I read it was because her father was so upset about her going to live in sin with her then boyfriend/ partner that he said he would disown her. So she never had a real relationship because she wouldn't live with any men before marriage so it never happened for her! 🥲🥲🥲

Sims was diagnosed with diverticular disease in 1997 and she was admitted to hospital in November 2000, and complications of a routine operation caused her to slip into a coma. Her lifelong friend and stand-in Norah Holland spoke of the doctors' amazement at her strength and courage throughout her final illness.

I read her autobiography years ago and it made me so sad because for a woman who gave so much pleasure and laughter to so many people, she seemed to have had a quite wretched and lonely life. I can recall that towards the end of the book she says something along the lines of "Who would have thought that i would find myself at this stage in my life, on my own with no family to speak of and living in a rented flat?" So sad.

What an incredible lady, really good that she spoke about her alcoholism openly as it would have helped many others battling alcoholism to know they weren't alone. Very strong lady and resilient. It's not a bad thing to talk about such topics as it's not always good to be stoic about it.

Joan Sims was for me one of the best Carry On actors to watch growing up. I used to love reciting her parts. Was so sad when I found out she died, R.I.P Joan. What is getting to me is the fact that with the Carry On stars is so many talented actors that not only is it shocking of how underrated they became, especially after the films finished, but hearing about how so many of them had lived through such struggles BC many of us just assume that if you live in showbiz then your life is awesome and yet for so many that is never the case. Thanks for posting this video. It was so heartwarming to see 😇👏

She had guts as well as talent. Thanks to her skillfully and superbly rendered characterisations, she now occupies a small niche in the place that is the popular national consciousness of the last half century, and, I might add, within a tradition of such characterisations that goes back far longer in theatrical history, as far back as Chaucer. God bless her. Thanks for all the great laughs Joan..!

Carry on Don't Lose Your Head is by far my favourite Carry On and it's because of Joan as Countess Desiree. She's so refined in her opening scene until she asks Peter Butterworth: "What are you gawping at?" and she's hilarious throughout. "Oh, not that old thing. It's got false teeth in it".

7:34 - 10:07 This is really powerful and almost mesmerising in its pure honesty. Alice Beer's follow-up question feels like a ham-fisted, contrived and slightly inappropriate response to the way Joan Sims had just opened up to her.
