Kanku dai - Shotokan Karate do Kata Teach By Ogura Shihan, Demo By Naka Shihan

Kūshankū (クーシャンク, 公相君) also called Kūsankū (クーサンクー) or Kankū-dai (観空大), is an open hand karate kata that is studied by many practitioners of Okinawan Karate, specifically styles related to Shuri-te. In many styles, such as Shotokan, there are two versions of the kata: Kūsankū-shō and Kūsankū-dai. The name Kūsankū or Kōsōkun (公相君) is used in Okinawan systems of karate, and refers to Kūsankū, a Chinese diplomat from Fukien who traveled to Okinawa in the 1700s. In Japanese systems of karate, the kata has been known as Kankū (translated as gazing heavenward, viewing the sky, or contemplating the sky) ever since it was renamed in the 1930s by Funakoshi Gichin.This kata is also practiced in Tang Soo Do as Kong Sang Koon (공상군) in Korean according to the hangul rendering of the hanja 公相君. Most schools of Tang Soo Do only practice the "Dai" version a handful do practice both the latter and "Sho" versions.

The starting position of a kata should always come from a natural posture, in shinzentai! Why are all the gentlemen always standing there with their legs apart? Is that their natural posture?

The sequence is in the master text 42-43 your hands are down touching the floor, left leg stretched out right leg under chest. Then you have a low block ( knife hand) in two different text books the one is a squat ( rt leg ) then the low block, then you stand while the other text states, your standing then the low knife hand block. We, at my JKA do the ladder. Stand then the low knife hand block. If you watch the video Sensei states stay down in the squat position, then move to your low knife hand block. So which is it?
