If Joan was so abusive why doesn't Christina change her last name ? She has been married a couple of times . She still goes by Christina Crawford which keeps her associated Joan Crawford.

My grandmother was Betty Batista. Joan said to her, "You are the only Bette I like." I grew up watching Joan on TV. As a boy, I sent her a Christmas card and Joan sent me back a thank you note. She was kind to children and strangers.

So basically, the kids wanted to be spoiled and Joan wasn’t having that. So, they hated her for not making them entitled, becoming brats, wanting them to earn their keep. Okay I see why the movie was made. So sad for Joan and all that she did for them . What a way to try to tarnish your mom’s name because of money.

I was a child when Joan Crawford passed away and when the movie came out. Now that I'm a middle aged woman, a psychiatric specialist and therapist, I see Christina for who she is in her interviews. The twins had a completely different view. Of course, this doesn't explain Joan's innocence as they were younger than her first two children. All four of these children were adopted. We now understand more about the nature vs nurture. I 100% agree with Joan being a disciplinarian. My Mother was to me and I needed it! I was never abused. I got a smack on the rear-end and a couple of light smacks in the face as a mouthy teenager. Abuse? No not at all and I'm thankful for it today. OF course I wasn't there to witness Christina's upbringing. But I can say one thing: most, if not all of my past patients and clients, who had suffered horrific abuse from their mothers as children, would not have released such a book as soon as their mothers passed away. Disclaimer: I have not idea what it feels like to have experienced such trauma nor live with it. I grew up in a secure and stable home where I felt secure with both of my parents. Christina was clearly an opportunist. Also, there are cases where one child or a couple of children suffer most of the abuse whilst the others do not. However, in these cases, the ones that did not suffer the abuse still witnessed it. The twins received money from Joan's will. However a small fortune compared to what Joan gave away to charity. Yet, they genuinely praise their mother and sincerely miss her every day, even in their golden years. This is because they appreciated her parenting style the way I do with my own Mother. Further more, they understand the privileged childhoods they had and the importance of becoming independent self sustaining women. I'm sure they were only too grateful for what they received from Joan in her will, as well as for their Mother's generous act of charity. This has remained consistent over the years. given Joan's own life story, I 100% believe that she suffered from OCD. This is a genuine, and what I refer to as a "torturous" illness I would not wish on my worst enemy. The sheer determination for success is something that Joan should be admired for, even if she has to bring out her "claws" and dig in if need be. It's called survival and it was a man's world in every sense back then. Finally, Joan Crawford is one of the most talented and gifted actresses to ever grave this planet. Just strip away everything you know about her and watch any of her performances and you will be taken on a journey through the mind and life of the character she is portraying. A true legend!

i find it hard to swallow a woman who maintained successful film and business carers as long as she did could have been such a mess. I can understand her alcoholism, it's a disease and given the pressures she was under, her risk was certainly elevated. But the farfetched stories in Mommie Dearest I suspect are exaggerations and concoctions. I'm sure she was a strict parent given her personal unwavering discipline, but I doubt she was abusive. As an actress, when she was good she was a great as the rest of them and the camera loved her.

When Joan adopted Christopher hereditary behavioural problems were not understood. I think there was a measure of truth in what Christina said but she probably massively exaggerated because she had her own agenda. Cathy and Cynthia were clearly appreciative children. I think Joan had a strong nature and may have been controlling in some ways but she clearly had a warm, generous side to her nature. Joan had a hard childhood and she had to fight hard to maintain her career and image. She was a far better actress than she has ever been credited with. Joan and Christina were not a great match though

I have always thought that Christina was a borderline or worse. She was disagreeable for the sake of being disagreeable. Elvis had her thrown out of his home because she was an azzhole. That tells the true story. She evoked distain. Im glad someone went to the trouble to defend a great lady. Sadly we don't have great ladies much. So R I P Miss Crawford and thank you for years of fabulous films that will endure long after the cheap shots have worn out thier welcome.

I agree with that. I’m sure that Joan lost her temper with her, but there are a number of witnesses that said that Christina acted like an entitled brat. The Elvis story is an example. Myrna Loy and Richard Benjamin both said that she was impossible during “Barefoot in the Park” in Chicago. Even an old roommate came forward and said that Christina tried to be Joan and put on airs. She brought up how Christina hired a car to visit her brother in the reformatory when she and the roommate had two of nothing.

My Grandfather and Joan loved together in the early twenties, they wrote each other weekly until her death, not to sure my Grandmother liked this , but she would say she was in the chorus when one was a star, unfortunately my Grandmother voice did not work for the talkies , Joan was very capable in the silent films and the talkies , and was known for her kindness and longevity in her friendships . And never gossiped about any one , quite rare in show business,

My favorite actress💞The book was so obviously written as fiction to generate money. Cristina has made her career exploiting her mother, what a sad life. What I hope she realizes is because of her book and the movie she has made people curious about Joan and once people see her on screen, this captivating woman, they become fans, so it's actually boomeranged on Christina. Where she wanted to destroy Crawford, it actually has done the opposite. 🙏😇

15:30 now I just finished listening to the entire audiobook on here with an open mind, and one thing that popped out to me that didn't sound quite right: It's hard for me to believe that a woman that seemed concerned with image and outward appearance would send her children to school in rags or old tattered clothes as a punishment...... No matter what was going on behind closed doors, I can see her being the type of person that's like when you go out in the street you are representing my household and our family name and I want you to look good..... Something about that story just didn't sound right

There is something wrong with this Christina person. I have a mother who was a disciplinarian, but I have zero doubt in my mind it was good intention only. She got revenge on the person who reared her - if Christina hates Joan so much, drop her last name? So disgusted. She used her mother as long as she could and when she saw she won't be able to profit off her anymore, turned around and tried to ruin her

She even said she grew up in poverty and she never wanted to live like that again. I think she had some weird OCD tendencies, but I don't think she hated her children. I think Christina harbored a little resentment because she thought she should be spoiled and entitled like some Hollywood's elite children were.

I agree. Joan didn’t want the kids to be spoiled. She wanted the kids to be able to support themselves in case they no longer had the money. Joan witnessed a lot of celebrities lose their fortunes because of changing times, and she experienced some setbacks herself. She also witnessed what happened to other Hollywood kids when they were spoiled rotten.

I wonder is Christina ever had an ounce of guilt for the dishonest hatchet job she did on her mother? Christina has a "flat" affect" I do think that there are people that have different, negative perceptions of life events, and people. This is the filter through which they see and remember people, and their life experiences. These people truly believe that these slights, events and negative experiences really happened. There's no way that they can be convinced otherwise. I have a couple relatives like this, even when I have produced proof that certain events didn't happen. Now, I don't argue, or bother with proof, common sense, and facts anymore, it's too sad and exhausting. I often wonder if this an "organic" condition of the brain, is it emotional, or both?

While it is truly heartwarming to have so many fantastic friends to say such wonderful things about you after you are gone (and a true blessing), how many of the people interviewed here were at Crawford's home at night during one of her drunken tirades? Christina stated that much of the abuse happened well after friends had left and the cameras were turned off. Abusers do not perpetrate their abuse while witnesses are observing and there are two sides to every story, the truth lying somewhere in between. Keep that in mind.

The book Mommie Dearest can not be called true, since Christina apon learning she was cut out of Joans Will was mad as hell. Rightfull so, where by she wrote an evil book, just to show her she would get the last laugh. Lets face it, no one wants to read or buy a dull book that has no shocking sensationalism in it. So what does one do, embellish it to look shocking in order to sell. Plus she knew Joan wasn't around to defend herself, so she could write whatever. So one needs to discount that book as pure fiction, like her other adopted children have stated.

Joan was a good actress, and people are appreciating her talent more now than they did when she was around. If Christina was a good actress, people would have still been casting her, even if she and Joan weren’t getting along. I saw Christina in “Wild in the Country”, and she was BAD. She was wooden and lifeless, and her southern accent was ridiculously bad. Joan suggested that Christina use a stage name so she can get her fame on her own merit AND there wouldn’t be any bias (positive or negative) toward Christina when she was looking for work, but she refused. Christina wanted to capitalize on being “Joan Crawford’s daughter”.
