In Greece we are mostly taught about Hardrada as a famous member of the Byzantine emperor's Varangian guard, who later went on to become a Norse king. Learning that he was killed in Stanford bridge is strangely like being informed that an old friend has died. Kind of wanted him to have had a better ending.
Connor Briffa
Connor Briffa Ай бұрын
While it's natural to wish that historical figures could have had better endings, it's also important to recognize the realities of the time periods in which they lived. The Viking Age was marked by frequent conflict and violent clashes, and it's likely that Hardrada himself participated in many battles and suffered losses along the way.

When I used to do history in school, my school had a hill, so for one history lesson we got to go outside and recreate this scene, we got foam swords, and little foam arrows to throw up the hill, obviously the hill team won. I played the cavalry so I just got a little foam spear and just kept jabbing people with it on the hill.

Fun fact: 1:12 The son actually became infamous in history for one reason. Once, when he was battling some vikings, he noticed their ship had crashed and they couldn’t form proper battle lines, and so he decided to be honorable and not attack so that they could form battle lines and regain their strength, after they regained their strength, they said “Hey, thanks man!” and proceeded to slaughter the kings entire army. The end.

An interesting fact is that a few years after the big fight and the Norman conquest of England the pope ordered William to do something nice because of all the people that he had killed. So, in the town of battle, on the very hill that the big fight took place, William constructed battle abbey, a memorial to the big fight. At the top of the hill which the big fight was fought, there used to be an altar, but now a stone, marking the place that Harold oofed. The church and monastery no longer stand because of big Henry the six wives dissolution of the monasteries but the abbots quarter were turned into a country house and are now an extremely posh private school.

The fact that the pope ordered William to do something "nice" as a form of penance after the conquest of England is a testament to the severity of the violence that occurred during the conflict. The construction of Battle Abbey on the site of the battle is an interesting way of commemorating the event and the lives that were lost. The fact that a stone now marks the place where Harold fell is a poignant reminder of the human cost of the conflict. It's also interesting to note the fate of the church and monastery over time, and how they were impacted by historical events like the dissolution of the monasteries. The fact that the abbot's quarters were turned into a country house and are now a private school is a reflection of the changing fortunes and uses of historical buildings over time.

I recently bought "Age of Empires IV" and the battle of Hastings was included. It was narrated and even showed you, you are playing William, Duke of Normandy, step by step how to beat Godwinson's forces. I must have played that scenario a dozen times and always had my ass handed to me. It was embarrassing.

A cool story from the Battle of Stamford Bridge, and moment of historical badassery: Apparently, before the battle, a lone English rider approached the Norwegian host and found Harald Hardrada, who was accompanied by Tostig Godwinson. Tostig was Harold Godwinson's brother, but had been stripped of his titles and exiled, so joined Harald Hardrada to get some revenge and his land back. This lone rider spoke to them and offered Tostig his land back if he turned on Harald and sided with the English. Tostig asked what Harold Godwinson would offer Harald Hardrada for his trouble, and the rider responded "Six feet of ground, or as much more as he needs, as he is taller than most men." The rider then turned and left. Harald Hardrada, impressed by the boldness of this lone rider willing to stand before the entire Norwegian host and threaten their king, asked Tostig if he knew who he was - Tostig said yes, and that lone rider was none other than Harold Godwinson himself. The tale may be apocryphal; it's recorded in written accounts, but they were all written by people who lived long after the battle. If true though, damn; Harold Godwinson was himself every bit as badass as the great warriors he was arrayed against.
Connor Briffa

It's amazing to think that someone like Harold Godwinson could have been so fearless and determined, and that he may have been instrumental in turning the tide of the battle.

the epithet "unready" isn't derived from the modern word but its actually a pun the name Aethelred roughly translates to "well advised" and the old english word "Unraed" roughly translates to "poorly advised" So Aethelred the Unready basically means "Well Advised the Poorly Advised"

I just love the King of Norway 🇳🇴 “fight scenes”. It’s not only the perfect sword fighting sound effect/s, it’s those little additions, those little lines at the end of each sword ⚔️ that implies movement - and in this case manic sword fighting movement. So good. Man, it’s awesome. I’m so glad that you shared all of your hard work, thanks, much appreciated as always 🙂🐿 P.S in fact, all the sound work in this is awesome - you even added a little sound when putting the crown on Hardrada. And dude, you even gave William a little Norman hair “style”! So funny.

It's to do with how the Anglo-Saxon armies were formed. There were housecarls, who were the professional soldier retainers of the thegns, themselves noble soldier retainers of the king, but Harold's armies were mostly bulked out by the fyrd. These weren't unlike citizens doing mandatory military service for their local Shire, except they were expected to provide their own arms and provisions for a short skirmish, then go home to the fields, not wait around during harvest time past the period they were (maybe) being paid for.

You know most of the words in your sentence were added to English by the Normans, so without them your sentence would not make any sense in English.

Good old feigned retreat. Possibly the most clever of all tactics. Exploits the propensity of regiments to break rank to chase fleeing enemies by suddenly forming up and cutting the chasers to pieces. Requires a lot of coordination and discipline.

St. Edward the Confessor took a vow of chastity early in his life, and thus he only married to please his constituents and so long as the woman agreed that they would practically live as siblings. The only war he was involved in was to help put down a rebellion that tried to unlawfully depose another king. Ora pro nobis!

Great video. My family is British. We are related to the Royal Family way back when. My family came over from France with William the Conquerer. When I did the ancestry testing, it said that I had some French blood in me. I wondered if it came from this branch in my familyd. Or I couldn't follow all of my ancestors back very far. The French could have come from one of them.
