Yeah, totally agree - too many Greenies weaken the mystique of the original and that mystique is solely attributable to the hands of Peter and Gary. This is a Disney-esque way of Gibson & Kirk maximising income from a brand of folklore until people lose interest and move on to something else. Just as an aside, Epiphone Les Pauls do have a carved maple cap similar in depth to a Gibson but they are plain so they then add a flame veneer which gives the figuring effect but in a cheaper way.

I bought a "Greeny" from Gibson around 2020...for under $2,000. It's called the Les Paul Classic...the stock wiring has the out-of-phase push. I'm glad Gibson's marketing department hasn't caught on. For $1500...that should be an ebony fret board and a real maple top. I can stomach paying $1500 for MIC. The workmanship can equal anyone's....but the materials should match. Indian Laurel and a veneer top? Not even close. Glad they threw in the case.
@RByrne Жыл бұрын
It isn't just the phase switch. The pickups are much different, as well as other bits. There's nothing wrong with the classic. I've got one, too. The USA Greenie I got is an amazing playing guitar, after I put 2hrs of polishing into it and cleaned up all the tool marks. The Epi greeny I tried yesterday was shit. Played terribly, felt like sandpaper, sound was all over the place, and it looked like a kid made it. Agreed that 1500 is fine for MIC if the quality is there, but laurel and veneer belong on a $500 Epi LP, not their most expensive model.
@sonix180d9 Жыл бұрын
How are people still getting it wrong that current Epiphones just have veneers? They have a actual Maple cap with a Flame Maple Veneer. Trogly has plenty of videos where he takes the pickups out of the current Epiphones and shows the cap. And if you look at one that has a lighter finish you should be able to see a stripe the top under the binding. Even the Les Paul Classic Worn has a full Maple cap.
@gearmeister Жыл бұрын
I actually like the caps without the veneer too, the Epiphone veneer looks ok but remembering George Harrison's "Lucy" it was a transparent red with a curly or figured side on the cap & the other side was plain maple & Gibson stated that in the late 50's, early 60's, when they were trying to finish some Les Paul guitars, they used what they had left. Example of a beautiful plain top: A friend bought a new Les Paul Custom in 76. It was a sunburst but a plain top cap but that guitar was beautiful & played amazing because it was still in those "fretless wonder" days

@geraldpinkerton6412 Жыл бұрын
Can’t you read? It’s a maple cap WITH a maple veneer? NOT just a veneer. And yes, mine has REAL mother of Pearl inlays. It also has a one piece neck & a 2 piece body. I’m sick of people saying that the Greeny is EXACTLY the same as the ‘59 Epi. It’s not! I own both. The neck is different. The number of pieces of wood is different. The ‘59 has plastic inlays, the Greeny is heavier, over 10 lbs. Altough it’s not a US bridge, the Greeny does have smaller studs that give it that authentic look. And a US bridge wouldn’t fit on an import spec guitar anyway. So yeah, I bought one, because I collect Epiphone signature models, so it’s a must have for my collection. I also bought the Adam Jones Custom & the Alex Lifeson Custom which were $1300 each. Is that too much? Raising the quality & price of Epiphone hasn’t “cheapened” the name, it has elevated it. Where a guitar is made or what’s on the headstock no longer is a reflection of quality. Watch a real channel like Anderton’s, where they actually know what they’re talking about, & you’ll see that again & again in their blindfold shootouts. Epiphone has come into their own as a company that also makes high end premium guitars & it’s about time. Something is worth only as much as people are willing to pay it, & the fact that the Greeny are sold out almost everywhere is an indication that the interest & demand is there to justify the price. I don’t regret pay $1500 for this amazing guitar for one second

Is that audience big? No idea, but it is me. Yes i have gibsons and have owned more gibsons than i have now. I don't love the highly figured top or how bright yellow it is or the silly knob look of the greeny in general, But it would give me the chance to try out the out of phase sound and pass it along to someone else if it's not my thing or i get tired of it.

What a lot of guitar players don't realize is that Epiphone has been making some really hard to beat models for awhile now that don't have any signature associated with it unless you include Les himself. I have a Traditional Pro III Plus that came with Gibson pickups, a '57 classic and a Super '57. Also has our of phase, coil splits and a 15db treble boost. I paid $500 for it used in absolute perfect condition a couple years ago. I don't think it had even been played much. It also has the long neck tenon, and while it does have a flame veneer it also has a 1/2 maple cap under that. Also have a Les Paul Gold Top Pro with p90s and a big ol fat neck. Every guitar player that picks it up plays it for at least half an hour, lol. Both are great instruments, and I have less than a grand in them. I'm definitely one of the guitar players that rolled his eyes internally when I heard there was an Epiphone Greeny even before I heard the asking price. From the looks of it your Gibson Les Paul is a Future, am I correct? I have one of those too, but the previous owner switched it back to having single ring single line Klusons. Don't know if they are real or not. I've been thinking about changing mine back to the Steinberger tuners and I'm curious; how does it do staying in tune? I read somewhere that it changes the string angle which is supposed to help, although it wouldn't take much to improve Les Paul tuning stability, lol.

It's even worse here in Canada. $2049 CDN for the Greenie LP, an offshore made Epiphone! I know Epiphone makes a stateside Casino in the Gibson plant to Gibson and historic Casino standards that retails here in Canada for $4600, so I can rationalize that price, but over $2000 plus tax (13% in my province) for a Asian made guitar? GTFOH!! I know inflation the last ten years will account for prices creeping up, but the last Gibson I bought was in 2011, the 2011 Gibson 60s Tribute SG, which was with the small pickguard and P90s for a hair over $900 CDN ALL IN WITH TAXES. An ACTUAL made in the U.S.A. Gibson with a rosewood fingerboard and mahogany body/neck for under $1000 CDN. Now Gibson wants to sell and off shore Epiphone in Canada for over $2000 CDN? I think that the Epiphone Greeny is a great guitar for those that would like a more affordable version, but at $1500 for an Epiphone Les Paul Veneer top version that comes with an Indian Laurel freboard is too much. $1299 should have been the tops for this particular guitar, where at least you still feel like your sort of getting a deal. I sort of don’t understand either the Gibson USA/Epi versions. I feel like some of the allure of greeny is the worn look. If you’re after the out of Phase, then Gibson has several models now that have the Out of Phase push pull; Classic / Trad Pro for not much more than Epi Greeny new. I have to say the Epi finish from the pics, just looks fake IMHO. I was actually looking at the Gibson USA greeny, but people had pointed out it’s basically a “faded” LP that was $1k cheaper. Really at the end of the day, Epi’s highest model is $1,500 and Gibsons lowest model is $1,500 (tribute discontinued and modern lite will be base US model). They felt this action right sized both line ups price points.

There's a certain lemming quality to purchasing expensive, relic'ed guitars to me anyway, but whatever. I have a growing collection that proudly (for me) doesn't include any Fenders or Gibsons. Those beginners who make it a living or lifelong hobby then buy a better guitar down the road. But pricing a guitar at $1500 serves nobody. Those who want the real deal will just buy it, and those who want a cheap guitar are not going to fork over the money. The whole narrative surrounding this wonderful instrument and its history has been commercialised and monetised to the point of a joke...fortunately Gary and Peter's incredible contribution to music and guitar transcend this instrument. To me its a travesty that Hammet owns it, I'm just not a fan. Gsry sold it after losing the unfair court case from the German band that sued him for Still Got the Blues. Gary sounded awesome on any decent Les Paul right to his final gigs available here on YT and therein lies the lesson.

The description at Sweetwater says maple top with a veneer. Everyone knows what a veneer is. You left out a very important fact in your review. Perhaps you're just ignorant.

My specs are straight from the Epiphone website. You’re aware that a full maple top is much thicker than a veneer yes?

@@TheGuitarHistorian, it has a maple top and, on top of the maple top, there is a "AAA figured maple veneer ".

He just doesn’t know. Perhaps if he watched a real review on the epi greeny where the actually take the pickups out he would see the carved maple top on it. But I got the feeling he not one to take corrective criticism well. Mine will arrive in a couple of days. And will post pics and vids here. That is if he doesn’t block me. If you don’t see them he blocked me.

@@philipfarias3448 I don’t block people unless they use profanity or are abusive against people. Anyway, I stand corrected. However the maple veneer with the “flames” is the thin part and I think people should know that.
