This week Jo talks to a mum who was drinking alcohol, taking drugs which ended up in her neglecting her child and later in the show, another mum confesses that she feels like she can’t bond with her son.
Family conflicts are usually kept behind closed doors - until now. Fresh from her role in Supernanny, Jo Frost brings her experience to a new talk show format.
Real Families brings you stories of modern day family life from around the world through the eyes of children, parents, and parenting experts.

Butter Scotchnut Yeah but the repetition was grating. She was doing the exact same things n every house. It seemed like all those people could watch a few episodes & come up with the same solutions themselves. This show kinda takes that n2 consideration.

freedom seeker Thank you so very much for saying-writing this statement. I wish you could feel how I felt better. I read the comment like two hours ago and just enjoyed experiencing how my outlook upon my divorce changed for a much better one. This is exactly one of the greatest thing about social media. You never know just by sharing your experience how many and how much you can change a person feeling for the better. Of course there is social media’s negative side, but I still never stopped seeking the good in it and doing my outmost best interacting with people, I probably never gonna meet but sometimes they are the only ones who could be that help you desperately needed and wished for so long. In this case it’s you. I thought you should know, that you helped someone today more than I wished for. And I think it takes a great person to see the blessings in a really challengingly difficult life event like divorce with having children’s. Thank you so very much.

I agree 100%, I have a daughter who will be turning 12 in December, and myself an her father split when she was 4 months old, we just fell apart and out of love, disagreed on almost everything on parenting, we had a messy break up, he accused me of things I can't mention, I banned him from seeing her, he took me to court, got 6 weeks of supervised access in a call centre, every second Saturday for two hours (12-2) and I was told I could drop her off and leave her, or stay the two hours... I certainly wasn't leaving her with him and it did take me a LONG time to trust him again so I could let her go with him without the fear of him not returning her to me, he tried to accuse me of being an abusive mum which I'm NOT and I thought he was going to try anything to take her away from me, he tried to go for full custody, got social services involved, I was investigated, and even the social worker said she was writing it off as a malicious allegation... Skip forward to now, he's now married to a wonderful woman, who he met few months after we broke up, and of course I judged her, wasn't accepting of her, didn't want her taking my place, but as it turns out she was the woman he needed to grow up, get his act together and do the right thing - I met my now husband, he and daughters father had their reservations, and after a while they started to get along, and now, 11 years down the line, we, all 4 of us are strong, loving set of parents and know the only person who matters is our daughter, people compliment us all the time on how we get along, we're a parenting team and get on so well, me and my daughters step mum go out places together, have a laugh, my hubby and ex text each other about football, we're a proper team and get along so much for better, our daughter is happy and thriving knowing she's actually a lucky little girl she has two sets of parents, two homes, (she now stays with them at the weekends) she gets two sets of birthday / Christmas presents etc, we both buy her her school uniform, chip in for school trips etc... I know a lot of people don't have that, but myself and her dad get on alot better apart.

I'm a labour and delivery nurse. Far too many young Mums feel like failures if they have trouble breastfeeding. Don't be silly! Your baby's eyesight at birth is about as long from the breast to Mum's face. That's the bonding darling. That's why adoptive parents can bond so well. I've seen too many painful breasts and crying Mums. Your babe just wants to see you and you calm. Be at peace, give them a bottle and lots of cuddles. Be careful to acknowledge your post-partum depression, if it turns into thoughts of harm, you must tell someone and you can easily get help. It's out there, dear young Mums. God bless you all.

I really feel for Mum's who can't breastfeed. I stressed soooo much, and through a lot of support, education, and perseverance, we are now 15 months in breastfeeding still going. I feel so blessed, but I also know that had I not been so prepared, I would have ended up FF... which obviously isn't the end of the world (I was FF and am perfectly fine 😅) but breastfeeding means so much to me. Thank goodness for nurses like you who really help mums who aren't able to bf, feel they are enough. A lot of mix of supportive care, and proper education around feeding is absolutely essential.

Mary Anne, as a maternity nurse, I can assure you that we do teach everyone how to latch on with their babies. In fact, there are lactation nurses, specifically trained on breastfeeding who come and see the Mum if she's having a difficult time. I'm gobsmacked that any maternity nurse wouldn't bother to help you breastfeed your newborn. That's one of our many helps, or so I thought! I'm terribly sorry if that was your situation. I hope everything worked out in the end.

had oh no...I ha some extreme difficulties breastfeeding several of my kids but had a Midwife and unbelievably supportive people. My last nursed until he was nearly two lol! But you hear too many people talking about how all that matters is that they are fed.....no...that isn't all that matters lol. Particularly if the mum is already suffering from depression and feeling like a failure for having difficulties breastfeeding. The last thing someone like that needs is anybody remotely encouraging them to give up and letting them believe they "couldn't breastfeed."

It's maybe not blatantly obvious, but there are the occasional moments that make it seem true. :/ Jo, on the other hand, seems entirely focused on the family, and what's best for them. @@bel3133 Dr Phil has been known to strategically leave alcohol in the green rooms when he is interviewing alcoholics and its been reported that the crew have shown heroin and crack addicts exactly where to go to score drugs before they appear on the show. That way they will be heavily under the influence and more likely to be extremely outspoken, more confrontational, and out of control than they would have been had they not been provided with their substances. And that creates drama and controversy. And that generates more viewers.

Jo Frost is a childcare expert, that's all. She wants to help reunite families and mediate. She is a people-person and good working with different dynamics of people. It's like saying Dr. Phil isn't a good communicator yet is no longer a licensed psychologist, despite his doctorate in psychology. They're just television personalities and good communicators, but hey, if their results work and it's effective, who is to undermine it? There are many registered therapists and they lack emotional intelligence and the capacity to relate on a social capacity. So, it's really not black or white... Having said that, I'd have to agree with many other commentators that Jo Frost was more appealing to watch on her show Supernanny; seeing the transformation from families and overcoming familial obstacles that we all might face. To conclude, keep an open mind and don't assume the worse. I think Frost is doing a good service; who knows, this might help many struggling parent viewers! :)

Unfortunately the pressure to breastfeed is ridiculous in my opinion. The pressure on being a mother is so tough, breastfeeding is not everything! Love & caring & cuddles equals bonding. Skin to skin touch, making sure the baby is warm & clean. Bottle feeding can be amazing, you know how much your baby has, you can just get up & go a little easier, you can prepare the babies milk. I actually know that the pressure to breastfeed will not make you bond. Mother’s need less pressure & more information & kindness, life can be so unfair!

@@esidarasun8151 Encouraging breastfeeding is not what she was saying, though. The pressure on young moms to breastfeed can actually make it less likely that they'll be able. There's so much pressure that it can leave a young mom feeling that she's not a good mom if she's unable to breastfeed without supplementing, or unable to breastfeed, at all. Our society is a lot more tolerant of dads that don't have good relationships with their kids, dads that don't make time for their kids, tyrannical dads, etc. But moms still have pressure on them to be as well-equipped and prepared as their (most likely) stay-at-home moms were. It's just not fair, and it ends with moms feeling like they have the weight of the world on their shoulders, which most definitely doesn't help with lactation or bonding. Yes, there are proven benefits to breastfeeding, but it's not the end of the world if you can't. Breastfeed if you can, but don't feel guilty if you can't. There's enough pressure on new moms, as it is, without all of this nonsense compounding it.

CPS don't always get notified. Heck I know a girl who is an adult now who said when she was a girl she missed too much school (kindergarten) because of her mom was too messed up to get up in time to take her daughter. But because the grandmother would step in and help on weekends and bring food during the week at times (didn't know where parents were but she was home alone in her room playing) maybe it was just enough for CPS to never get notified. Also sometimes things end up worse when CPS takes the child. The system is far from perfect.

why was the child allowed to live with a druggie mother in the first place? the kid wouldn't have issues if she wasn't around someone that was doped up on drugs ffs the mother brought all this on herself.. selfish woman. No wonder that kid has problems . She saw you as a different person... she is well confused no wonder shes rebelling. Why did social services allow her to live with a drunken mother that took speed and cocaine ... ?????????? clapping cos shes clean ffs she shouldn't have been on drugs in first place! Ive got zero sympathy. its the child i feel sorry for out of all of this.

DJ Amanda Adams mom states in the beginning that as soon as she was honest with her mother about her substance abuse, her mother took her daughter and she entered a program. After finishing the program, she moved in with her mother. Of course she shouldn’t have started using in the first place but she’s gone through treatment, she’s looking for help with her parenting, she’s aware of her failures and is making the necessary changes to make up for that.

I know it does happen more than people realize. The system especially in diverse sides with the mother. I know a mother who was an addict and cheated on her guy and he ended up raising their daughter on his own and then when the son was born she got the rights because she kicked him out and he had no place to live. If only they knew that the mothers allowance the mother got was blown on herself and not the daughter and the father struggled to afford to take care of the daughter alone. He never wanted to rat her out but still I feel someone should have.

I disagree with you. I'm not sexualizing a child I was just asking if she was wearing makeup. If they showed her putting on makeup then I wouldn't have even asked. I would have known the little girl was playing. You guys need to stop assuming everyone who asks a question is accusing anyone of anything. She's stacking blocks in the clip.

That is a possible answer, too. Sometimes film can make people's skin (and everything else) too red. She just may have naturally redder lips and the film just pronounces that.
