Quick science lesson: An airbag actually doesn't cushion you at all. All it does is increase the time of impact, which therefore decreases the force of the impact. An example of this is if you try to catch an egg. To catch it without breaking it, you need to move your hands down during the period of impact.

idea: for a safety feature, make the bottoms of the pistons rounded so that they tip over easier after they fall out, because it wouldnt be very good if one of them just so happened to stay standing up after they came out and your foot landed on it. it would either stab into your foot or make you tip over and land on your side

but it could also mean that you lose ballance couple miliseconds or less after launch when they are still touching both the mechanism and the ground, while the flat ones still give a certain sense of ballance :) ? ( not sure tho)
@reaper419110 ай бұрын
I like that idea, but it might hinder the effectiveness of the piston to only make contact with the ground at a single point instead of an entire surface. It may also introduce some undesired uncertainty in your thrust direction if any of the rounded pistons are at different angles with the normal line to the ground

Hey, I think that if you add 4 pneumatic pistons in the knees (2 for each, and one in each side) and connect then with the jumper in your feet, this may bring more stability. That is a technique we use in semi exoeskeleton to help people with injuries to stand still. But you will have to modify the pistons and attach a pressure sensor on it, so when there is only one increment, the pistons will fire. Plus... If you add a false background in the box with stretched cloth, you can put a huge mushroom on it, and then when you jump with the stability adjusted as I pointed you will be able to get the mushroom out of the box, put a pressure sensor and a midi player on the cloth for the sake of... Nerd happiness! 😂😂 You rock! Huge fan in here since the beginning!

Do you think you could automate the trigger release? Like build some kind of pressure sensing device into the shoes, and then design a program that when you've applied enough force into will then release the trigger on its own and launch the pistons. It think this will be a good idea if you ever intend to upgrade the design in the future. That way they could be usable for more than just standing in place.
@CameronTille Жыл бұрын
i had the exact same idea
@squidee Жыл бұрын
If anything a photocell will be the best. When it is placed underneath the shoe basically you can always guarantee that it will read out no light when the shoe is placed flat on the ground. When jumping into the air, some light will naturally come out from underneath and hit it. Not to mention nothing travels faster than the speed of light so this will probably give you the fastest reaction of when you get off the ground. There are several issues with it though like how it can only be used pretty much during daytime and if the sensor gets obstructed by dirt it can lead to unpredictable triggering

I’ve actually had this kind of idea for awhile, but instead of using pneumatic pistons I would use electromagnets built into the boots (or technically into itself) that would apply enough forces into the ground to launch up high or forward very fast, and potentially even help withstand high impact falls from certain heights. Of course EM’s provide their own challenges to figure out which is I’ve been a while to get around to building them, but I think I have a solid jist of how it could work in theory.
@Robofrog100 Жыл бұрын
@@14supersonic pretty sure that's not how electromagnets work
@14supersonic Жыл бұрын
@Robofrog100 Well, of course the EM's themselves aren't generating the force used, but it's the repulsive effects of the EMF that will create a spring-like effect and can be transferred to create enough force to launch a user off the ground. There would be some kind of physical medium in between the ground and the boots for the transfer of that energy, sort of like the spring stilts he mentioned in the video. The material used for that medium I'm still trying to figure out, considered something like fiberglass from one of jlasers videos in the past. I'd reckon with the right configuration It'd be more practical and efficient than those stilts that are purely mechanically driven.

Okay, the thing with the jump height record where the guy seemed to float for a moment was because of his arms, he forced them upwards very fast upon his jump so he could push off with more force and jump higher up, and he forced his arms down at just the right time so when he reached his peak he was pulling his body up as his center of mass shifted down, keeping his feet nearly level for a bit longer. You could use that for long jumping to get a bit more hang time and clear a longer gap.
