Nothing pleases me more than to watch a father pass along valuable training to his children, when your boy jumped down and started helping that was a wonderful moment. He felt confident enough to start right in, well done dad building confidence in our children is one of the most important lessons you can help them build.

Your final product proves you took the correct approach. I recall quite few comments on pt.1 calling for a teardown. Salvage of those original full log rough cut ceiling beams retains such a nice original feature (how much would that cost as a new construction extra?) matching the door bottom to the new floor, everything framed in the dry, floor joists and plywood solid as a rock really pushes back on the tear down/new const. approach and you were able to complete the work in winter (IN THE DRY!). To me, what stands out was your upfront detailed design work because everything fit. The exterior ground surface drainage is perfectly sloped away as well. The owner is going to greatly appreciate that insulated basement floor slab along with the insulated foundation walls - great return on investment. The whole job is the same quality as any new construction. The drone shots show that nothing moved on the roof line or walls so it proves you were correct in your salvage and rehab and structure bracing approach. What a great lot location and view. This just proves that your upfront (unseen) design work skill is the extra worth hiring you for. Beautiful job. I can just imagine how nice those beams are going to look after a light sanding.
@jmuller863 жыл бұрын
thanks. Alot of comments saying tear down would have been less work and money. I dont agree though. The cost of the materials in the roof (which have doubled in the last year), plus the cost to dismantle by hand most of it and then clean up the mess would not have been less than the extra few days it took to maneuver around inside that building, put the beams up and reset those windows. Plus I had a dry/heated structure to work the concrete in all three pours, which was invaluable in this cold weather. But then you also add in the new taxes on new construction and that does not go down or away forever. Thanks for noticing with a positive mentality.

@@jmuller86 -yes indeed, lumber here in Ontario is double $ now (when you can get it) from last summer, and went up the last 25% since November. You clearly now how to crunch your numbers as well. The numbers don't lie do they? I spoke with a fellow at the local lumber yard here about it and he said builders are following the transport trucks to the yards and offering extra cash to them to take the whole truck load. Building a reputation for salvage/restoration of old style architecture is a very good thing. Some of that old growth wood - just can't be replaced. A friend has a 1922 house with all solid 12" chestnut trim and doors and quarter sawn oak floors. Can't be had for any $ anymore. Best Wishes for 2021!!

I bought a Stanley 22oz. framing hammer in 1988 and I still have it today. I've done just about everything with it, (framing, demolition, trim work, etc...). An intermediate weight hammer is fine if you use it right. The rest of the crew used Estwings for the most part. That Stanley was just right.

Very impressive. I am doing many of these same things in a renovation (house built in 1920, balloon framing). And, I'm a one man band. It is agonizingly slow doing all of this bespoke work, fitting new pieces into old pieces, dealing with slants, tilts, out of plumb, out of level, termite damage, never getting a clear hammer swing or being able to tie in like you would with new construction. One of these experiences will be enough for my life.

Yes I love the hammer, I’m a Dewalt man. You can send me the extra for my delayed Christmas present. I didn’t understand what you were explaining to us about the foundation until I saw the inside showing the floor sills. Then I understood about the foundation being about the floor. I like the way you cut out the ICF to get concrete where you could bolt to it.You are a smart cookie. Now tell how we are getting into the crawl space or I’ll see it later. You do good explaining what’s happening now and next. Stay safe hope y’all had a great 4th

Double the work in winter for the same job in the summer. Twice as much work and cold miserable work environment. Double the equipment failures and double the effort to maintain equipment. Just to find your tools you have to suit up, shovel out, chisel ice out of trucks, then whene you find everything, it’s constantly change schedules due to weather, always heat and cover everything. and then the salt eating vehicles, trailers and equipment. It’s a nightmare. Jobs pay the same in winter. I live in upstate ny. It’s great country with many challenges for a construction professional. Jesse doesn’t show all the struggles and failures of the day. He shows mainly production of the project accomplishments
