I would love to hear about theWar of the Roses. It ties in with the Hundred Years War and this story in a way, as it focuses on the dynastic dispute that started with Edward III and Edward the Black Prince's deaths and lead to Henry VII of Tudor.
@Altrantis5 жыл бұрын
In the battle of Patay, which was briefly mentioned here, the English weren't startled by a deer, they *saw* a deer and they shot it with their longbows, and made a ruckus about it. The french scouts heard it, and they told Joan. She then took an unusual military decision. She sent her knights ahead to meet the English in battle, leaving the infantry behind. This left the french with a disadvantage in numbers of 3 to 1, whereas otherwise they would have had the numerical advantage. However, this allowed theknights to teach the englishmen much faster, before they had fortified the field with stakes. The result is often called "reverse Agincourt", a scenario where the french cavalry charge worked as intended, because the English hadn't had the time to fortify. The English longbowmen were slaughtered, for minimal French loses. The English lost all their longbowmen and would never use them against France again, as it would take a generation before new longbowmen could be trained. They would be defeated again at Formigny and Chatillon, and then they would never again have serious plans for continental European territorial gains again.

@@paradiseagent5881 She seems to have had an unusual sense of things. She was usually right about things she should know nothing about. It's why people began taking her so seriously. On the other hand, most french military victories in History seem to rely, in crescent order, on either a clever use of artillery, CHAAAAARGE! or a massive morale spike the french call "élan". These have always been their strengths and Joan played to France's strengths, hence "get them". You generally don't want to fight the french when they have access to these. During the revolutionary wars, at the battle of Valmy, the French began cheering and singing the Marseillaise. This was enough for the Pussian general to turn tail and march all the way back to Prussia, knowing even if he won, his losses would be too high to face the coming war with Russia against such a determined opponent. The outcome of battles tends to be totally unexpected whenever the French are involved, one way or another. A lot of countries have these sorts of consistent themes through history. For instance, you don't want to give Britain the benefit of time if you're fighting them, regardless of when in history. They will always make better use of this time than you. Or Russia will be willing to do things other countries would be horrified with in order to prevent enemy victory (more so than winning themselves), never assume they're beaten.
@LENZ53695 жыл бұрын
@@Altrantis "She seems to have had an unusual sense of things. She was usually right about things she should know nothing about" I think all/most of that is a hindsight bias. She would have obviously gotten some 'on the job' experience but her battlefield tactics were aggressive and generally simplistic. (European) Armies of the time were quite unwieldy and lumbersome; while conventional commanders were worried about supply lines, finances, contingencies in the case of defeat and loss of experienced troops -she would just proceed with the expectation of victory; after victory. Her speed and aggression (likely a product of her lack of a conventional military education and her religious mandate/zealotry) was highly disruptive to the standard of a relative slow and methodical build up to a pitched battle.

I honestly think Joan was a charismatic schizophrenic with religious themed grandiosity. She really was devout and believed fervently in her mission AND that it was divine. Her total conviction is likely a big part of what swayed so many in her favor. And it was what helped her to be so fearless, even things started going really wrong. I think she's a fantastic example of how powerful, capable, and influential neuro divergent people can be in the right environmental circumstances. I left the faith a long time ago, but I was raised Catholic, and when I had my confirmation, it was Joan's name I chose to honor - because I desired to live my life with her kind of courage. And I stand by that decision today. I am still her great admirer. You can have faith, without needing religion.

"Clearly, Joan's failure came from God punishing her arrogance, for what else could you call a woman expecting to be part of the truce negotiations and whatnot like she was a victorious general or something? Clearly it's not a sign that anything we did was wrong, or the natural result of attacking the best-fottified city in France with tactics designed for field fortifications." And thus Joan learned that being on a mission from God has its drawbacks. Failure is not just the result of a mistake or harsh odds, but of personal moral flaws.

You could say on of two thing happened, from a theological point of view. Either she completed her mission and should have gone back to her old life but she continued her campaign without God's blessing and was punished for it, or she had to be Martyred to close in the story, being recalled by God, so to speak, so her human flaws wouldn't mar the historical moment though her continued existence. Being halfway through my studies for my History degree; it feels kinda annoying that they always spin the narrative as History doesn't work like that, but I can understand why they do it for an interesting story. Still it can be very misleading for those who don't have the time to study History on their own.

At least we know from history that this story has a happy ending where Joan escapes, returns, marries the king, unifies France, kicks the English out, and lives out the rest of her days in peace and harmony, surrounded by children and grandchildren. ...that _is_ how it ends, right?

Wait the battle of Patay didn't go that way, it was the English who yelled at a deer and the french then notice their positions. And it's only the french vanguard (around 300 knights)who attacked he english positions, and Jeanne d'arc didn't participated in this battle because the french cavalry massacred the English troops before the intervention of the reinforcement in the rear.

That deer was a French spy. Also, worth mentionning : At her side during the Loire Campaign were a chivalrous duke of royal blood, an ancient sellsword nicknamed "god's wrath" (La Hire-Dieu), the Bastard of Orleans, and a guy later executed for killing hundreds of children. Would make for a great anime.

If God gives instructions. Do If God gives advice. Listen Most names we've heard of that may have had such influences, tried or were forced to stay in the front. But, if told something will happen, it should. Joan was not being told what to do. She should've sat and listened. Just because an Angel tells you that something is wrong or evil doesn't mean you are the one to do something about it. That is a presumption of something one cannot know. I would assume that others would have mostly disappeared from history. Or at least take a back seat as an advisor or guide. Now. I'm not sure how much I believe that God has taken a lg hand in things, mostly. I do believe in God, the Lord Jesus, and many other things. I am a proponent of Free Will... Though science is starting to shoot holes in that too... I have faith. I believe. I am far from religious. So, while I have an open mind on these subjects, and love the mental gymnastics needed to boil the ideas and dogma down to something useful. I have doubts about many things in history. And the further back, the more guess work with less clues. No one thought to even try to keep an unbiased record. We still fail at it now. Ok. Rant over. I've lined up all 80 of my HDs and we're going to the next video. I hope you all have a good one! And yes, leave your ideas. You aren't going to offend me. I'm Gen X, I can become upset and still be civil... Hell, if I don't get offended at least once a day. I feel cheated. 😂

7:37 Imagine what opportunity she spoiled by not administrating her tax-free hometown as new noble. She already had many skilled followers, but people at that time would had begged to be under the protection of a war hero and guided by the light of the prophet in a tax-free town. She could had built a village into a holy city, a bastion of France
