Is there any harm in proactively treating with asperzole? I have a large female red tailed hawk that will make a moist wheezing sound, but ONLY when she eats as she’s eating. She is up for molt and the first bird I have intermewed. I have some falcon asperzole tablets and if I wanted to treat her proactively since I may just be paranoid, would there be any harm to this? She eats well, good appetite, alert, and I keep an eye on her through a Blink camera in her mews.

I should also state that she has done this for nearly the last 2 months when I had to put her up early due to a severe ankle and midfoot sprain that I’m only just getting back to work

hi there this interesting im from the uk and here there is no requirement too do an apprentice ship too go into falconry,when you mentioned that here in the uk that most boys will ahve a kestrel as a first bird but you will see that its the harris hawk as a first bird. my fiancee is in the US and lives in seattle im looking at emigrating too the US in the next 6-9 months we are waiting for the visa too be issued which takes time, but i am looking at taking up falconry when i finally move there,i have done a falconry course at the falconry school run by BEN LONG falconry in gloucestershire ,but i have looked into falconry in the states i have been told that washington falconers association only allows red tailed hawks and american kestrels as first birds,i have just found that the international bird of prey centre in newant in gloucestershire has now closed down due too the covid pandemic and the last 3 years of avian influenza

Are you kidding about redtails or is it different bird in Canada? Moody redtails really? They are great birds and beginners can actually catch something with them, which is the point of Falconry.

Bumble foot is not always caused by a puncture to the foot. Perching on improper surface, especially for large falcons, causes a corn to form which leads to the bumble foot infection. Frounce can be cured by Flagyl or similar medication.

When casting, why not hood the bird to help keep him calm?
@TheFalconLady
@TheFalconLady 2 жыл бұрын
Hi again Dylan, thank you for this great question. While its pretty much standard practice to hood a falcon prior to being cast, (and _certainly_ a growing practice to unhood them again once they're settled into the casting-jacket), there are two philosophical "camps" where the hooding of hawks - particularly larger hawks, buzzards, and even eagles, is concerned. Some Falconers believe its acceptable, or even preferable, to hood these larger raptors just as a matter of course, and others, like myself, feel this can stimulate less desirable (ie: more _aggressive_ ) conduct from these feathered-companions. This is why its imperative for you to make swift work out of 'small-packaging' your hawk/buzzard/eagle for the purpose of casting them...it helps to keep the stress they *will* experience at a manageable level. Our feathered companions benefit from seeing what's going on (once their cast up) as they can see your facial expressions while you undertake the task at hand, be this coping, changing furniture, or addressing a first-aid issue. Imagine how much more stressful it would be for you were you to be blindfolded while sitting in a dentist's chair; never mind the fact you're a human being and the doctor can explain what he/she is going to do, you wouldn't be able to see what's coming, and thus mentally prepare yourself to put up with something which - logically - you _know_ is only temporary, and for your benefit. If you can't *_see_* what's coming, your stress level will - naturally - approach the stratosphere, (this is why some folks actually opt for being knocked-out when undergoing even some of the most benign dental procedures). Its my position, (and I'm in good company in this regard), given the fact birds-of-prey are self-aware, emotionally informed beings, their stress level is needlessly elevated by the practice of hooding them while we do something *to* them. Unless there's some overarching medical emergency in which hooding our companion will help to reduce their fear, pain and anxiety, allowing them to be involved with what's going on - albeit from the "cozy" confines of a casting jacket, will result in a much more foundationally trusting relationship between the two of you. Always remember, they will trust you until you give them good reason *not* to. I hope this offers a useful perspective to you, Dylan - thanks again for the question. Jo

Ok, i subscribed. 😁 Im a 43 year old white male. Ive been extremely passionate about falconry as far back as I can remember, but only learned that this way of life is still being done when KZbin first came out and a random falconry video appeared. I was beside myself when that day i realized this could be an actual reality for me! 😲 Ive been studying and reading about it ever since. And today, I've come across YOUR videos for the first time and i really love your demeanor and professionalism! I'm actually shocked I've never seen your videos before. Well I'm here now lol Once im able to buy my own home and property is when I'll be able to start my life as a falconer (as long as I can find a sponsor of course). Anyway.....thank you for being you and sharing these videos with us!! I will be watching every one of them!
