How absolutely magnificent!! I thought I had seen everything there was available to see of La Stupenda, but it's so good to have this recorded document from her early prime. She is in stunning form, with matchless precision, tonal weight and command of coloratura. I hope there will be more discoveries from the Ed Sullivan Show archives!

This telecast was one week after her Met debut on Sunday Nov. 26, 1961. I notice that in many of Miss Sutherland's early videos she tilts her head back as she sings. She did not do that later.

No other soprano had such an obvious limpid quality on the high D...not like Sutherland did. The effortless delivery @3:36 on the D is a good example of this.

I've said it before & I'll say it again: I cannot understand a word she is singing. But guess what? I doesn't matter. To hear the greatest Italian opera divas of all time on the Ed Sullivan Show in this era is breathtaking, stunning and wonderful to my human ears. The power, range, perfect pitch and vibrato is God's Gift to us mere mortals thru Joan Sutherland, Anna Moffo, et al. Thank you Lord, Amen.

But you have completely and totally missed the point I was trying to make: It doesn't matter to me because the actual sounds, tones, notes and total performance touch me. And I don't appreciate your condensing critical suggestion either.
