Good afternoon Cindy; Thanks so much for your support and enthusiasm - we're definitely grateful to have peeps like yourself on this journey with us. "Team Feathers" are animal-actors, so it'd be a liability to _deliberately_ teach them how to hunt. As a Professional Falconer (versus someone who is a private Falconer engaged in the Art strictly for the purpose of hunting), I use the knowledge, wisdom and insights of falconry to guide and develop our Feathered-ones for performing for the camera. This means we use pretty-much all the same techniques in readying one of our companions for flying, developing their endurance, and solidifying the _relationship_ this Art is meant to be about, without stitching those techniques together to put a grouse, cotton-tail or other quarry on the bar-b-que. This being said, 'Mohave' has figured out garter-snakes and chickadees are edible...and thus we tend to refer to him as "the garden menace". Its deeply wired into raptors to hunt, so this really didn't come as much of a surprise. We'll be filming some material very shortly in which we'll show 'Mohave's' progression back into flying-fitness; the falcons, particularly 'Halo' and 'Scirocco', will begin their conditioning phase shortly afterwards, and we'll be capturing those efforts too. Its my sincere hope 'Pfeiffer' will be able to join our youngsters as they start the process of building muscle for flying. As his moult was deterred by the person we purchased him from, he is full-on "catch-up-mode", pushing down feathers at an incredibly, but _delayed_ pace. We're doing our utmost to ensure those new feathers are protected as they come in, so I'm reluctant to push 'Pfeiffer' too hard or too quickly. As "Team Feathers" works toward being free flown in the weeks ahead, we'll be showing you that part of their journey, as well as a couple of surprises relating to how we develop a specific skill for camera. Thank you again for your support and enthusiasm, and stay-tuned! Best, Jo

The Falcon Lady thanks for the info, that is very interesting. That is very different from my country. Here if you are a falconer you must hunt with your birds and you can not use them in the entertainment industry.
@TheFalconLady
@TheFalconLady 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Cindy! That seems to be the case in certain areas in North America and beyond which outright ban birds of prey in entertainment, however we live in British Columbia which allows this practice. It seems like a shame to outright ban Falconry in entertainment all together, because as a creative I love the medium of film to tell my stories. If I can't use a real bird in my film or TV show, then it really limits how much the general audience or "mainstream media" consumes content related to falconry and birds of prey. If media is limited or controlled, how do people find and enjoy - or worse, what if they come across a bad representation of Falconry or birds of prey and that stays in their mind forever... And could that ban even be extended to something like KZbin, and then no one would be able to pass down their knowledge and passion for falconry. Just something to think about! Thank you very much for your kind words and support, Cindy! We look forward to bringing so many more amazing episodes :) -leah

Amazing! When I first started helping Jo at 13, one of my favorite things to do was to borrow a ton of Falconry books from the library to read and learn how to identify each of the sub-species of falcons, hawks and eagles. I would definitely start there, reading all the books you can find, looking up Falconry blogs and videos. National geographic has some phenomenal documentaries on the peregrine falcon, eagle hunting in Mongolia and a very special documentary on a young girl eagle Falconer in Mongolia as well - definitely see if someone can help you get a copy of those!! Thank you so much for watching our videos and we have so many more to come! :) -Leah

Hey guys, very interesting and informative series! Thanks for putting the time in to make theses videos for us. I have a question. This has to do with an earlier video in the series about cleaning the mews. As a child my grandfather taught me to spray the coop/loft/pen down with a 50/50 mixture of original listerine and water. As I’m sure you know, it kills 99% of germs that cause bacteria. I know it works to help keep chickens, quail and pigeons healthy. Do you think it would be good to use with raptors? Thanks again.
@TheFalconLady
@TheFalconLady 4 жыл бұрын
Hello "Rodmess', thank you very much for watching and your question! We routinely spray down the mews 50/50 water and vinegar every 3-4 weeks as part of our deep cleaning procedure. Regarding the Listerine, I would personally stick to 50/50 water and vinegar instead, because while Listerine (the brand) is mostly alcohol, it will have added chemicals for the minty flavor etc which could potentially negatively effect your feathered companion - and they are so very delicate. Straight white table vinegar works in the same way to kill the bacteria, as Jo likes to say "nothing in nature likes to be pickled!". I'll leave Jo to jump in with her biology-two cents, but those are my thoughts for now. :) -leah

Good evening Rodmess; This is a great question; I honestly can't imagine there'd be any reason not to use 50/50 Listerine and water for dosing the mews....might inspire some folks to brush their teeth more often too! LOL ;0) I'd probably still use the vinegar/water mix on the perch-platform and long-leaf astroturf mat, otherwise this is a nifty suggestion - thank you! Best, Jo

Good afternoon Wispy Spirits; Thank you for the great question. In addition to "Falconry & Hawking" which is a... _good_ source for providing a clear, easy-to-understand overall grounding in the Art, the manifestly authoritative text is, of course, "The Art of Falconry", by Frederick II. I also encourage practitioners of this Art to obtain a good text or two which will show you their physiological makeup, so books like "The Unfeathered Bird" are priceless in their value. Used copies of any of these can be purchased through www.alibris.com , or through Amazon.com. I'm currently looking into one or two other sources - I'll be chatting about them in future episodes of "Mo & Jo's Bookclub". Hopefully this gives you a starting point for book-buying - thanks again for stopping by. Best, Jo
