My zpacks arc blast should be arriving tomorrow! My brother and I did the Lone Star Hiking Trail in 4 and a half days. No big inclines because…Texas. Just 20+ mile days. Our biggest day was 26.6 miles (the day other peoples poop stories got me through as we listen to the podcast) and we were able to stash everything we didn’t need for the day at a trail head in the bushes inside our compactor bags and slack pack the 26.6 to the end of the trail where we had parked, and picked up our gear on our way home. Feeling the massive difference in how you are able to hike with less weight, even after 4 days doing 20 mile days was enough to get me looking into more ul gear. I love my Osprey Aura. That 65l bag can carry some serious gear for small trips where I want a lot of creature comforts. But at 19.9 oz, I’m excited to try this new pack! My base weight with my osprey for for our trip was 21.3. On long trips, I can use this new bag and just use my hammock as my camp chair (tear rolls down cheek) and that together shaved off 5 lbs on my base weight!

Hey John, Great video as usual. I opted for the OV Nova Pro vest instead of the jacket as I also have their Vario and Ventus to layer with. Love the Fortius but why the shift from the hammock? Is it due to using the Waymark that is smaller? I am looking longingly at the Waymark EVLV 38 but not sure if it has enough room for what I have or like to carry anyway.

I love that Outdoor Vitals puts pitzips in thier jackets. When they came out a few years ago with their synthetic puffy hoody that I would say is a lot like the Patagonia Nanopuff hoody, while I was watching their ad I saw the pitzips and I was like, "Shut up and take my money!" because this is something that has been missing on insulated jackets from the beginning. Just because you want to be warm doesn't mean you don't at times need to vent some heat and moisture, and it's so much more comfortable to do that from the pits than to unzip the front of the jacket.

My wife and I both use the BA quad core deluxe. Basically, the same sleeping pad with a different fabric on top. Same r-value, same comfort. Probably the most comfortable pads available. We both use the wide versions also. For tents, I have the x-mid 2p and absolutely love it! My wife has the lanshan 2 pro but has been looking at either the fortius or the x-mid. I told her I would buy either because they are both great tents. She does still love her lanshan but the fortius is like the lanshan on steroids! Better guy out design and more staking options. Although, the lanshan 2 pro is extremely impressive at its price point. Even if she decides on another tent, we will keep that lanshan because even I like it and will still get use of it. The jacket is hands down the best out there! My wife has one and I'm getting one. The flextail pump is definitely an underrated product. We've used other similar pumps that are great but that little port on the side is absolutely annoying. Quilts, if it is 48 or warmer, I'm pretty much not going to have anything other than a small fleece blanket that doesn't even cover me completely lol. I sleep very warm. 48 down to 30 I use a down bag from nearzero. I use it unzipped as a blanket. From 30 down to 10F, I use the OV stormloft 15 degree quilt with just base layers. I'm definitely going to look into those shirts though. Might be perfect for me! Oh, and love the hat. Where did you get that one? I got to get me one. Got to keep my inner nerd happy! I live in California and in the summer it gets just as hot. I just ordered a 10° quilt because I was hoping to be able to use it year round. Did I make a mistake buying the 10° quilt instead of the 25° quilt? Would you recommend that I call them and get my order changed before it ships? I ordered the ZenBivy Light bed and it was crazy expensive. I really can’t afford a quilt this expensive, but I couldn’t sleep in the mummy bag I had. I’m very nervous about buyers remorse. Is a 10° quilt going to be too warm to use the majority of the year?

@@MichaelsPwner Just want to state I’m a side sleeper. To me, the quasar is the lightweight pad that feels closest to a real mattress. The top material feels like cloth rather than the plasticky feel. It also has a gentle downward gradient from head to toe which relieves the pressure around my hip. I don’t have any muscle aches after sleeping on the quasar. Comfort 10/10. Rapide comfort 8/10. Tensor maybe 6/10.

Dude I just bought the Fortius 2P and it is a tank for a tent that is light as it is. It gets so many bad reviews for being a sit/poly material, but honestly I could have bought the Durston for the price I paid for the Fortius but I just know how much Outdoor Vitals put into research and development of this tent with goal of developing a tent that can withstand the elements. I’ve not used the lanshan, but I can see the comparison.

A lot of people want to give it that comparison because it is made of a 15D sil/poly, but there are multiple features that make it better than the LanShan. The ventilation on the Fortius is amazing and it really is a solid tent. Does it stretch when it gets wet? Yes, but the stitching and all the places to guy it out make up for that. Not to mention the weight. I confidently paid the extra $100+ for this tent. I will agree that the Durston X Mid 2 could be a better tent at about the same price point but that's about the only other trekking pole tent I would consider at that price point. I think those two tents are the best your gonna get unless they are made of Dyneema. But I'm not knocking the LanShan either. For the price of the LanShan and the weight it is an awesome tent as well. It's just not going to breathe and reduce condensation or withstand the elements like the Fortius and the X Mid.

Don't use the mittens with the magnet in them if you are using a magnetic compass as it will change the magnetic polarity and screw up your compass

Unfortunately, every fabric has to be sewn or taped. Over time, those eventually let in water, but you are right. Dyneema fabric on it's own is waterproof.

Great gloves but not near a compass. Durston tents if have magnetic clips. Not a tent for a compass user!

Just use a thin liner in the summer man. Using a 50 degree quilt is kinda hot when it’s 80 degrees out haha.

@@john_kelley hahaha yes yes. I typically always take a liner in summer months as well as a lightweight quilt just in case. Those little liners are brilliant for summer sleeping
