My dad used to sing this to me as a kid. He was really young when he left his parents to study abroad before he and my mom brought our family to the US and I remember as a kid thinking that my dad wrote this song because of how much he would sing it and how it related to his life that he would tell us about any chance he got. I was a huge Joan Baez fan back in the 60s, I had all her albums and would sit in my room listening to her songs for hours on end. She had the perfect voice for folk music, it was almost like a mystical magic how her singing captured the dark corners of my soul. I got the chance to see Dylan in concert in 1965, I only wish I had the opportunity to see a Joan Baez concert in person... That would've been my finest hour.

To my knowledge, she, Joan Baez, was one of the “ stars" at that time. "Her contemporary folk music often includes songs of protest or social justice." (quoted from the web). Still, she cares about her country for the present time. I don't know whether there is anyone like her in the “ singing industry worldwide" nowadays. So, I said she was the gift for the generation of 1960s.

Joan's voice is heavenly one of the most beautiful but also please listen to the version of the song by The Seekers the Australian folk band. The late Judith Durham, RIP, has an incredible voice and does a beautiful version which for me is the best. I don't actually think there's a bad version it's such a beautiful song ❤

I don't know what it is about Australian songs but they are always very moving and emotional - Judith will be sorely missed by many but she left us so many wonderful songs and memories.

The tone of her voice and appearance reminds me a lot of my mother. She loved that song and she was... tone-deaf, not that she would ever admit that. Once she was a teen living under a dictatorship, attending an American HS -where she probably listened to this song for the first time-, and then going abroad for uni. So yeah.. she loved that song...
