If this is one of the performances from 1986, Sutherland was sixty. To still have that flexibility in her voice and sustain that final high note at an age when most singers have retired is astounding.

I attended one of those 1986 performances! When Dame Joan made her first appearance with Sam Ramey, the audience went so wild that she had to leave the stage, come back and start over again! We all thought, for sure, she would transpose or simplify this fusillade of coloratura at the end - but as you can hear, she smiled and blew the roof off the theater!

Quite something to be singing this brilliantly at 60. I heard her last 1985 Lucias at Covent Garden and sh was phenomenal vocally as well as histrionically. We shall not see her like again!

You were and still are the voice of the Gods, my invitation to opera from when I was 16 years old. Thank you for your excellent talent and amazing longevity and love you always seemed to have, such a natural personality and down to earth person, You and Richard were a match made heaven. Thank you for sharing it with us for all those years.

I belong to an opera forum I enjoy, but they are all Callas, Callas, Callas and show no love for Joan. It warms my heart to realize I am not the only opera goer who worshipped at her altar. I admire Callas, but I enjoy Sutherland more as her voice was so much more beautiful and unlike Callas lasted and lasted and lasted. This performance is amazing!!!!!!! I also have been crazy about her since I was a teen in 1970

The original MET production of I PURITANI debuted in 1975 (with Pavarotti, Milner and James Morris). It was revived for the first time in 1986 and this could be from one of those performances. I remember hearing both the ‘75 and ‘86 radio performances and yes, the one in ‘75 was, as you expect better. She was incandescent. However when listening to this, someone in the audience yells out “Dame Joan” which she wasn’t in’75 so this is the ‘86 revival honoring the 25th anniversary of her MET debut. She would do a new production of IL TROVATORE in ‘87 as her final MET performances. As always she gave the MET better than they gave her.

You know in years of listening to her that was the only note I ever heard her sing off key. That is very forgivable!!!!!!!!! I love Tebaldi and Marton, but the same could not be said about them!!

I hear it. But no big deal, every singer makes mistakes sometimes, and she was fantastic at what she did.
