Hi, Sensei MA Dione (SKIAF) told me in 1989 that Uke doesn't mean to block something. He said it's more receiving or reacting on an attack. He said that this wide movements in Kihon are only for Training. Add on he told me to interpretate the Uke more as a short range attack. Greetings from Germany

Most of the questions you ask are very specific to yourself. I would suggest hiring a coach to give you more bespoke advice as what works for one person may not work for you and vice versa. Also with the amount of specific advice you ask for, should not be expected for free.

@@sujeetkumarsinghmath I’ve explained a few times in the comments. The resistance from the weight is acting downwards, the band is coming from behind, against the punch.

What’s up JG you absolute legend. I got told to punch with weights when training in Japan, but a special kind called sachi or something similar. The weight was like a handle with a 3kg block above the knuckle. We did lines of basic tsuki, standing tsuki and other variations. From what I understood the weight was partly for endurance, and partly to help fully extend the tsuki as soon as it’s been thrown from the hip. It was also to help stretch the tendons of the arm on impact which sounds gnarly. A lot of this can be achieved way more safely with a resistance band 🫡 Love the channel, keep it up!

That's why "original" karate, in Okinawa before introduction to Japan, didn't have high kicks (never above waist). Being a close range combat system for self defence. They appeared only in sports karate, mainly from French savate.

What is the real reason for not recommending to.use dumbell in punching horizontal ?
@jkgardinerКүн бұрын
The resistance is coming from the wrong direction with the weight. Gravity is pulling the punch down rather than back as the band does.

I still believe dumbell punches are good for early beginners. They tend to aim below head level (this forces them to put effort in which height they aim at) and often need some shoulder conditionning.

Train your kicks normally in the dojo and make sure you’re doing squats, leg extensions, and leg curls with high weight (relative to what you can do) and low reps (3-5 reps per set) to your weight lifting routine outside the dojo. You’ll notice your kicks start getting faster and more explosive after 6-8 weeks or so.
