I’ll be honest, going down with serious injuries have made me a better rider. I’ve had 2 major accidents and they change your mindset. My last accident, when I picked up my bike off the freeway I was still in 5th gear. Now if I see anything weird ahead I’m rolling off throttle and kicking down a gear. I’m taking the total control course on June 4th. I’m hoping to acquire more skills that will help keep me safe. Over 75% of motorcycle crashes are the riders fault. Not sure where I found that statistic but you’re welcome to look it up. Emergency braking and cornering too fast seem to be the most common.
@dadwithabike2 жыл бұрын
Yup, lots of riders lose it in corners because they just are not prepare. Some basics need to be part of you prep to corner. Down shifting, braking before the corner, maintaining speed and line in the corner, accelerate out when you see the exit. That total control course is a good one !

All great tips! Lane filtering is allowed in my state, but I'd prefer not to ride when/where it's a significant advantage. There's always that Karen/Darren that wants to regulate others. IE: "If I can't advance in this situation, no one can!" Then again, I prefer back roads or no roads. Dual sport or dirt bikes for me.
@dadwithabike2 жыл бұрын
Agree with you 100%. My next ride will be a straight up ADV bike so I can take my adventures off-road

Lane filtering is for douche bags.

I also anticipate what the drivers around me may do. Many drivers start changing lanes before using their turn signals. Which is illegal. All drivers must first use their turn signals before changing lanes. So anticipating what drivers may do, you can then look for potential escape routes. You are absolutely correct you have to be vigilant.
@dadwithabike2 жыл бұрын
Great point about anticipating! Thanks

"I am a defensive driver because I drive much faster than the speed of traffic." Dies while driving too fast. Don't listen to these people for your motorcycle safety tips, folks. Find someone who actually knows what they're talking about like DDTFM.

Quite honestly, and I say this with mixed feelings for the man’s family after his death, but a lot of what he’s saying here is just absolutely wrong. Keep space, slow dow, and anticipate other bad drivers. Don’t ride aggressively. Maintain your equipment.

Watching aviation accident reports is also a great way of learning to detect small things which alone are no big deal, but if they add up, they will quickly cascade into a disaster near you. Be observant of anything around you, have good rear view mirror and practice shoulder check (check twice, merge once). Install additional lights slighly angled outward (or better install RIGID DSS) with strobe-capable fuse box, have LED strobe stop lights. Make sure your bike is powerful enough to extricate you quickly from wannabe clusterfucks should need arise. Dress for the crash and to be visible, but don't count on it. Be paranoid ("Only the paranoid survives", Andy Grove)
