This is a re-upload of Jo Ann Castle playing Swanee. The original poster of this video only recorded the right audio channel. I've corrected it and reuploaded it for those of you who want to listen.

JoAnn Castle was only 20 when she started on Welk and always had that great smile, warmth, and looked like she having a blast.... what's not to love? She understood that this was about entertaining an audience and she really entertained - some modern performers dont treasure the audience they way these old timers do.

There is no need to go around to multiple videos from the same artist just to shit on them. You should let the artists speak for themselves through their performance. If someone likes an artist, just let them. This isnt a political debate, we aren't trying to decide who's going in to a hall of fame, nothing important is happening here. People just want to listen to music they like, and although you have every right to do what you're doing, it doesn't mean than you're not an asshole for doing it.

contd---The avclub article has in it, a KZbin clip of the absolute high point of unintentional humor on the show. It is Gail Farrell and Dick Dale (dressed for a Midwestern prom night) singing "One Toke Over the Line"..REALLY! It could have been viewed as wonderfully funny irony, but it's obvious that Welk was not playing it for laughs.He was simply pandering to the young people when he called it a "modern spiritual." The young people were in fact laughing at him, and he didn't have a clue.

Would we say that the piano hammers are not moving because of the video compression? Or what is going on here?
@superslammer3 ай бұрын
Oh yes... its absolutely the horrible quality. I got this from another channel that had it in low quality and only one channel of audio. So I grabbed it and mixed it to mono and reuploaded it. There might be a better quality version elsewhere though. :)I can't believe people still watch this. I'm not a lawrence welk fan at all... I just liked this song :)
@robinowen785215 күн бұрын
@@superslammerthis song is timeless! Thanks for correcting the audio. I read elsewhere that she (and others) often pre-recorded their solos for the best sound quality. This decorative on-screen piano was muted for performance. Whenever she plays "live" it's on a grand piano.

I respect your opinion, and of course musical appreciation is simply a matter of taste. But I would suggest that you broaden your appreciation of ragtime piano (boogie woogie is different), by understanding that the super fast tempo style of ragtime was a performance style that developed long after the ragtime era. You can research it, and find that Scott Joplin and the originators of the form intended that it be played in a stately measured tempo. Not a flashy breakneck pace.
@joekrozac11 жыл бұрын
Well said, and bravo. And your analysis of "Dannys998877" is absolutely correct, he IS an asshole (with apologies to all the more honorable assholes out there).
@superslammer11 жыл бұрын
Again, you're free to not listen but some people enjoy this kind of "*%)$" ... Every person is entitled to their opinion but there's also a point where you might consider not raining on other people's enjoyment. It's just music, let people have some fun in their live withour your over analyizing things. -- Also this video has gotten me the most views of any of the few videos I've had posted. Must say something about her. Maybe your opinion is in the minority.

Would have been a sweet gesture if perhaps Lawrence would have gifted it to Ms. Castle at the end of the run but considering how notable of a cheapskate he was I doubt that was the case.
@spagandtuna11 жыл бұрын
Nothing against Welk, he was tops in what he did, but why Castle locked herself into his brand is a mystery to me. Damn she's a kick ass pianist.
@superslammer11 жыл бұрын
I read about all that stuff after I had started listening to her. Even though her life is a mess, it doesn't mean I can't enjoy her music. I don't have to agree with her life or choices to enjoy a good tune. And I'm far from a lover lol... I just enjoy that style of playing... Its cheerful. But look, if you don't like her you're free to not listen to her as well. No offense.

TV was so much better when Lawrence Welk was on. Also the Honeymooners, &c. PS I am 109 years old.
@Dannys99887711 жыл бұрын
No offense taken, and I appreciate that you maintain an open forum for comment.Of course it's a matter of musical and performance taste. Swannee is not the worst JoAnn Castle on KZbin. The very worst is Maple Leaf Rag played at the breakneck tempo in which she played everything, and dropping at least 10% of the notes. Did she have the ragtime syncopation right? Who could hear it at that tempo? Jumping on the piano stool like a flea and flashing a phony smile at the camera every five seconds.
@joekrozac11 жыл бұрын
Sorry Bill, my apologies to you and if you feel it necessary to delete my comments, by all means do so. I have to tell you, that when I read the comments from that $*)#&U "Dannys998877" my reaction was to give him a dose of what he was dishing out. Again, my apologies as this IS your channel and I intended no offense to you, but only to zero in on that joker "Danny".

As for Welk and the odious Jo Ann Castle, it's hard to know if Welk was actually as clueless about music as his fawning 60 and 70 year old audience was, or if he was just in it for the money and didn't care. A KZbin clip shows the Welk performance of....wait for it......"One Toke Over the Line," which he refers to as "a modern spiritual." Performed by "Gale and Dale," from Oklahoma and Iowa respectively. I swear to God, there should have been a law against what Welk did. :-)
@Dannys99887711 жыл бұрын
I just wish there were at least a FEW performers who would take ragtime seriously, and take the time and trouble to perform it correctly. On KZbin right now are a couple of idiots who play ragtime blindfolded, apparently in a speed competition. Another involves a woman who plays it lying on her back under the piano, her hands up over the keys in a reversed position. What IS it about ragtime that attracts clowns like this?
@Dannys99887711 жыл бұрын
Interesting! "Stupidest comment!" But I notice that you don't challenge the facts of the matter. That would be hard to do since the facts about Jo Ann Castle are a matter of public record.
