I found that he was a genius in song writing ever since I heard his greatest hit: It never rains in Southern California in mid-1970s. . Time has proved I am right. 99 miles from LA (linking driving with missing one's beloved). . Down by the river (protest against pollution)...The air that I breathe (true reflection of how one feels for one's love). Smokey fatcory blues (protest agaisnt indutrialism)..... All so moving, story telling and so close to everybody's life. Good old days ( the old men shake their heads and say we' ve seen them all before.... )

Hall of fame, of course! Like Neil Sedaka. Multitalented which even included the sense to give away songs that other artists could do even better. Most remarkable since Hammond´s own voice was something most artist only could dream of..

Very Gifted. there is a very good interview on KZbin called: Albert Hammond SongBook where Albert reveals little things like he doesn't even know what you can the black keys on a paino are called. and this! "when he gets a tune/melody in his head he has to get it played and the "thought/idea" only lasts for 30 seconds. Genius.
