So 3rd, 2nd and 1st kyu exam are basically the same on that school. What a shame.

All the examinations have at least one different element between them. The Japan Karate Association doesn't have very complicated examinations, but they are very strict regarding the quality of yhe technique. For example, Oi Zuki (junzuki) is present on every examination from 9th Kyu from 2nd Dan. That doesn't mean that the examinations are easy. Instead they are trying to see how you evolved practising Kihon (basics). Just by adding techniques, doesn't mean that the exam is difficult . . . JKA is the oldest international shotokan karate organization.

These exams have always been very much the same. We generally look for better skills rather than many new techniques. It works for us.

Not a shame. Many do it this way and it works

@@moehoward8691 Yes, I retract my opinion and apologize for that. The best way to practice and learn any martial art is focusing on the basics

Don't forget the kata. For 3rd kyu you need to perform Heian Godan, for 2nd Tekki shodan and for 1st one of Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai, Jion or Empi. And on top of that, kumite part has always some extra move allowed for every step in 3rd, 2nd and 1st. Those "kihon moving basics" shown in the video are just the baseline for the examination.
