This song (and album) has been making me cry for 30 years at least. Just too powerful for mainstream music. Joan is not even mentioned in my Rock encyclopaedia, which shows how far under the radar she flies. Me, myself, I; the shouting stage; All the way from America... so many great songs, but none better than this.

Just discovered this song one week ago. I have listened to it dozens of times since then and each time I am moved from tears to exhilaration. I have heard a lot of Joan's music and actually own several cds, but this song escaped discovery. If you have never heard it, KZbin search Love By You by Joan (there is a studio AND live performance upload). Listen to both. Has been my favorite Joan song for decades - until one week ago when I heard this song.

This is from 'Whatever's for Us', which came out in 1972 and went nowhere commercially at the time, even though it included songs like this and was produced by Elton John's producer. It remains an obscure part of JA's catalogue.

A majestically beautiful song--I thought I was the only person who knew it but it's gotten nearly 75 K views. You know, even though her melodies were always great, Joan's lyrical ability is second to nobody. "Or questioned why my face was so distorted..." who would think to write that? Genius

"It Could Have Been Better" I was very sad last night You came by I was so glad though sadness covered The smile I kept for you I was waiting for the cloud to pass over Then I could show my love You could have made me laugh if you'd stayed But you left I was more confused than I was before you came I was frightened I saw insanity and tears I shouted for you to stay It could have been better If you had held my hand And smiled at me Or questioned why My face was so distorted I'm back in the sunlight again Oh I'm so glad It's only joy I wanna give to you Sometimes I feel lost and desperate Please forgive me If I show no sign of reasoning Or consideration In my bleaker times

This song was on Joan's first album, back when she was part of a songwriting/recording duo with a woman named Pam Nestor if I recall correctly. They split after the failure of this album. It's criminal that Joan never made it big in America. She has more talent in one finger than most artists ever have. AS a lyricist, she is second to nobody.

Love that song. Great vid too, love the bit at 2:50 when they dance, kind of symbolic of how good life is when a compatible couple are in sync and respect each other, past petty squabbles and at peace with each other and life and realising that potential and achieving great things together as opposed to the bit at 1:49 where things don't look so sunny.
