I was at the Os vs white Sox game and another thing with that call is that is was never explained to the fans. Like all the sudden the manager is coming out all the players are coming off the field and that’s the game. There’s got to be someway to explain what’s happening when the umpires call stuff because we all had no idea at the stadium. Also Gunnar seemed to be confused when he caught the ball like he clearly didn’t feel interfered with.

The entire thing about social media and better camera angles being a case of why these bad calls stand out more shouldn't even be an argument anymore. I've heard the same thing every year for what, the past decade? The issue this year hasn't been with plays so close that we need slow motion replay to see if the call on the field was right or not. It's egregious calls like this, strikes that were very clearly out of the zone or yeah just pick any player to be kicked out. It's almost as if the umpires are doing it on purpose to show that nothing can be done to them. If it's something they're doing because they feel like they get no respect, they end up losing respect every day. Or maybe, they're just that bad now.

The umps made the call according to the rulebook. MLB rules clearly state that intent is not a consideration in that call. Just b/c MLB threw the umps under the bus, it doesn't change the facts. Trevor wants the ump to change the rules to fit the situation, and that is mot at all how that rule is applied. It's not only a bad take, it's factually incorrect.

@davidsorensen2116

The catch itself doesn't; getting to the ball does because the ball is live and runners can try to advance. If the runner tripped Gunnar, he would have had the chance to run to 3rd after the ball fell (or was caught by the third baseman who had no one backing him up and was also coming in)

The umpires have inserted themselves into the games this year more than any other season. More in the first 1/3rd of the season than for entire seasons in the past. Imagine being an umpire and ending an exciting game as one team was on a comeback all because of a technicality, and one which is never called consistently. What a rip off to the fans who paid to attend the game only to have the umpire make himself more important than any player. Plouffe was right. There are interference calls that can be made all the time by the rules, but they're not because they'd be bad calls. Why did they do it now, destroying what had been an exciting game.

Trevor: "I don't care what the rule says, in life there is feel". Gotcha. So in a tight game, in the last inning when a player gets in to a rundown and then runs out of the basepath clearly to avoid being tagged the umpire should just use "feel" to let that go because fans want to see the game continue. Or the winning runs are on 2nd and 3rd with two outs and the batter clearly strikes out on a checked swing 3rd strike - but the umpire should use "feel" to call it a ball and let the game continue. Right? The rule book is clear. There is also an associated MLB rules case book that helps umpires handle specific cases. I have umpired before. Umpires need a rule book to follow. To anyone that umpires at a high level this was clearly interference. It was obvious. It wasn't hugely egregious but it was obvious. Henderson had to swerve to avoid running in to the runner who wasn't paying any attention to where he was. That is interference. And the umpires are taught to make that call immediately. They don't wait to see what else happens during the play so they can use "feel" to decide if they should call it or not. They are taught to make that call immediately. The umpire has no idea what may or may not happen later in the play. Maybe Henderson camps under the ball and then instead of catching it, it ticks off his glove and rolls in to follow territory. Then the runners could advance. The umpire needs to make the interference call as soon as he sees it. They are taught to point to the offending runner and call out "that's interference!". Then the rest of the play continues. They are not taught to silently watch the play, wait to see how things turn out, take the score in to account, see who is coming up next and then decide whether or not to call interference. That just isn't how it works. MLB has a set of rules. Umpires are there to enforce them. And yes - it is like pulling someone over for 37 mph in a 35 mph zone. But that is how sports work. If a home run is foul by 4" should we just call it a homer because we are using "feel"?
