MY RECAP OF THIS: ANDREA MOTIS “Moody’s Mood For Love” (2013), accompanied by the great Tenorist, SCOTT HAMILTON. This is one of the most amazing (and complex) of jazz tunes. It all started with the great ole’ standard, “I’m In The Mood For Love”. In 1949, alto saxist James Moody recorded a marvelously creative interpretation of it in Sweden. It sits on top of the original melody, same chord changes. So great that in 1952, singer Eddie Jefferson put words (very complex ones!) to Moody’s solo (a “VOCALESE”), and named it, “Moody’s Mood For Love” - to be sung by great jazz singers ever since (those capable of even trying it). This Andrea Motis + Scott Hamilton take was recorded live in 2013 at The Jamboree Jazz Club in Barcelona by the Andrea/Joan Chamorro Quintet. Andrea was amazingly only 17 years old at the time (b. 9May1995; turned 18 one month later). SCOTT starts off improvising on “I’m In The Mood...” in a traditional manner, and then ANDREA sings “Moody’s Mood” beautifully, charmingly, and perfectly. “Oh Baby, you make me feel so good!!” (@4:43) It’s just hard to believe the musical powers this young star possesses. Try singing this along with her - I will post the lyrics below. And, of course, do it right off the top of your head, and don’t miss a note. Oh, and of course, do it in NOT your native language, Barcelona’s “Catalan” haha = = = = = = = = = Lyrics: “Moody’s Mood For Love” There I go, there I go, there I go, there I go Pretty baby you are the soul that snaps my control It's a funny thing but every time I'm near you I never can behave You give me a smile and I'm wrapped up in your magic Music all around me, crazy music, music that keeps calling me so Baby close to you, turns me into your slave Come on Come and do with me any little thing that you want to Anything, baby just let me get next to you Am I insane or do I really see heaven in your eyes Bright as stars that shine up above you In the clear blue sky How I worry bout you Just can't live my life without you Baby come here, don't have no fear Oh, is there wonder why I'm really feeling in the mood for love So tell me why, stop to think about this weather, my dear This little dream might fade away There I go talking out of my head again so baby won't you Come and put our two hearts together That would make me strong and brave Oh, when we are one, I'm not afraid, I'm not afraid If there's a cloud up above us Go on and let in rain I'm sure our love together would endure a hurricane Oh my baby Won't you please let me love you and get a release from this awful misery What is all this talk about loving me, my sweet I am not afraid, not anymore, not like before Don't you understand me, oh baby please Pull yourself together, got to do it very soon My heart's on fire, come on and take I'll be what you make me, my darling Oh, pretty baby, you make me feel so good Let me take you by the hand Come let us visit out there In that new promised land Maybe there we can find A good place to keep a lovin' state of mind I'm so crazy mama Never knew what love was all about James Moody would you come on hit me, you can blow now if you want to, we're through. *END*

Agree totally on the history of this great standard, but Andrea was still 17 not 19 when she recorded this version at the Jamboree Jazz club in Barcelona . Which makes it all the more amazing that an adolescent of her age could master the very complex lyrics, her phrasing is immaculate. This was one of the first videos in which I saw her perform and I became an instant fan and have been ever since. I have had the good luck to see her perform in Paris, Barcelona and elsewhere and have had many conversations. She isa lovely person, modest, no big star complex about her, has a sense of humour and Avery good memory concerning people.

One of my ultimate favorite tunes performed that hits me in the heart. Scott's intro is so good/ romantic as if you're singing to your sweetheart. Andrea's vocal, perfect, I smile at the beauty of her singing. Joan you have a great treasure in the musicians you accept into your band. When Andrrea hits those high notes, it knocks me out of my chair.

This whole performance is a masterpiece. There are so many things about it that are just perfect. Scott Hamilton's sax is so, soul, soulful. I love Andrea's voice transformation in "and the girl says. What is all this talk about loving me.." She reaches some amazing high notes. It blew me away as it did the audience as well. I could listen to this piece a hundred times and not tire of it.

This is such a fantastic piece of storytelling, and like the best stories, a story of being in Love. Its like a Pocket Opera (a good translation would render this as portable, one that you can carry with you). The characters are drawn so deftly here by Andrea, the man a little gruff, heavy, tentative , the woman, sweet, light, and wonder of wonders, enthusiastic. The Good Professor's lead singers, in that decade going forward, besides being superb musicians, became great storytellers, with real emotional engagement , hitting heights like this.

I've been listening to jazz for over 40 years, and I've heard this done by some of the greats, but Andrea's singing on this number is perhaps the most breathtaking live jazz vocal performance I've ever heard. And she was only about 19 years old at the time (and English is not her first language). Absolutely stunning! After singing such an amazing, sophisticated vocal way beyond her years, and ends with..."Scott Hamilton, you can come in now, and you can blow now when you want to, I'm through..." -- you have to scrape me off the floor. You can tell by the crowd reaction, the other musicians, and Andrea herself that they all knew that was a very special moment.
