I am studying for N2 and came across this video. I used to live in Japan, so my listening is pretty solid. I wish these higher level videos (N2 and N1) had no English/romanized subtitles on them. If I want subtitles, I will turn on the Japanese ones. That's what I used to do when I watched TV in Japan-- JP audio/JP subs. If I had to stop and look anything up, I did, but I think it's better not to have any English on advanced videos.

You would benefit from ユカ先生 (Japanese with Yuka)、her N2 and N1 content is JP-only. "Nihongo Class" channel is JP-only and has advanced content as well. As does 日本語の森 is another good one too. And "Meshclass Japanese" is another great one. These channels helped me pass N2.

Could you use this in the context of not being able to eat a certain food? For example: 定食はおいしかったけど、生ものはたべずじまいでした。

I don’t understand... she’s using 2 different versions of “to finish”.... when she’s explaining it looks like she’s uses “終わらせる” for example she said 「この本を最後まで終わらせることができませんでした」 but when she makes the grammar point it switches to what looks like 終わる for example 「終わらずじまいでした」 ive never understood how to express finishing things in Japanese because of the 終わる verb. It’s always changing to different forms I can’t get a clear explanation anywhere. Can someone help me out here?

Why did you use the potential form here? 会えずじまい not 会わずじまい?

on the Coto website it says: The use of this grammar point is somewhat similar to a past tense negative potential verb. However, the use of 会えずじまいでした instead of 会えませんでした indicates more emotion. So there is a nuanced difference.
