Just a heads up the floaty slop in gear isn’t the transmission but it’s actually the rubber bushing that is in the factory shift lever. If you swap in a B&M shift lever it makes a world of difference

Good, informative video. Just ordered my new JL Rubicon, would have loved a manual transmission but had to compromise to an automatic to maintain marital bliss...:) Thanks for sharing.

Very cool Comp video, I don’t have a manual but I have wondered if it was much different from the JK. Keep up the good video’s dude!! I’ve heard other KZbinr’s say that your videos should hit the algorithm and get suggested more if it’s at least 10 minutes long, I also think it helps with the monetization. 👍🏻 great to see your channel growing.

I just purchased 2018 Rubicon Recon with a 6 speed and its been a while since I drove a stick vehicle. As soon as I went to pull it on to the road I was in love with it. Sure, its definitely not the most refined manual trans or vehicle on the face of the earth but my god does it put a smile on your face just putting around haha. Even with the long shifts I just thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I just had to buy the Jeep! Thank you for the video and keep them coming!

Congrats on the new Jeep man! What’s funny is I actually enjoy the manual on the Jeep more when I’m off-roading for some reason haha Thanks for watching!

I think when you describe the throttle differences, you are actually describing the axle ratio difference (3.73 in sahara vs 4.11 in rubicon). Nice vid

I went with the auto on my JK, but I love the truck feel of my dad’s 2011 manual JK. Just feels badass and rugged
@twoallame3 жыл бұрын
The points you make are valid on the jk. I have a manual transmission 2016 Rubicon hard Rock and the shifter is not only loose but also noisy. Also noticed that my clutch is squeaky like it sounded on your video. But all in all it is something that I have gotten used to over the 4 years I've had it. I drove a 1500 dodge truck Manual transmission prior to this....not much different

Good review and comparison. I got a completely different impression from the JL clutch though. Even AFTER Stellantis resolved the issues with that really, really bad pressure plate (that was replaced with the Y07 recalls) I still found it to be one of the lowest feedback clutches I've ever driven. Don't know how your Camaro is set up, but I switch between a Mustang tremic that has a much firmer breakpoint, and it still feels more like the old CJ manuals than the Rubicon. If your parents' JK is a 13 it probably has the pentastar I'm guessing? But still had the Benz transmission that came with that 3.8 Benz sled, so FCA was just being cheap IMO. The JLs have a Japanese transmission (Aisin I think?) with crazy ratios and I'm just not happy with it. I found the throw way too long so I installed the Holley B&M shifter which reduced the throw and gives much firmer feedback in the gear changes. But I think that's just a personal pref. I understand Stellantis wanted to make the DX (driving experience) more like a car for consumers and not everyone wants a competition experience, so I get it. But it's getting disheartening to keep watching the Wrangler's slow death march from the CJ banger to soccer mall minivan.

Good comparative between the two model years. I’m still in the research mode on Jeeps and I’ve never owned one previously. Thought about a four door, but the reality of it is my wife and I don’t really need all of that extra storage space. And having driven MINI Coopers for the past ten years I can see that I’d be happier with a JL and it’s improved transmission. Thank you again for the comparison.
@drivenmad20894 жыл бұрын
Hugh Wolfe the JL is definitely the way to go if you’re willing to pay for it. I’m so much happier with my JL than I would be if I had bought a JK. And no problem man, thanks for watching!

Finally ordered a 2021 Red Rubicon with manual transmission. I know they had a recall on the 18, 19 and 20 JL manuals. Did you get yours fixed and what was the problem?? Keep up the good work.

Thank you for this video, it validates a lot of how I feel about my manual 2018 JK ( last of them made). However, what's your take on the JL steering? I felt it to have less responsiveness or a bit unpredictable on curvy roads. Maybe it's now improved. I love everything else about the JL manual. Trying not to regret my decision lol. Thoughts?
@drivenmad20893 жыл бұрын
Honestly on my JL I seem to get a lot more feedback then the jk. Of center it’s a little loose but I wouldn’t say it’s any better or worse from what I remember. Haven’t driven the JK in a while! I personally like a bit more feel. Thanks for watching!
@BalanBro23 жыл бұрын
Just thought I'd add: The floppy JK shifter is because of a rubber bushing where the shift handle connects to the transmission. Changing to an aftermarket billet aluminum shift handle will eliminate almost all of it. I personally did the B&M, and it's a night and day improvement. I have a video shared on KZbin about it

How does the start/stop system work on the JL and specially when starting on a steep hill?
@drivenmad20892 жыл бұрын
Any time the transmission is in neutral and your foot is off the clutch it will turn off when the engine is warmed up. It also has hill start assist where it holds the brake. Luckily you can turn it off though. Thanks for watching!

I hear the JLs ratios almost render 6th useless unless you can be doing 80-90 on the highway. At 70 5th is too short and 6th has now power to maintain speed
@KubanKevin7 ай бұрын
I would not listen to Matt Maran. This engine doesn’t need to be at 3k rpms to maintain speed

But is the JL better than a JK with the B&M sport shifter? That might be a closer comparison. Jk stock shifter is nothing to write home about lol
@drivenmad20892 жыл бұрын
Sure that might help the JK, but the point was to compare stock to stock not modified to stock. Thanks for watching!
@buick1955 Жыл бұрын
The JK gives you no clue from the engine when it's going to stall when letting out the clutch. I don't like to over rev the engine while engaging the clutch. Since I'll be the one under the jeep replacing the clutch. The engine will not buck or shake to let you know when your close to stalling. It just stalls like you turned off the ignition. You just have to get use to it.
@gaddexrivera709910 ай бұрын
The only thing I didn't like and I am uncertain about the JL is the signals on the front. Jeep shouldn't have put the signal lights in the fenders because often when you take it offroad, those fenders usually gets scraped and damaged especially when you go through narrow paths with boulder of rocks. I mean it's not in a solid panel, so bottom line you are most likely to lose those lights. Just my two cents.

IMO the JL clutch made it feel like a little toy and completely put me off from buying one-feather light. The ZF8 is an awesome auto and would opt for that over any manual JL and I don't enjoy autos. 2006< i6 manual feels the best, rugged and durable. I wish they were equipped with Tremec manuals so they felt like they could take some beating and are super easy to swap out.

I've heard the JL's manual transmission is plagued with problems. Leave it to Chrysler to screw up a manual.
@gooddaymate11714 жыл бұрын
How is it plagued? I've had mine for a year and it's great, along with tons of others. The manual transmission in the new JL is the Japanese built Aisin transmission, and Toyota owns a big chunk in the company.
@spuriouseffect4 жыл бұрын
@@gooddaymate1171 The manuals are going through a recall right now, and I've seen a lot of people reporting on other problems they've been having with them. You may have got lucky. Other than a couple recalls, I've only had one problem with my 2008 JK with 150k, so I've been lucky. Other people seem to have all kinds of problems.
@gooddaymate11714 жыл бұрын
@@spuriouseffect can you tell me what sort of other problems people are experiencing with their manual transmission JL's? ALL vehicles have recalls, even Toyotas, Hondas, and Subarus. I've seen the clutch plate recall diagnostic test that each dealership needs to run, and if the Health diagnostic check passes, no clutch replacement needed. Most people I've spoken to that went in to get their clutch checked never neede a new clutch, just a hose that needed a sleeve.

Good Day Mate it has premature clutch wear. That’s it
@hellaacapella Жыл бұрын
@@noahnagle1449 that’s a blessing in disguise… putting in a heavier clutch into a JL will help it off-road, so I won’t mind if mine takes a crap prematurely!
