Great review. I was looking at the JL subs. Amazing performance for such a small size. If you need a compact subwoofer, the price to value ratio is there. But my thought is if you have room to go with a bigger subwoofer, you can find something that digs lower for the same price.

We're a JL Audio dealer here in Toronto, Canada so thumbs up! I can definitely vouch for the inhouse engineering skill and expertise - we've worked with them for unusual installations for their large inwall subs and they completely understand their products and are very generous with their time. Regarding your results, there isn't much real bass content below 20Hz in most mainstream material, so performance in that low-20Hz range is much more important that under 20Hz unless you're listening to some very specific pieces. I hope people understand how significant that 5db output difference is - every 3db is a doubling of loudness, so that 5db will definitely be noticeable. Last, your measurements were really comprehensive, much more solid data than we usually see in a review but what did you think of the sound? Measurements are important but in the end, what it sounds like is most important. The little D108 works well for both theatre and music. Just found your channel today - it's great! Thanks.

I use exactly this type of setup that you discuss about 3 minutes in - I have tiny 10 cm tall Cambridge Audio MInx Min22 speakers, and they only go down to 120. So I back them up with two tiny Cambridge subs to provide the bottom end. And it works very well. Not really home theater level bass but passable (it's my gaming rig setup, not main setup).

again another great review Erin. Well done. Hope you can give me insight cause I am quite contemplating this vs the KEF KC62 and REL T7x. looking for a smaller sub-package that will easily blend into my 2 channel setup. Using a set of Magnepan LRS+ as my main speakers. I am leaning towards the KEF KC62 since they have an inboard Input Output high pass filter bass management. Also, somebody is selling a JL audio dominion @ Audiogon for 500 USD. I believe it is a steal for the price, but it doesn't have as much technology as the KEF for versatility in integrating 2 channels. Hope your experience and opinion on this matter help me in choosing the right sub for my 2 channels. My room is quite small to medium size. TY so much for your YT channel. more power and Godbless.

Agree that using the SVS app to control my pair of SB1000 Pros makes it fun and easy to use and I can adjust settings if I want to between different songs. Thanks for the review, Erin. Based on the performance and the design/engineering involved with JLA D108, I’d say it’s competitively priced. I think it may be difficult for people to appreciate that bc of the cost of admission. Personally, I’d rather have a really good pair of floor standers (preferably 3-way) for stereo, and I would certainly be going over budget on a HT application using these subs. For anyone with the budget and the desire and ability to incorporate these into a setup system, I wouldn’t anticipate dissatisfaction.

That’s kinda tough … the KC62 is smaller, I believe. The JL has more output capability in the 40-60Hz region by about 5dB. If midbass output is priority then JL. If size is priority then KEF. I have the jl E112, kef kc62 and I've tried in my room the svs sb2000 and pb2000. The jl e112 has a lot of low end extension and limitless output whilst the enclosure is completely silent. The svs sb2000 kicks and draws attention to itself and cannot come close to the e112 in both output and low end extension. The pb2000 is absolutely terrible for music and not bad for movies but it has a monotone single note type bass. The JL e112 wipes the floor with the pb2000 even with movies as not only can the e112 dig deep it can play each frequency precisely and each note sounds distinct. I do think the e112 is over kill for my 5 x 5 meter room. I could have and should have bought the e110. I'm using it with small kef ls50 meta bookshelf speakers and it's probably not the best match for strictly music as the ls50 meta is a little weak in the 80, 90hz region and the jl e112 isn't strongest In the upper bass. Since you are using floor standers I don't think there is a better sub out there at any price than the e112. It will fill in the bottom end below 80hz beautifully with extension similar to a massive ported sub but with the finesse and sound quality of a sealed sub. I bought mine when they first came out for half the price it is now. It's ridiculously expensive now.

Another aspect of all of these types of active subwoofers (or any subwoofer for that matter), that Erin can't really test is the reliability and longevity of the driver itself, the cabinet construction, and the electronics/amplifier. I know from experience that JL Audio goes to great lengths to use high-quality parts and construction to deliver a reliable product with good Q.C. And they are one of the best in terms of providing useful information for the setup and adjustment in their Owner's Manuals. Their tech and warranty support is also top notch and they are based in the U.S.A. So while their prices might be high, you will most likely end up with a product that performs at a high level which will also remain reliable for a long period and will not need replacement due to failure due to manufacture defects, cheap construction, or electronics, etc.

Good review and I agree that the JL Audio subwoofers are the real deal. I had a D-110 which is the 10 inch version of this subwoofer and it was excellent. Ultimately though I had to sell it when I bought main speakers that were closer to full range than the monitors they replaced. I simply could not achieve an integration that sounded as consistently good as I would have liked. Issues like (I believe) midrange coloration because of in room response of the subwoofer above the crossover, midrange coloration from cabinet resonance and occasionally "hard" sounding bass (I believe) because of being out of phase with the signal of the main speakers. Of course output is important but so is the subwoofer's integration capability which can make or break the success of the application. For your reviews to be more complete they should include some aspects of the performance of the crossovers and in-room response measurements of the crossover filters- are they really providing 24db reduction per octave at the given frequency for example. Other examples would be to actually relate your experiences with integration into your system with various speakers. Without reviewing integration capabilities we have no indication or prediction of how they might work in our systems. Peace and keep up the good work.
@bbfoto7248
@bbfoto7248 9 ай бұрын
Having Erin test the "integration capabilities" of the subwoofer is somewhat pointless, because everyone's specific ROOM and the placement of BOTH the mains AND the subwoofer in that unique room will be the primary influence on the quality of the integration that can or will be achieved. There's simply no way Erin can provide you with a meaningful in-room apples-to-apples comparison that would translate to any particular subwoofer being used in YOUR ROOM, and with your specific setup. There are just way too many variables. That's the one good thing about having the objective data for each subwoofer which can all be compared on an apples-to-apples basis. If you know what SPL level your mains are capable of while remaining linear, or the maximum SPL that you want to achieve for normal listening, as well as the the low frequency extension limit of your mains, you can choose an appropriate matching subwoofer based on the objective data. How easily or how well you're able to integrate the subwoofer comes down to the properties of your room, the avaliable placement options of your mains and the subwoofer, and your listening position. The JL might integrate perfectly in Erin's room and setup, but not achieve even close to the same results in yours. With decently performing subwoofers, the sound quality and impact you achieve is pretty much determined completely by the room and placement and how you specifically adjust the settings in your unique system. Erin can't replicate that. It might also depend on if you are primarily using the subwoofer for a Home Theater application, or just for Music, or for both. IME, 95% of people who have a subwoofer in their system primarily for music listening have the output of the subwoofer set way too high! This will make it quite difficult to "musically" integrate and will result in the issues you stated...midrange coloration, resonances, muddy midbass, or "hard"/peaky bass. Also IME, most people are not accustomed to hearing truly musical and linear, non-distorted bass. If It's done right, you will not "hear" the subwoofer itself at all. For music, you shouldn't hear or "notice" that there is a subwoofer in the system other than having smooth but tight extended low frequency response. Most people want to "hear the sub", so they adjust it far too high until it is overpowering the music and is no longer providing a smooth, integrated, and balanced/natural/musical spectral balance.

@@wadimek116 JL uses industry leading technology called DMA Dynamic Motor Analysis and that coupled with the engineering that goes into their incredible drivers and internal components and build quality. Achieving all this performance without DSP. "All signal processing is performed in the analog domain, ensuring very low latency in critical applications." This helps keep the group delay very low and when comparing to other subs it's easy to notice the difference in speed and accuracy also the extremely low group delay under 20 Hz is easily noticeable when listening and translates to extreme control at the limit whereas other subs with higher group delay you can easily hear them fall apart at the same levels and turn into a muddy mess.

Pretty good results. I have not heard any JL Home subs, but had several of their car audio subs in the past. One that I particularly liked was a cylindrical tube, cut in half with an 8" driver and a single port. Very compact form factor, very good extension and was designed on the SQ end of the spectrum ( even though the SPL was pretty decent) Tight, well defined bass good to about 25Hz. Never saw that form factor used again, too bad, as it would fit in some pretty tight spaces.

I've owned several JL products including 3 first generation Slash series car amps. When those hit the market in 1997 or '98, it was a big deal because JL subs were among the best at the time. I'll admit, these were the best amps I'd owned up to that point, BUT also by far the costlyest. (500/1 $650, 300/2 $450) Back in the old school car audio days (late 80's to mid 90's) quality USA made power was around a dollar per watt, so in 1998 these were really pricey amps, relative to the competition. I'm aware it costs alot to do your own R&D and such, but I just cannot justify purchasing something that's 2× or 3× what other quality brands cost. In all fairness, all 3 of those amps from 1997 still work.

Can you explain why you would compare the subs 30dB below where they start to roll off? To me this is where most people place the cut off for harmonic distortion meaning once it’s 30 dB below the fundamental note you can’t hear it. Wouldn’t this also mean that you wouldn’t hear this if it’s 30 dB below where the sub start to roll off? So why compare frequencies too low to hear?

JL Audio has fantastic performance. Efficient, low distortion - and great looks as well. If you have space constraints and can spend a lot, JL Audio is a good candidate for sure. But, the long term reliability issues of their products make the price too high IMHO: I've had quite a few JL products, and especially the biggest, most expensive subwoofers all struggle with suspension durability (mass vs. spider strength) and rotting foam surrounds. Anyway, I find it really weird to buy a $1100 8" subwoofer.

Would be nice if you could review some european manufacturers' gear, specially subwoofers, as there aren't many reviews and i think there are some good ones from brands like for example magnat, canton, quadral and xtz. This would be great for your european subscribers (and maybe for others) as british and american brands' subwoofers become a lot more expensive here.

I’d be happy to. But i’d have to find somebody willing to send them to me. Most of the stuff I review comes from viewers or manufacturers, or I’ll purchase it myself.

Really nice review. Interesting it does so well on the ULF, especially at higher levels. I would like to see the 10in.

Below 20Hz the output capability actually tracks pretty closely with the KC62 that has less volume but more driver surface area and presumably less excursion. Maybe as a takeaway from the last couple videos: Even for 1100€ (or however much the KEF costs) these companies can't cheat physics, if at all possible, a bigger sub would be a better option. But in a small space small subs have come a long way and money does buy good performance with certain limitations.

You are correct... you can't cheat physics, but you can negotiate with it. :)

none of these small subs are really subs, in my view... when they roll off at 40hz, meh... i want 25 to 40 hz flat. for me i don't care about 16-25, just rattles my windows.

when you have heard the deepest bass or the high impact bass you do not want to go back :) i went from a 21" subwoofer to 6.5" for about a decade, life happens sometimes. it can be done

some people for car audio said that 6.5" create cleaner bass. everything for speaker is a trade off

@@hom2fu That's straight up bass mythology. There's nothing inherently superior about smaller cones ... actually, quite the contrary. It's a physics equation; ie., it's the area and stroke of the cone. Other characteristics certainly play a roll as well, including but not limited to; - moving mass (affects sensitivity) - inductance (affects speed) - force factor across the stroke - power handling

If looking for 8" sub for ht or music, just pick up a quinn q8, toss it in 1.4 @ 24 with a vent mach of .04 and feed it 200w. Save money, gain extension and transient response.

While they don't have the wireless app features, I'd look at the Rhytmic subwoofers as well.

Shouldnt these small subs be cheaper? Less weight and materials…

you can make small things cost more if you put in the effort, if you scale things up and keep the quality a 12" cost twice as much. it all makes sense.

So its one of the most overrated subs especially that people praise them as best ever. I think perlisten subs might outperform them but I don't remember probably would need to compare graphs to be sure. Still its really good for the form factor
