If you haven't even seen it I recommend Streets of Fire from 1984. It's the movie that inspired the game developers to make Double Dragon. A very young Willem Dafoe is the evil gang leader.

There was also a Double Dragon animated series that predated the movie by a year. It was a GI-Joe style american animation, and they ran with a couple of the concepts from that, but the plot of this movie is still wildly out there and far removed everything else in the IP.

Honestly, the worst part about this movie is how absolutely underutilized the power of the double dragon is when Bimmy and Jimmy acquire it. Because Robert Patrick doesn't have any super powers, just the ones he got from holding one half of the medallion. So when they got both halves there was nobody strong and powerful for them to fight. They didn't need the medallion to win this, they just needed Robert Patrick to NOT have the medallion.

I’m disappointed you didn’t mention Al Leong as the dude in the beginning. The guy had bit parts in like every action movie of the 80s and 90s (also the part of Genghis Khan in the first Bill and Ted movie).

The movie is actually more in line with what the creator of the game wanted the story to be in the game. The game was supposed to be a mix of mad Max and Fist of the North Star.

This movie is simply absurd. It starts out with a mythical legend, then halfway through you're sitting there laughing like crazy trying not to spill your beer and popcorn. "Dude, wtf am I watching here??"
