I was 260 lbs and very depressed, I went and signed up for BJJ at my local Gracie gym, it helped me loose all the weight I built my confidence and made tons of friends. I now train 5 days per week and weight 180 lbs and have defeated my depression. I can't thank the Gracie's enough for changing my life. If it wasn't for BJJ I would be dead. Thank you for everything

This has really put things in perspective for me. I'm extremely overweight and I have wanted to do something like this for forever, but I've always been hesitant to do so because, I guess, of embarrassment or whatever. Perhaps this week will be the week I walk into a training school and make jiu-jitsu my lifestyle. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this. It definitely came at the right time for me.

Still a lot more work to be done though. I'm only 5'7 so I'd like be down around 150-160. There's success stories left and right in my academy. One kid went from 215-149

Since training in bjj, I've gone from 82kg down to 74kg. I never did much cardio. I was strong (I weight train) but wasn't fit. Oh boy did my fitness improve. Weight dropped off me. Never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I did. I was hooked on my first lesson. I only went along to give my friend support, so he wasn't going alone. He stopped going and I carried on lol always look forward to my next lesson 😊

you know its really funny when something comes out of nowhere. My son has been doing jujitsu for between football seasons for 2 years. He recently moved up to adult classes due to his size as a 13 yr old. After a couple of months I got talked into joining by his coaches by the same "just do what you can" mentality. Now (42 yrs old), I am only a month and a half in. I started at 280lbs and down to 266lbs with the assistance of keto. I feel great, I feel like this is my time to destress, have fun, and bond with my son and others in class. I could not be happier in making the decision to join in. Al you are in an inspiration, and I hope sometime in the future I can be that same inspiration to the next generation. God Bless!

I have always been big I. Middle school I was 180, high school 235, college 282 and work 360. I got a concession and went to the hospital to find out I was having heart problems, liver and they were saying I can become diabetic. So I got depressed felt like this it I'm done. My friend moved back and we started watching BJJ videos. He showed me this and I was like I'm lose cause. Then a fellow teacher asked me to help with a wrestling team and he said you can lose the weight. I went, and the coach is a BJJ guy. I started to talk to him about it and if I can do it. I got a gi (come on we need some bigger gis) I started at a BJJ club once a week after a while I wanted more and more and more. I started running for fun exercising and stretching daily. Watching none stop Gracie videos. Stoped drinking alcohol and cut back on soda. Started eating fruit and not candy and kept craving bjj. I lost 35lbs in 4 months found a gym where the conchs are supporting me and helping me through my asthma. I know do BJJ 2-3 times a week, went back to my karate studio (grew up there as a kid kept me off the streets loyal and need to give back) 2 week, gym 2 week and meet with a friend and run 2 miles every Saturday. And I'm enjoying my life now. No longer depressed, no longer feeling like loser. I'm more confident and happy!!! Thank you for the inspiration. I re-ran into this video and watched it agin. I will admit it brought tears to me because I felt like a lose cause and now I'm living my new life. The jiuJitsu life.

Started BJJ at a Gracie University school about three months ago. I was unmotivated, fat, depressed, and I had horrible social skills. Jiujitsu has helped me with my life in every way imaginable, I’ve lost 60 pounds and am losing more everyday, I feel a surge of confidence and have been improving myself everyday. I’ve become kinder, sharper, more amicable and have gained a support group in my fellow gym members and fighters. Thank you Ryron and Rener, when you guys see my coach; tell him that he’s made my life a better one.

I hate seeing people talk about working out like it's a time of the day you need to forget about, and it always needs to be exhausting... To be honest, the reason why BJJ and Muay Thai end up being great workouts, are because training and learning new things are so fun to me. People should pick a sport they like and will enjoy, and go with it. Sports are meant to be fun and recreational, not tedious and boring

I needed to watch this video! I recently signed up my 5 year old daughter for MMA. Which has really motivated me to also want to train. I'm 44 years old, 6'4" 320, and I've always battled weight since the end of my college football days. I'm excited to start and learn, but a bit nervous at the same time. I was close to 400lbs at one point, and in the past 1.5 years I've got down to that 320 mark. Being more active, and going to a KETO/Low Carb lifestyle change. With a left shoulder injury, w/ two should surgeries and knee arthritis from the years of football. My goal is to get down to 220, and learn combative Gracie BJJ. I want to be an example to my daughter, and train with her. How about Gi's? I need a big boy one, :) Any advice for a Big Guy beginner like me who wants to start this journey at 44? I'm competitive by nature, coming from years of football and baseball. But this right here is a whole new world! :D

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, But how do you keep exercising studying, etc when you're depressed or numb. I am suffering from Bipolar disorder and so I get a few weeks or so when I'm good, I work, study, exercise and its really rewarding, but when I'm low, like now I "feel nothing" :/ Reading and exercising is fine while I'm doing it, but the second I stop I'm down to nothing, and its really hard getting motivated to do anything :( Any advice? I'm working with a shrink and we're trying to narrow down something that works, but in the meantime, Life really sucks

I've tried reasoning with myself, that seeing as I dont feel anything, I might as well, study and exercise, since it doesnt matter either way. But in addition to losing motivation to do stuff, seeing as theres no emotional reward, this emotional state also makes it hard even "painful" to be around other people. I have to fake feelings for the benefit of others and its really draining. Sorry for wining, but maybe someone here has some experience with this and has some advice

***** Thanks, I tried jiu jitsu for a few weeks, it was a lot of fun and it did alleviate my social anxiety which before then had been so strong that I could barely get out of the house and into class. But I had a crash due to stress and I havent been able to get back since. Partly out of shame, because of the assumtions everyone makes about my absence and now partly because I have a difficult time enough getting to school and work. Some is due to medical conditions and should be resolved by christmas, but others are merely psychological and in someways harder to deal with

I don't have a cure but I have had similar issues myself. One thing you could do is make sure you are eating exceptionally well, that will help with your energy levels. And if you say doing BJJ lessons made you feel better but you've since stopped then I think you absolutely have to go back, it'll be hard to take that step again but you did it before, there's no reason to believe that going back to BJJ will be a negative experience. Negativity is not part of the BJJ philosophy and so i'm sure you can go back and if anyone asks you simply tell them you had some other things getting in your road, it's not of their business if you don't want to make it their business.

I'm 265lbs right now. I'm currently fixing up my garage to make it a gym. Already enrolled in Gracy University so I'm hoping the side benefit is losing weight.

I am interested in starting BJJ, but I am hesitant like he was due to my weight. I am much heavier than him though. At 400# I am terrified honestly of being embarassed by not being able to do anything once I get there.

Roger Collard There will surely be some limitations, but if you are up for the challenge it can surely be beneficial. I would recommend going to a school and asking to observe a few beginner and fundamental drilling classes. Most schools are great about allowing this. Then bring up your concerns with the instructor. Hopefully there is some great schools near you that will have a great instructor willing to face the challenge with you.

mpaz thanks for the support! Actually the school is owned by my cousin who is a pro MMA fighter. he knows about my fears and is super supportive. I absolutely intend on starting within the next few weeks. Thank you again for the reply and support. I am really excited to become part of the BJJ family.

I'm sorry to say I haven't yet. i take care of my 76 year old mom who has COPD and Emphysema. her health has not been great lately and between Dr. appointments, breathing treatments, etc. and being an hour away from my cousins school it has been pretty hard. i am hoping to start within the next week or so. Thanks for keeping me in check!!

Jits help me lose 50lbs in a year. But it just cost too much. My wife had medical bills and had to drop jits. I wish there was somewhere that was less than 100 a month.

My fatass needs to do something like this. I've gained almost 70 lbs from having spinal fusion surgery 2 years ago and still in pain. No drugs, I just deal with this shit everyday and I'm at my breaking point. Not sure if there's a BJJ near me and honestly I don't know that I can make myself go for fear of embarrassment but right now I'm not living. I'm just existing and taking up space.
