I think the airport was never renamed and was opened as JKIA. The old Embakasi airport was left intact for use by the Air Force.

Expanded is perhaps more appropriate. Old section still in use by military, yes but commercial became Nairobi Int. Airport, then JKIA. Embakasi Airfield effectively birthed JKIA

I suggest you do some more research if you have to give the history of the airport because I believe the military was using the Eastliegh Airbase and Embakasi was initially worked on using MauMau detainees in the fifties.
