I had the priviledge of playing 1 on 1 against a D1 player that had played over seas for years (currently playing in CBL). I am 6'2" and so was the guy I was playing against. I realized the difference between player skill levels during that game. If I closed out his three, he would drive. Controlled movements, no wasted dribbles or steps, a sure layup regardless of contact. If I backed off a little (to give me a chance on the drive because he had a very fast first step) he WOULD make the three. Those threes were like warm ups for him. There was no chance of like "maybe I can half close out, and he will miss." No. If I was not contesting in a way that would alter his form, that three was going in. It was eye opening to me how glaring my own weaknesses were. I play a lot of pick up against players I thought were pretty good, but that level is something else.

It's so damn easy. If the defense level is higher in college ball and NBA doesn't play that hard on defense, many rookies just out of college should be in the all-defensive team, or at least be great at defense. On the contrary, most have a hard time adjusting to NBA level defense cause it's a whole new level of tactics, inhumane range, unreal guys like KD, Giannis who defy logic.

@@recoil53 one thing that does bother me is when D1 athletes are looked down upon in terms of their abilities. Are they as talented as the pros? Of course not, but often times, people make it seem like it's just average joe's out there playing. Like no, these are still some of the best athletes in their respective sports. And the skill gap from even D3 or D2 is also insane relative to D1. I love it when you talk to some home-town hardo who was a quality HS player who's like "yeah, I could have played D1". Yeah - sure you could have buddy. Funny example of this whole thing: kid I played against in High school was a near 3,000 point scorer and shot something like 68% from three his senior year in HS. He went to a very, very mediocre state school program and played D1. He couldn't even sniff the court. Ended up transferring after a few years to a D2 or D3 school just to get playing time. And to me, that kid was 10-15x better than I could have ever been. Like you said, if you aren't there or haven't played against people like that relative to your own talent levels it's hard to conceptualize. But when you see it and feel it you know. You're just like - damn...I could play for 1,000 years and never be close to this guys skill level, play-style etc.

I saw some very talented players never get playing time they deserve because they had beef with our point guard off court and never got looks. Some of the best guys I played with never got playing time because of politics and burn out that comes from it. It’s definitely not just about talent. If your HS buddy made to a D1 roster he was definitely capable. I heard Dwayne Wade say it a while back that so much has to go right to make it all the way through to the pros. Similarly to how JJ pointed out the math differences in the games that automatically result in more scoring, there's a math reason for why the college sets haven't evolved...the distance of the three point line. In order to get NBA level spacing you would have to both initiate college offenses further away, and have spot up shooters set up further behind the three point line. Only teams who can simultaneously recruit quick athletes who also can shoot with range would be able to run modern sets.

One thing to consider here is that if Blake entered the league today, it likely would be as a guy that grew up knowing he had to put emphasis into his outside shot/shot creation. On any college teams, even the best ones, you will find one or two guys who can't shoot from more than 15 feet. And often one of those guys can't shoot from anywhere but right outside the rim. NBA players are longer. The little sub 6 foot guards you see all the time in college lighting it up? One in a thousand of those make an impact in the NBA cause all the others get eaten up by the NBA defender's length. So to hack it in the NBA as a guard you need more size and athleticism or a ridiculous amount of skill relative to other pros. Ask Jimmer how soft NBA defenses are.

Man I'm so done with people who don't understand basketball saying that defense was better in the 90s. I grew up watching and studying the game since 93. We are privileged to be watching the most talented time period in NBA history. But it's not just that. The ridiculous range of 3 point shots and the step back 3 has ruined the ability to play low scoring D. They didn't shoot 3s in the 90s. It just wasn't a part of the game much. Do you have any idea how much easier it is guard 1/2 the court instead of 2/3rds like now? They didn't even have to guard the 3 point line seriously. The spacing today means to be elite on D your guys have to be on a pinpoint switching string. Like, you have to absolutely know that the guy you're dropping is going to be picked up without a second thought or you will be late. These guys are too good and too fast. Also, the best thing the league did was disallow hand checking. That stuff was wack. I am just sad they ever allowed it. Now I never got to see just how crazy MJ could score without it. It's mind blowing how much he could score while being fouled constantly. Without shooting 3s 40 points a game would be on the table in today's game. It would be awesome.

Television has warped the ability of fans to fully understand the abilities of professional athletes, especially basketball players. The first time I saw NBA players up close I was blown away by how big they were, and how fast and how smoothly they moved. And that was just at warmup speed!

I find this to be a bug in the NBA officiating. The NBA, on the other hand, loves doing whatever it can to make games higher scoring, so they are so loose with continuation. So they treat it not as a bug but a feature.

I’ve played with tj warren, the Martin twins, John wall, pj tucker. The talent level between them and even good d1 guys is insane. Even beyond the obvious skill, their decision making and thought processes are far beyond anybody lesser. When wall would play with us, it was between high school and Kentucky, that summer which was 2010 I believe . He’d score at ease every possession and literally nobody could do anything about it, regular guys couldn’t even intentionally foul him and stop it lol

I think people vastly underestimate just how complicated NBA offense and defense are today. Defense is hard because the offensive plays are insanely effective when implemented by NBA players (especially the stars). If they were facing college level defense any NBA team will score 150 points (using NBA rules). The best teams might score 170+ on any given night.

The guy later went on to be a #1 overall draft pick and is still in the league today. But I just remember how shocking his talent was when he just started to get good. You really have to be in the inner circles to really grasp the hierachies in skill levels.

Luc Mbah a Moute was never considered a scorer in the NBA but when this dude comes back to Cameroon..........not a single player in the local league can guard him. Dude be hitting step back 3's, fadeaways, crossover + hesi + step back combos and all. It's hilarious watching guys get upset and storm out the court.

The NBA is a completely different level, almost to the point that it’s not even the same game. That said, I prefer college because of the amped up atmosphere and the shorter season means that regular season games are more important. It is an inferior product for sure, but I enjoy it.

It’s a playing style difference also NBA is a lot of mismatch hunting and playing out of the P/R. Also a lot more 3s are put up so just based off the sheer volume of shots being taken and mismatches being created which lead to better quality shots that’s why it is higher scoring than college.

Here's this thing people say about NBA shooters that basically sums up how different they are from normal basketball players: when their arms are in the upswing motion of their shooting stroke, the closeout doesn't really matter unless they get blocked by some crazy athlete, that's basically an open shot for them. You don't see that consistently in any other level.

Watching this Boston series vs the nets where KD has been scoring less and less I’d be pressed if someone said it wasn’t the defense boston is running. I don’t recall this happening in the Nets/Boston reg season series. Almost like they were waiting for the playoffs to unload it on an S tier offensive threat before the nets could adjust

Bro if you watch the NBA and then watch the tournament, you can see exactly what JJ is talking about. College basketball doesn’t evolve, the court is a bit smaller so that’s probably a part of why the spacing hasn’t evolved but still, these systems have been the same forever. And the gap between NBA players and 99% of D1 players is MASSIVE. Yeah there might be slightly more effort in the tournament compared to the regular season of the NBA, but the defense is 100% better in the NBA.

Players are more talented because the rules of the game allow them to be. JJ made no mention of the several rule changes over the years that allow for a more finesse style of play. Flagrant fouls didn’t even exist until 91. It’s hard to be 40% from long range with an elbow in your rib cage.
