There are colds and then there are heavy colds. Anyone but the really vulnerable can coast through a cold but a heavy cold can be another matter. I have just suffered from a cold for the first time in decades. Feeling generally drained with only a slightly raised temperature, a combination of a blocked and constantly running nose, a productive cough, shortness of breath and difficulty in breathing when lying down. No, not influenza, hence no fever. Btw, pseudoephedrine (sudafed) does work as a decongestant, at least it did for me. Guaifenesin also works as an expectorant and that helped to shift the crap out of my lungs and throat too. Having had this cold with its symptoms and effects has taught me a lesson. I realise that in the past I have been lucky and I will never again dismiss a cold as something to be shrugged off as nothing.

IN UK there are about 200 deaths each year from paracetamol poisoning. In USA there are about 100,000 incidents each year (didn't say how many died - but unless treatment is given quickly - possible liver transplant or death is the expected outcome) Paracetomal is sold in limited quantities in uk and in blister packs to make it harder to accidentally or intentionally overdose on it. Pouring tablets from a pot is quicker and easier than having to get each individual one out of a blister packet. Also, looking at a part-used blister pack - it is easier to estimate how many you have already had. Paracetomal causes a toxin to form in the liver. When taking the maximum dose as advised on the packet in UK, the liver copes with it and clears ghe toxin out. Taking more than the prescribed amount causes the toxin to build up in the liver and can increase to a level that causes liver failure within a few days. People don't recognise the symptons - if left or they don't get to the hospital for treatment in time, it can't be cured. Limiting the number of tablets in a packet and putting them in blister packets has contributed to the reduction in annual deaths due to overdose in UK by nearly one third. People also sometimes don't realise that they are doubling up on the dose because paracetomal is also an ingredient in so.e other over the counter medicine that they are taking at the same time. In UK medicine packets also come with an instructionand information leaflet inside the packet providing info., warnings and advice about possible side effects and the different level of concer and action to take applying to each one.
@ChickenOfAwesome4 күн бұрын
It's also about interrupting ideation - literally ANYTHING that slows you down, whether it's having to go to multiple shops to get enough or pop individual pills out of blister packs (which we pack almost all medication in in the UK) has been shown to be extremely effective in at least temporarily halting an attempt to harm yourself.

I’m an Aussie in my seventies. When I was a child, at the first sign of a cold, Mum would boil some water, add the juice of a lemon, a crushed Aspirin and some honey to sweeten the whole thing, then I would sit up in bed and sip it until it was all gone. She would repeat it as needed. Sometimes she used two spoons to crush an Aspirin or two and blend the powder with some honey until it formed a paste, which I would then eat. My colds were gone in two days. By the time I was an adult, there was a product called Lemsip, which was basically the same thing but seemed less effective. The best decongestant is Echinacea which tablets you can buy from your pharmacy or health food store. It requires some caution when taking them, because too many for too long can dehydrate you. So check the documentation from the packet.

lemsip tends to work better than the shop brands; but not always, and it doesn't help get rid of a cold it's just to relieve the symptoms.

Although there's no cure for a common cold I must admit I love an original Lemsip. It's more of a comfort drink than anything else.

Lemsip with a splash of whiskey. That was our family go to for cold & flu symptoms. Very soothing.

When we have a cold here in the UK, we often have Heinze Tomato soup in a mug.

Cowpull = Calpol 😂😂😂😂 Two paracetamol and hot lemon with honey, always sorts my colds out. 500mg paracetamol in ANY country is exactly the SAME dosage/strength. We usually say "off their head" when describing someone who is acting a bit mental.

You should try the herb Echinacea if you have a stuffed up nose, sore throat or blocked sinus from hayfever or cold.

In UK, my go to for a decongestant is Sudafed. Apart from that, paracetamol, a hot toddy and/or hot spiced chicken soup and then bed with a hot water bottle and sweat it out. Never had a cold for more than three days. Flu is a b!tch though, knocks you down for a week whatever you try. Manflu is nearly fatal in every case, and lasts at least two weeks, requires bed rest throughout and warm milk and paracetamol administered by a caring partner/parent/friend every four hours.

I normally use on a night when im away on night the Aldi/Lidl version of lemsip and i find it sooooo calming and soothing, but im english, a warm drink before sleep is always nice. or a hot toddie

We (UK) use the words tablets, caplets, and capsules. The word used depends on the shape or if it is contained in a swallowable container. Tablet is roundish Caplet is in the shape of a capsule Capsule is powdered medication inside a plastic like container in the shape, but not size, of a 'tall minion'.

I was always fascinated by the traditional mustard steam treatment, After seeing it in an episode of Steptoe & Son. Where you sprinkled mustard powder into a large pudding bowl of steaming water. Then inhaled the steam by leaning over the bowl with a towel over your head. As a kid, I had to make do with a smear of Vicks under my nose. My grandparents were the last people I knew who bought Colemans mustard powder.

Lemsip definitely helps, even if it’s a placebo
@speleokeir6 күн бұрын
Other than the placebo effect Lemsip doesn't do a thing except the paracetamol and you can buy that far more cheaply on it's own. If you want something to sooth your throat try lemon & ginger tea or even fresh ginger chopped up with hot water. Add a dollop of honey. Cheaper, nicer and more effective IMO. However the best thing to do when you first feel the twinges of a cold (for me it's at the back of my mouth) is eat lots of green veg: Onions, leeks, spring onions, brocolli and especially garlic. These all increase your white blood cell count which in turn boosts your immune system to fight off viruses. I find if I eat loads of these as soon as I fee a bit ill it really helps me fight off the virus and it often doesn't develop further. If you leave it until the next day though it gives the virus time to develop so is a lot less effective, although it may stop it getting as bad and help you recover more quickly.

Agree, most people think these meds CURE illness, they provide SYMPTOMATIC RELIEF. I always keep Lemsip on hand, as well as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen. Aside from that, I swear by a hot curry and Ricola Original Herb sweets. 7-14 days max I find any cold clears up, tbh.

The only time i have ever had flu was way back in the 80s, i get messages from the drs asking me to come for my flu jab but i take no notice. Last time i had a cold was about 20 years ago. my place is kept cool and when i worked in a factory i walked there and back in all weathers. over doses of paracetamol make the liver start dying and do not kill you

As a Brit l have Heinz cream of chicken soup with some buttered bread to dip, when l was younger my mum had me steaming my face with hot water and a dollop of Vicks vapour rub (which she smothered all over my chest and back). So l would be sitting there with my head over the bowl and a towel covering my head trying to breath, but it did seem to help.

I do wonder if she's ever bought paracetamol / acetaminophen in the UK or just bought them in the US blindly, as it's around 35p for a pack of 16. Looking at Amazon US, 500 acetaminophen tablets works out at about 4 cents each, which is significantly more than in the UK. Plus even if she took 8 pills a day, that bottle of 500 would last her well over a year, by which point they probably would have expired.

Brit chiming in on food (most of the rest was fine); Toast (dry, no butter) if you're suffering like acid reflux, or sore throat, or generally suffering with bad tummy (it absorbs acid and doesn't make it worse!) Soup (preferably a brothy soup) if you're struggling to keep food down. We generally stay away from anything 'rich' if there's anything going on down below too.

Hi JJ, in all my time in the UK, the main remedy for a cold or flu is bed-rest. Go to bed, drink lots of fluids, Take pain killers. if your nose is stuffy, I have a packet of lockets. (sweets to suck) Lemsip is good because it has pain-killers and is a hot drink so does 2 of the things you need to be doing.

Definitely best thing for cold/flu is a hot toddy & 2 paracetamols wrap up warm and sweat it out. Homemade chicken soup my nana use to make was always good when we were poorly. (Calpol is what this lady in the video was referring to for children liquid paracetamol).

When we were young, my ex would buy a bottle of cheap cherry brandy as his cold cure. Usually worked. Other worthwhile mentions include Lucozade, a hot curry, and fresh ginger tea. My 102 year old Granny swears by tea (weak black) with whiskey and lemon.
