I remember when I was 14, I was in a music store playing "My Sharona". The guy came over and, very politely said, "that's not the best way to play that", and showed me the "right" way. I then started playing "Back in Black", and he was like "umm...OK, let's work on this one". I probably should have been thrown out, but everybody has to start somewhere.

I grew up with these riffs and loved them. Then I learned how they worked and changed them up in my songs. The idea behind the SOTW riff has been used so many times in so many ways (even by Blackmore himself), and it's still fun to make new riffs with it. Great vid.

I took my granddaughter to Guitar Center recently. She said "don't embarrass me grandpa " . So I picked up a guitar and played "We'll be back" by Megadeth. She smiled. I smiled. The staff smiled. I bought her a Stymon El Capistan and a Gibson Les Paul. Her mother and my wife had a Sh!t fit! We ALL smiled. Yeah...a good time was had by all...but two! And NO "Stairway to Heaven" was ever played and no instruments were harmed in this encounter. Thank you!

Haha this was fun 😆. If everyone in the record shop played these classic riffs as well as you, no one would mind, but of course they don't. That's why they drive guitar shop assistants nuts. The riffs themselves are inspired works of genius and you never grow tired of them. For me the most iconic and greatest of all is SMOKE ON THE WATER - just 12 notes, yet they stir your soul. It is probably therefore (to answer your question) the most forbidden riff.

I promise I don't play them in my guitar shop! Not because they're "forbidden" though, just because I'd feel mortified if I played something familiar and messed it up in front of staff and customers. For this reason I play something I know they'll never have heard of. I like the staff's confusion as try to work out what I'm playing! 🤣🤣 [p.s. Though I would only say a few of them may actually be forbidden, but that's me...I'm not the poor guitar store personnel that are forced to listen to the same old songs all of the time. Stairway might be THE forbidden riff, but I think Sweet Child 'o Mine is probably the one most often butchered in stores. I know I did it back when I was starting haha. I think they'd be very happy to hear playing as good as this though. That was awesome! \m/ OMG, that Purple Haze tone was incredible! And flawless TTFATF! Some absolutely gorgeous new guitars too. Amazing video, and once again, the intro was comedy gold haha.

The whole "Forbidden Riff" thing is because they are simple riffs that any beginner or average guitar play could play. So they always play them while testing out guitars at stores and anoy the staff. Master of puppets, Reign in Blood, Through the Fire and the Flames? Thos are way to complex to be considered "Forbidden Riffs". I agree with the alot of the list though.

That is nonsense, the forbidden riff meme came from a Wayne's World joke and if any music store actually kicks someone out for playing a specific riff it only proves that they are artists that can't comprehend humor and don't know anything about sales, customer service, the law, or human decency and deserve to be fired or put out of business. Personally I would set up some massive speakers outside and play the same 10 seconds of stairway to heaven over and over again until I got tired of it, then get all my friends to do the same thing, in shifts until they needed me to be their mascot.

The employees at every guitar store went from liking stairway to heaven to absolutely hating it when they had the potential of getting sued for having it played at their shops due to that stupid lawsuit whereas some person claimed that they wrote stairway to heaven even though they definitely didn't write stairway to heaven. But hey until the lawsuit is settled which it never will be no one is allowed to play that song.

Can everybody agree, know these riffs are forrbiden in stores? But I swear to God. When I get home I rock out to the majority of these! Especially smells like Teen Spirit, Stairway to Heaven and Smoke on the Water. On my Ibanez RGA 32 MOL gutiar! Sometimes I wish they weren't banned? Cause it's makes it a bummer when you want to test the full extent to what your gutiar can do. When your testing and looking into buying a new instrument. I mean there are other rifts and songs you could choose from I guess. But these forbidden riffs are such great songs and it's a bloody shame when you can't share them with others.

Awwww man! How is Walk on here!!? I will never ever ever forget going to a big ass music store in Oxford with my mate who SHREDS Guitar, I stopped playing when nerve damage hit me hard, I started playing drums before my disabilities really wrecked any chance of being able to play. My buddy picked up a Dixie Rebel Dean, started messing around with a few chords & i remember they had a drum set that was DECKED OUT, sneaked around the poor little barrier dealy & we started playing Walk as a joke basically, OWNER of the store came over to tell us we sounded shit without a bass & then picked one up!! Memory made that day, dude was super chill & cut my buddy an amazing deal on the Dean! I however could not afford the Drum Set 😄

My guitar teacher said years ago, that if someone came into his shop and started playing either Stairway To Heaven or Smoke On the Water, the workers would make them either finish the song or leave😀

Man, you have so much musical power. I got none. I have such a deficit that if I get too close to the stage at a live show, they lose 10% of their ability. So I am very impressed with some one who can get great sound from a guitar like you can.

I just started playing in 2018 & came of age in the days of glam rock. I was really proud of myself when I finally learned to play Sweet Child but while I'm too old to care that much what people think, I will not play it out of respect to guitar store employees. Otherwise, if I'm about to spend a couple of thousand bucks, I'll play what I g*damned well please. My go-to's are usually my favorites - Drop Dead Legs, Little Wing, Red House (the best intro to any song in history) & guilty pleasures, Lay It Down by Ratt, and It's Not Love by Dokken.

Every music store I've been in have had a sound proofed room for testing out instruments/equipment so the employees don't have to listen to it.
