@jkgardiner John, I think that regardless of what martial art you decide to do, you must enjoy doing it. I still after 10 years of training enjoy every lesson.

I think you didnt care enough about the philosophical and historical aspect of karate that we can learn in books( wisdom, avoid conflict, history of Gichin Funakoshi…)

Accept that learning takes time. Yes, keep an eye on that coveted black belt, but pay attention to all those steps needed along the way. Also, you will change along the way; mentally, physically, purpose etc. Not always positively either, but don't give up. Great tips as always John. If you don't mind me being critical, I'm really glad you got yourself a microphone, just watch all the emphatic gesturing as its clearly quite sensitive. I felt every fist to palm slap and gi shuffle lol.

Push yourself but don’t hurt yourself. Many people quit karate (or sports in general) when they get injured. Keep in mind that as you get older, it takes longer to recover from injuries. Warm up, stretch, and keep yourself hydrated. Most importantly, listen to your body.

Thanks for sharing Sensei Gardiner. I try to ask my instructor questions often or provide advice which makes him think about certain techniques or methods. Mind you we have that relationship as I’ve known him since 1992. It makes me better and in turn I pass it on to my teammates. Osu 👍🏾

Be careful using geri in referrence to a kick. In Japanese in combination with another kanji in front of it (Mae, Yoko, Ushro) the word is pronounced geri. However, on its own, for just saying "kick" it is keri.....geri said like this refers to something different, namely diarrhea... For the rest, nice video. One more advice, Have fun!!!!

An other obvious tip, listen. Even if the explanation is not for you, something in the explanation, the way it is made, the emphasis on things can help improve your technique! Thanks again for the video John... a non karate practitioner used of listening to your very clear explanations, advise nr 2.

Great video. And great suggestions. Practicing 30 min at home 2x per week is good for me away from the dojo. Thanks Sensei

Important advice sensei, the karate style I was introduced to 7 years ago emphasis it's training on flexibility, speed and strength,it also encourages aggressive sparring sessions which is quite challenging especially when sparring with 3 to 6 people attacking you in a 3 minutes sparring session,can you make any video on multiple opponent sparring and what techniques or tips you can share.Respect🙏🙏

I’m confused with karate i want to learn shotokan but do I have to choose something in shotokan to learn or do you learn all of it? Idk if this made sense 😅
@RoyAlexander

Nice one. The "asking questions" point is closely related to the point about finding a dojo that suits you. Especially if the Sensei of a particular dojo doesn't like people asking questions!

@jkgardiner

You can do cardio when bulking but you’ll need to increase kcal to make sure you are in a surplus. It’s simply get more kcal in than you burn. More activity? More calories.
