It didn't actually sink... The power of the fans dug a hole in the water and as it did it would get lower... It's not completely ruined the fans for a start should be ok.. electronics etc are salvageable.

When I was in Jr. High, my science teacher had a working hoverboard that he built, and would occasionally bring out into the hall to let his students try sitting on. It was done with air, but I don’t know exactly how it worked. I think I remember it being quite loud, but this was around 10 years ago, so my memory isn’t great. It always surprised me that nobody had tried this on a larger scale before, when we obviously had the technology and know-how to do it. This video brought back that memory to me, and was super neat to watch. Thank you!

This is an awesome video, your dedication and engineering prowess are inspiring. If you made it like 10-20% more powerful so that it didn’t need to fully rely on the ground affect, you may be able to get it to work over water and move independently without too much extra power / danger. A hover board that uses drone control to keep you at 3-5 feet and make steering easier would be a pretty viable product.

This explains the failure in the video, as the hoverboard is a pure GEV. However, with additional lift--i.e., generated by airfoils--even the diminished ground effect over water could be sufficient to keep a GEV hovering, especially if it was constantly moving away from the water it already disturbed. This would require significant speed, but that makes sense for the ekranoplan. TL;DR: Airfoils and speed.

If you use the downward air from the outer fans to trap a high pressure under the middle of the board, you can use less fans, less batteries and electronics, and seal holes, making it lighter and more effective. For water you will need to interact with a larger ground effect region so your bouyant force doesn't go so low into the water and splash up, meaning you need to make the board wider and keep the fans away from the surface and splash, or keep the size and place the fans higher, interacting with more air and trapping more volumes of high pressure or velocity air. This is why hovercraft use skirts, because you can pneumatically fill the area with far less energy than continuously jetting yourself off of atmospheric mass and ground backpressure.

One issue with water is that the weight of the board and the person standing will likely displace the same amount of water, spraying it up and around in a bowl shape, which happened. I was cringing knowing that would be the only result

You could see what was going to happen when they tested in the dirty lot. All the loose particles got kicked into the air and were cycled through the fans continuously. The water didnt' have enough surface tension to withstand the fans pressing against it kicking up massive amounts of mist. Because the ground effect relies on the ground being solid enough to push back against the air and they tuned the board to not fly up without the ground effect the only result was the board descending into the water.

A good rule of thumb. If its going on or near water. Just make it water proof. Dont even bother not considering it. Just do it. Also. Drainage. Water will get in, so give it a way to get out. Think about your directions of momentum and place your holes accordingly.

I know super conductors won't work for this project, but for future reference if you need a bunch maybe consider teaming up with NileRed, he made himself a bunch in the past. Also I'm an electrical engineer myself; you said your scared of those fans getting stuck on at full load, but have you considered using a short circuit safety relay or something along those lines to current limit the supply? I can think of a few things you can do to prevent such a thing from happening. So obviously your using DC so you're not using a VFD (variable frequency drive) to control the speed of the motors, but you have to he using some kind of drive that's using resistance or something that's controling the speed of the motors and usually there you configure a safety limit too. It's alot easier to do it with a VFD on AC motors using hz, just because limiting the frequency that the VFD outputs limits the voltage too because they go hand in hand, for instance if you do 30hz instead of America's standard 60hz that's half the cycles so it would be half the voltage, so being that you get alot more control over AC versus DC a inverter might not be bad idea for another project. Current limits, hertz, list goes on and on what you can do with a VFD, I even have limited AC motors to certain amount of RPM's.

You could try tuning the angle of the outer motors for more stability, and so that you can swerve easily, with that design, you can curve the edges and curve the front and back of the hoverboard, Maybe you could add sensors that measure the wind coming back up and you can use that input for a kind of flight controller Anyways, really cool 😊😊

There's a way of using wireless routers to take 'images' of your form to actuate by gesture from other rooms, that was developed nearly 20 years ago, and quickly disappeared.

I'd love to see you build a bicycle with such wide tires ...that even with just two tires, you could use it amphibiously! (on water as where the as well as regular ground). There are other people on KZbin who have created bicycles with large tires that work on water but they are always with three or four tires. I'm talking about extremely wide probably somewhat flat tire things... that would keep the bicycle upright even on water (with only two rotating rings). It would look ridiculous but… but that's the point :-) I suppose you might even have a world record on your hands.

Really nice video, though a little correction regarding superconductors is that when they are cooled down the magnetic field is being forced around it, though with modified superconductors you have small "pores" running through called flux tubes making it so that the magnetic only being able to pass through the material in those small tubes making it so that the magnetic field gets locked into place (quantum locking)

Could you try making a paraglider that can be deployed like a normal parachute and also automatically refold itself after you've landed so that it's immediately ready for use again? It would function like pretty much every glider found in video games.

You need to curve the board and fans so they help self correct like a wing on an aircraft. A wing on an aircraft is never flat, but tapers up at the ends to offer less lift as the plane rolls off of level A ^ wing would be unstable, but a V wing would be stable. The V is over exaggerated, but you should get the point. The side fans and the front and back fans should point down and out. I wish you luck, because I'd like to see this fly!

These videos are incredible! Just moved to college and am having a blast coming up with awesome projects to make in the maker lab here, one thing I have been looking into is a “Dragon” drone, a bunch of drones stuck together that can move independently like a flying dragon, it would be sick if you tried to make this!
