When this song first came out I really did not understand the full meaning until I lost my job and my husband left a month later and my daughter did not want to move to a new state with me to my new job. After that it became my FAVORITE SONG. I remember driving to NC and singing alone to this song and knowing that it was going to be ok, I would make it no matter what, and THANK GOD I DID.

I had emergency brain surgery to save my life in 2001, this song was playing on the radio the day I rode home. This became my motivation to walk and talk again, now in 2011 I am an RN in an ICU ...and I pay it forward to my patients that are struggling to cope and feel defeated to listen to this song...and truly feel the words.

We lost my brother to a drunk driving accident back in 2002, June 30th. The anniversary of when he was taken approaches & the painful hell of the tragedy is as fresh as it was the day we lost him. The wails of grief my mom cried at his funeral are forever embedded in my memory. It never has healed. I played this song for her; he was her only son. I'm glad all of us can share in drawing from the simple strength of this song. Thanks, everyone, for sharing your stories. Please don't drink & drive.

My BD Baby at 39.578 was riding to work with a best friend and a trucker pulled in to their lane so Sean hit his brakes & left the road but trying to turn the wheel back on to the hwy and it dug mud that prevented it & they were flipping over & over. It threw Mike threw the windshield snapping the belt at his neck and not wanting to let him go snapped his neck dragging him with the two or three roll overs before throwing him! The rest is Horrfic with head trama three places plus! Milked faught almost a month but the hospitol talked him into pulling the plug before I could get back up to him in the hospitol! His baby brother was there with him holding his had. I lived in Oklahoma & they were in Texas & the hospitol wouldn't let me stay at night but all 12hrs a day! My Baby's gone! Never leave your child at all in a hospitol! Heaven has My Baby with Family.

I sang this, and "How can I help you say good-bye" to my father when he was on his death bed when i was trying to convince him that I would be ok and didn't want him in pain anymore... he passed away less than half an hour later... I truely believe he was trying to hold on as long as he could and needed us to let him know we would be ok. Now when I hear these songs I think of him and smile that he's not in pain but cry at the same time. I love you daddy! You raised me handle everything fine! :)

I've lost my parents and my sister and I can relate so well to this song. It's beautiful and it just means that you should have strength and roll with the punches. The bad times are inevitable, but it doesn't mean you should sulk. It will always "rain" and sometimes you have to learn to dance. I'm only 15 and I know that there is so much ahead of me that there is no reason to be stuck in the past. So I say bring on the rain, cuz I am thirsty anyway.

i used to play this for my wife on guitar and our son loves music to. when he still was not speaking a word at age 4 several different diagnoses were floating about each holding a similar doom to it,then one day as if he'd been speaking just fine he pointed to my guitar and said his first words. ' play song daddy' i started to play this song and he sang right with us as if nothing had ever been wrong and has been chattering away every since. i love this song.

Everytime I hear this song it takes me back to a very hard time in my life. I was arrested for public intoxication and battery (because I pushed a bouncer). A few months later I was arrest for violating my probation by drinking. Even though I was 21 at the time, the requirements for my probation was no drugs OR alcohol. I tried to be slick and drink anyway. I showed up to report to my probation officer one afternoon without a worry in the world. Unbenounced to me, I was sweating all that crap out that I drank the previous night, and she could smell it on me immediately. I wasn't really worried though, I hadn't had a drink since the night before, at the very least 12 hours before, but it was probably more like 15. So I thought for sure I would pass the breathalyzer test. But I didn't. In fact, I blew just under the legal limit to drive. So I almost got another DUI for driving up there. And yes I said another, I got the first one at 18 years old. So basically once all that happened, along with a lot of other signs and issues that I had been dealing with all my life I knew I HAD to get help. I finally broke down and agreed to go to inpatient treatment a.k.a rehab. The last night before heading to treatment I spent the night with my Mom. We did a lot of talking, and surprisingly it went pretty good. I think she was just happy I was finally getting help. So the next morning we pack my things up, put them in the car, and headed for "The Friary" that's the name, I believe it was named that because long ago it had been a monastery for Monks. My Mom drove me there to rehab, and on the way this song came on the radio. And we both lost it. My Mom was crying, I was sobbing. But it wasn't out of sadness or fear, I was afraid, but not of rehab, just of being sober. This song couldn't have come on at a more perfect time. It was exactly how I was feeling, and it gave me SO much hope. After everything I had been going through for the last 5+ years I finally broke. I was ready to surrender. Best choice I ever made. If only I knew back then how wonderful like would be a few years down the road! That's what hurts my soul so much about these young teens taking their own lives. They robbed themselves of the best years of their lives. And who ever said High School would be the best years of your life needs to be slapped. That's SUCH bullshit. It takes a whole lot of work, patience, and strength, to get through those high school years. And they can be fun. But OMG! Life gets so much better afterwards! But hindsight is always 20/20. Now here I are 13 years later, I'm married, I have a beautiful son. I'm a freelance photographer, and I'm SOBER!!! :) No matter where I am, or what I'm doing, when I hear this song it always stops me in my tracks. It's such a powerful song, with a very deep meaning for me personally. My Mom lives in the Orlando area, and got to see her perform it live! Lucky!!! But it's okay, I'm happy and content with just getting to hear it. Jo Dee, thank you so very much for singing and sharing this song with all the people like me in the world. Your music can change lives. And listening to it with my Mom on that day changed both our lives. I can't thank you enough! Much love and many prayer always, Carrie

Even though it came out in fall of 2001, had never heard this song until the spring of 2002. It came on the radio one day as I was driving down the road. Within the span of a couple of months I had lost my job, had my father pass away, and found out that my previous employers had screwed up my withholding the year before, leaving me owing over a thousand dollars in income taxes. On top of all that, for literally the first time ever in my life I was having trouble finding new employment (ended up being out of work for well over a year). So the day this song popped up on the radio I thought, "Yep, I can relate," and it helped me keep my head on straight.

A single battle lost , but not the war...I might feel defeated, and I might hang my head, I might be barely breathing, but I'm not dead, no...thank you Jo Dee for such powerful words, and I know we have all experienced these seasons in our lives!!!

I'm so incredibly sorry for the loss of your precious child. I've lost both of my children. My 15 year old son died 4 years ago and my 22 year old daughter just this past March. I listen to this song to remind me that I need to go on and that my kids would want me to get through this. My thoughts and prayers are with you

I hear everybody. I also want to add that I heard this song for the first time in years today. After hearing it with much more years of wisdom added, I feel this song could easily be about the battle against depression. Just listen again with that in mind. If you do not have experience with depression, this could help you understand the situation of depression. Just my thoughts I wanted to share.

Nightingale loves the rain and she understands and flies toward you in your kind of rain. Rain even from melted snow waters the seeds that lie waiting for sprouting from the Sunshine of spring. I know you by heart...so bring on the rain! Can't have a rainbow without rain! Lady N

I was just diagnosed with cancer this week, and right afterward this song came on the radio. So I looked it up and am seeing many others who have related it with their cancer. Crazy.

I first heard this song the day after September 11th. I watched everything unfold from my living room window. I was in shock. when I heard this song it gave me hope that the future was still possible. time had stood still to me for a long time. Everytime I wanted to give up I would hold in to this song with all my might. thank you for the song.

John Ligotti I remember listening to this song after my 2 year old daughter’s funeral on September 11, 2001 . She was murdered by my ex boyfriend. It took me a very long time to be able to sing these words and mean it , but by the grace of God I’m finally able to move out of depression. I can finally sing these word and I know that my daughter with with my Heavenly Father and I will see her again one day . I’m finally able to move on with my life and even though my daughter could never be replaced.. God gave me a beautiful daughter to fill my arms and love . So thankful that even in our darkest moments , God restores what we’ve lost .

Come back Jo Dee Messina! This song is such an inspiration to me. I'm so happy I found it again. I was diagnosed Thanksgiving day with a third leukemia diagnosis. Now its relapsed in my cerebral brain fluid, had to have my scalp shaved off (can you say Skullet?) and a port type tube implanted under my scalp where treatment has been given twice. More to come. My last relapse in my blood was treated with Arsenic Trioxide. Yep. So this entire song...every verse, the chorus is relatable for me now. I miss your voice and spunk.
