that was adopted many decades after it was founded to make the art more marketable for martial arts gyms. You want it to mean more because you value the symbolism. I don't fault you for that if it helps you keep training but it doesn't mean much outside that...even with respect to the history of jiujitsu. To answer your last question I think time on the mat is the only relevant metric that isnt silly and that is reflected in the fact that many nogi tournaments use time trained as the way to separate beginner and advanced brackets. The reason I say I dont need the speech is because I own a gym that awards the normal belt colors per IBJJF standards and we even have a curriculum to get to blue belt. I still find it silly but this is the world we live in...people expect to see belts and if you want your students to compete in tournaments you have to play within the rules. I also do not like the term nogi but I use it because it is the most recognizable term. I prefer submission grappling/wresting because it is more accurate. Submission grappling has been greatly affected by jiujitsu but it does not solely stem from it. I don't think there is necessarily anything "wrong" with any system of marked progression even if you wanted to award belt levels for muay thai but I do think its silly for sure. I also think my engineering degree is silly...at least the piece of paper its written on is. What's not silly is the intensive process that it took to get it. As long as you're teaching real techniques and training systems that's all that matters to me. I think that's my whole point...I'm giving you my opinion about symbolism in martial arts and I dont like it personally. I started training in muay thai and then in MMA for maybe 10 years before I put on a gi and there were no belts, awards, or stickers. I believe there can be negatives to systems of marked progression that have to deal with overconfidence and pride but at the end of the day if you're training thats what matters irrespective of whatever step of the process you're at or how you want to mark it.
