"Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!" How can any Top Ten not include at least one entry from the "Carry On" franchise? I must nominate "Carry on Cleo" for what is unversally recognised as the worst pun in cinematic history.
@Varksterable6 ай бұрын
Not only any top ten - but 'Top 10 _British_ _Comedy_ Films'. To miss out on all of the many, many Carry On films is pretty much heresy. Cringe-worthy (i.e. early British) comedy, ludicrous yet somehow topical plots, loads of puns, lashes of innuendo and an absolutely iconic set of actors from the day. The only thought needed to put one of these on the list is to pick one; that's pretty hard - although I do agree that without watching them all again, "Carry on Cleo" is a firm contender. I'm guessing it's a typical MojoMumboJumbo list; probably sourced from somewhere else with little understanding of what it actually means. After all, nobody would expect them to research or have knowledge of _all_ British comedy films. There's simply too many great ones. "Withnail & I" certainly seems to divide opinions. Even from the little bits I've seen I know it's just not for me. It's a Marmite of a film. IMDB - 7.5. 'Nuff said.

I think I watched the remake of Ladykillers once, purely out of curiosity coupled with the presumption that Tom Hanks wouldn’t be in it if it were THAT awful. Withnail is a tragi-comedy really: it's very British in its sense of gloom as humour. I've also always thought it's more like a play than a film, with the way it uses words and dialogue. The way Bruce Robinson put those words together, though, is utter genius. It's one of those films that every time I watch it - and I've seen it many times - I notice something new and different. Withnail is an odd bird I love it and think is up there with Brian & Holy Grail but my wife and many friends hate it. I'm sure someone else has said it's one of those comedies that needs to be seen a couple of times to get into the rhythm of the less obvious gags, which it is stuffed with. Certainly for anyone of my age (60) who was an undergraduate in the 1980s then scenes like the 'Kitchen' are funny because we lived in little more than slum flats and bedsits when at university. The other beauty of Withnail is how quotable it is, god knows how many times I've heard a student demanding 'the finest of wines' or back in the day friends misquoting Danny the dealer when rolling a 'Sunderland' rather than a Camberwell Carrot!' I also have to say I'm surprised Whiskey Galore (the original though the remake is pretty good) did not make the list because I'd put it the top five.

Kind Hearts and Coronets has a strong case for being one of the wittiest and sharply written English language movies ever. A young Alec Guinness delivers arguably a career best performance (or performances) - his the tedious church tour given by the "boring clergyman" member of the A'Ascoyne family provided a murder motive all on its own. Definitely check it out. Be prepared for a movie that it overdue for a restoration though, and an ending that sadly had to fit with the views of the censors at that time.

I love Withnail and I, it's a brilliant movie. BTw 'Withnail' is pronounced With- nil

Kind Hearts should be number 1. It's an amazing film with a brilliant script and sublime acting. Agree with you about Withnail. And I'd pick Life of Brian over Holy Grail. Two other Ealing films that have held up quite well are Whisky Galore and Passport to Pimlico. (And the Man in the White Suit has the best sound effect ever - and also stars Alec Guinness.)

Kinds Hearts and Coronets, must be watched, (pronto by you.) Exquisitely subtle.

I would say The Full Monty is way ahead of the others on this list.

I must have watched 'Withnail' and 'The Holy Grail' 20 or 30 times...If it's good I can rewatch it many times as i can 'Lebowski'...I read that Tom Hanks played the main character in the Coens 'The Lady Killers' without ever watching the original...That blew me away...Made me frown!

I'm at 13:41 and what you said is so relatable! I often times find myself watching a series or anime or cartoon and I get to a certain episode that made me feel intense emotions (more often than not I get angry at some character's treatment - eg. Wei Wuxian from The Untamed - or I am sobbing or crying about happenings in the show - eg. Clannad), and I get so invested in these emotions that I have to stop watching the show for a while and start watching a new one but then I have to stop *that* show and get back to the other one. So my list of shows I need to finish is long 😅 Funnily enough...never happens with movies or books. Even if I'm not enjoying it or resonating with it, I keep watching or reading to get a full understanding of the story it's trying to portray and I can confidently say I didn't like it and why. This happens a lot more with books: it could be the story is too bland or too predictable for me or I simply don't like the writing style of the author. For example, Nicolas Sparks and José Rodrigues dos Santos...I don't really like their writing style and the way they describe things...but I own and have read all of their books. Actually, 2 Nicholas Sparks' books are a few of the cases where I much prefer the movie adaptation than the actual book itself precisely because of the writing style because the story is fine. Sry for the tangent and rant there 😅 I just get really worked up about this kind of topic 😆

Recommend tv programme The Thick of It which In the Loop is based on. Also Peter Sellars learnt a lot of his craft as a character actor from working with Alec Guinness in The Lady Killers. Withnail is my favourite film ever but I can see why an American wouldn’t get it.
