@JoannaDavidovich7 жыл бұрын
The story behind that is a little complicated: when Animaniacs was about the be kicked off of KidsWB in 1998, the network decided to have a marathon of Animaniacs cartoons. The gimmick would be that the programming would be voted on by fans mailing in postcards, and some lucky fans would have their name sung by Yakko in a fan version of "Yakko's World" during the breaks. I mailed about 30 postcards (I had a lot of favorite episodes) and planned to record the marathon in case Yakko included my name in his song. As I was watching and recording that morning, the wraparound segment introducing the "Please Please Please Get A Life Foundation" came on and that little exchange happened. I was in utter shock. Then I began shouting, screaming, and jumping up and down. I ran to go tell my dad (who was sleeping in on that Sunday morning) and just jumped on the bed still screaming and shouting, startling him awake and perhaps making him think the house was on fire, then I ran back to the VCR to check the recording. I planned to animate tall of this for this video, but I ran out of time.

If they can get a studio like Mercury to work on the show I think rigged animation could work quite nice for this (they animated and created the rigs for shows like Wander over Yander, Star vs The Forces of Evil and Lion Guard) I don't think the humor will be as good as it used to be though, with the way culture has shifted there isn't much you can get away with in children's cartoons, I feel like they are going to play it safe instead of pushing the boundaries like they used to. I honestly never really got into Animaniacs since it didn't play on any stations I used to watch as a kid, but I would hate to see it turned into something like the Power Puff Girls reboot, but I think that was more due to Cartoon Network having there hands on it. I'll keep my optimism for the reboot but I'm not going to get my hopes up. Also side note, your obsession with Animaniacs is, I don't know the word I'm looking for, Humbling, inspiring, adorable? Great video! I knew exactly what was coming when you reached down for the coolest thing ever! I agree with everything for the most part. Ideally I want to see the major contributors to the old show back in an authoritative and guiding positions along with a lot of new talent who "get it." I really want this to be a fresh Animaniacs for 2020! Of course, the original was fresh for the 90's and I'm sure they realize they have to make cartoons blending the classic gags with modern culture today, and not just a rehash of what they did already. I'm glad the VAs are on board as far as I can tell. They need some of the old writing and directing crew to make sure it's Animaniacs, but without the VAs, don't even bother.

A lot of great thoughts were put into this opinion piece. I also learned _way_ more about the show's production than I would have thought. But, of all the things Jo covered, there's one _glaring_ thing that I see as potentially being a huge blockade for the reboot capturing the "old show's" charm… and, that is simply… *parody and references.* _(Apologies for the length, but this is something I've been thinking about for a while.)_ One of the recurring themes on both _Animaniacs_ and _Tiny Toon Adventures_ was the "celebrity appearances," such as when historical figures or world leaders appeared. There were also charactures of pop culture icons, such as Prince, who would appear for a quick joke or a shout-out. Now, I've watched quite a few cartoons of the modern age and, for-better-or-worse, this sort of thing seems to be a thing-of-the-past. What I mean is… you don't really many appearances by _the_ president, or popular bands of the time, TV show hosts, or anything like that on modern "kids" cartoons. Even the most wacky and well-written of shows, such as _OK K.O: Let's Be Heroes!_ and _Wander Over Yonder_ don't really parody _people_ so much as _concepts._ The only place where satire of _characters_ or _people_ is still going on is with shows like _Family Guy_ and _The Simpsons_ who, unfortunately, tend to go for the _jugular,_ or do something so absolutely _absurd_ and _outlandish_ with their "celebrity guest appearances" that it barely even _resembles_ parody and falls into a category of bad fan fiction. You can't really watch an episode of _Family Guy_ without seeing a well-known pop culture icon do something _insane,_ but _The Simpsons_ has had a few of these completely out-of-character moments… in the form of _entire episodes._ A notable example is one that had Bart (the "mischief making boy" of the family) going head-to-head with a new neighbor, Former President George Bush, Sr, a'la _Dennis the Menace._ Sure, it's _kind_ of amusing? But, those things feel less "played for laughs" and more "we got permission to use their likeness, lets throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks!" But, I'm getting off-topic. Back when Steven Spielberg was the executive producer, the shows under him new how to be funny without being out-and-out _offensive._ People, trends, celebrities, other shows, _nothing_ was "off-limits." Nothing was off-limits… because, these shows were actually really clever about _how_ they poked fun. For example, one episode of _Tiny Toon Adventures_ had a segment dedicated to stand-up comedians with more-or-less "played straight" parodies of Emo Philips, Andrew Dice Clay, and Robin Williams. The later movies and TV specials made straight-up _satire_ of competing shows like _Ren & Stimpy_ and _Beavis & Butt-Head,_ too, but the thing is… they never went completely _overboard_ with it; if they had a statement of _any_ kind, they made it _brief_ and ended with a _laugh!_ On the other hand, _Animaniacs_ liked to make _entire segments_ about satirizing people and characters - which, in my opinion, is probably where _The Simpsons_ staff got the idea. In instances like that, celebrities such as William Shatner and Jerry Lewis got some _pretty_ heavy roasting, and even characters like the photojournalist from _Apocalypse Now_ and Barney the Purple Dinosaur were poked fun at to a point where you had to wonder… But, neither _Animaniacs_ nor _Tiny Toon Adventures_ ever went "too far." Not like the "adult" TV shows of today. Yes, some of these characters were portrayed "negatively…" but, they were rarely portrayed as "bad" people. Annoying? _Sure!_ Frightening? _Absolutely._ Egotistical? Pretty _regularly,_ actually… But, I do not recall a _single_ instance where a parody of someone - fictitious or otherwise - changed my opinion about them in a truly _deconstructive_ way. Part of this might have been that I was too young to care… but, when I re-watched some of these shows after I got older, I actually noticed… a lot of the parodies were actually pretty _faithful!_ William Shatner _did_ do some rather odd takes on songs and Andrew Dice Clay _was_ an unapologetic potty-mouth! And… that's where you see a stark difference between shows like that… and, the only shows of today that include "special guest appearances." When _Animaniacs_ comes back, will there be loving satires to pop culture icons, charactures of famous people, and references to people that make sense in the context of the dialogue? Will the show even be _allowed_ to do such things? Remember, after _Animaniacs_ was coming to a close, Hollywood was getting a little weird about "bad press" and the like. There was even a bumper about how much money Warner Bros. owed celebrities for just name-dropping _alone_ which, in this day-and-age where celebrities are _far_ more protective of their "brands" and whatnot… among other things I won't get into… I feel like that old "name-dropping cash count" bumper might not be that far from the truth. Anyway, if this reboot can't use that as an occasional prop for wordplay, a sight gag, or even stretch it across entire _segments_ without sparking some kind of insane war between fans of the show and fans of the "target of ridicule…" or, if they - heaven help us - go in a completely _different_ direction and try to either compete with _Family Guy's_ "gags" or beat the users over the head with less-than-transparent messages and opinions about world politics and the like… then, maybe it's would be for the best that the show _not_ come back. But, as the new saying goes: "just because a reboot comes out doesn't mean that the old thing suddenly stops existing."

Joanna, you made me cry Q_Q BUT FIRST I admit I am totally on board with you with everything you've said. Animaniacs has been my favorite cartoon show since... forever! Like many animation fans, I used to be the person who would cringe at the thought of a reboot. But after seeing the new Samurai Jack, a glimmer of hope has been put in me. It is a rare case, however, and one I don't expect to see here simply because of how the reboots of Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, Powerpuff Girls, and other popular classics have gone. CGI can work great for some shows but not this (in my opinion, no one does CGI better than the French anyway). In this day in age, it's about efficiency, it's about taking the easy way out. Very few fully appreciate animation for the masterpiece it truly is, and I have nothing but respect for those who take the time to do it all by hand. That is true talent. To get together all that Animaniacs was now would be simply irrational in the minds of big name studios. It would be a waste of money to hire actual musicians instead of using a computer, to get animators who draw by hand instead of a software, and to take the time to write music and witty jokes is unthinkable. There is a deadline already in place:2020. And deadlines often mean sloppy work which is rushed and thrown together last minute. It is unfortunate that reboots go wrong more than right; because like to many, I would love nothing more than to see my favorite characters living out their legacy. Thank you for making this and for being a person who I can look up to.

I've always wanted at least to transcribe the lyrics of when Yakko sang the names of fans, for addition to the AMLF -- if anyone actually still uses it... (Gosh, I can't remember the name of that marathon special... old age is doing a number on me!) Anyway, of course you're absolutely right. It's a cryin' shame that no one has been asked back save only a few of the voice cast (others, like John Mariano a.k.a. Bobby the Goodfeather, say they've not been called).

Keeper1st Oh my gosh- I am so sorry! All these years I just had it in my head that that was your name and I didn't think to check! What a "duh" moment- again, I'm really sorry. And finding that tape was a little bit of a miracle. My sister found it one day when she was cleaning out her garage and decided to check with me before throwing it out because she's awesome. Still no idea how it got separated from my tape collection which got damaged. Still if you ever get around to digitizing the Animaniacs Attack Marathon bumpers I'd be thrilled because the quality of my copy isn't so great. ...also again I'm so sorry for being such a dum-dum!

No worries. I do want to dig out some tapes and at least capture a videotaped moment from 1995 when some fans were watching episode 2 of Freakazoid for the first time (and others for the second time). I'd like to digitize that in time for the Virtual Freak-a-Con in March. I think Paul would get a kick out of it. Maybe posting some video clips from fan gatherings at voice tour events in '95 and '96 would be fun... or embarrassing!

I think any display of fan fervor is a good thing- reminds the creators they have support and reminds the studios that they have a lot to live up to.

2:14 I knew back when i first saw Monkey Rag your name sound familiar (i came to re-watch it to cheer me up) i guess the memory was just burry deep, that mystery science theater 3000 bit they where doing also wasn't funny to me at the time. other memory that came back are: When Yakko soiled citizen kane found a clip kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5nOlYxphJJ0e8U or the time when Stalin jump on Churchill belly kzbin.info/www/bejne/fprFeZiPabqchrc or the notorious fingerprints joke kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6nQcnZvhtpsZpo there are a few more that came back but i don't want to keep searching for the clips, For the most part the worry about the show most of the crew is coming back, and Steven Spielberg will be coming back as the executive producer if there is one thing we know about him from Ready Payer One is that he has high standard film maker, like lighting camera tracking, and other film making stuff. Two good example are the opening scene where it track the main guy going down the trailer, or the race scene where the camera moves in between all the racer and at no time do you fell lost. But over all the story was kind of boring and the characters where also boring, and the ending had some issue. but i mean i also thought Detective Pikachu was also boring. well i did almost shouted that Ryan Reynolds was the father after i saw the back of his head, but i notices the kids in the theater. In my defends it was both a School night and midnight at the time i saw the movie. The thing that i am worry about is 4 the Humor and tone the point of reference which is very different now then it was back then, like the Citizen Kane one, not very much people would catch that, but most people would catch a person eating a carrot and saying "what's up doc" but many be not from the movie it came form starting Clark Gable. so back then there where a fewer things to reference like everyone seen the Lion King, so everyone would get the jokes, but now thanks to the internet there so much to chose from i mean how many people saw Song of the Sea or Emara Emirates hero. but if they don't try to do many reference humor it might be better jokes . or it cane be like We Bare Bears where they make fun of lots of meme, which they do have an audience for and lots people do get the joke due to the popularly of the meme. the other main issue i think it will have that some of the jokes will not fly today, this are different then the one about the Prince, that one few under the radar. i mean like other issue some that where brought up with the The Problem with Apu, i mean they where never as bad as it was in the Simpsons early years. hopefully they are good i mean most shows take a few season to work out the kinks and they have two to work with even if the first season is bad they have time to work on it for the second and they should improve.

What kind of an Animaniacs Fan you are? ^^ The kind that sent SO many fan mail to Warner Bros. Animations, that you got a shout out from Yakko, Wakko and Dot on one of the Animaniacs Marathon on Kids WB in the late 90's! XD I remembered seeing that clip somewhere on your webpage! And I only sent ONE idea email to Warner Bros. for a Pinky and the Brain episode, suggesting that maybe the Brain could run as president or something! (It was YEARS ago and I don't remember what the idea was, but it was DEFINATELY about a president!) I got an email back from one of the staff, thanking me for the idea! I think that idea was either the Abe Lincoln episode, or Pinky for President....I'm gonna go with the Abe Lincoln one, because that was the closest to my idea suggestion!

I never knew they used a live orchestra! I always loved the music though! I remember when Tiny Toons first came out I was excited for what seemed like a Loony Tunes revival. While I loved the show, it never lived up to that. When I saw the first Animaniacs episode, I thought to myself, "This is the new Looney Tunes!"
