A master performance. After seeing him in performance with Freddy Cole, I approached him as he was seated alone in the back of club. I kindly asked him for his signature and expressed my gratitude for sharing his art with us tonight. He invited me sit him as I presented a CD cover of his old solo album Moody's Mood of Love. He smiled and looked at me for moment and thoughfully signed it. It took him several minutes to finish. Smiling he returned it. The signature was a work of art that included glasses with eyes behind them using the two Os of his last name. I have collected over 30 jazz signatures over the years but none as thoughtful, kind, and generous as James Moody. He deserves more attention and celebration from jazz critics, media, and fans. Blessings and praise for James Moody.

Great story. I've interviewed Dave Brubeck, Les Paul, Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea and others over years. However, my interview with James Moody is my all-time favorite! He was about as candid as one could be. I've played it numerous times over the years. 🎙Host of Artistry in Jazz since 1982 Jazz90.1FM WGMC in Rochester, New York

@@tompethic887 I went to RIT and lived in Rochester from 1993-97. I listened to your radio show often while making art. Wonderful program and I miss it. Many wonderful shows in Rochester including Joe Henderson, Ohio Players for free in the park, Stanley Turentine, Duke Big Band with Mercer Ellington, James Cotton, and many others. Rochester jazz Festival looks great but moved for a job to enjoy it. Great record stores back then as well.

@@andrewdenney5436 Wow Andrew! What a wonderful message to me! Especially the fact that you listened to Artistry in Jazz while creating your own art! I think the majority of listeners don't let the jazz host know that they enjoy the program. However, it does say something, when they call in a pledge during the show! Not sure where you call home these days, but you can listen to my show online Saturdays from 4-7 PM ET at Jazz901.org WGMC. I totally appreciate your kind words and certainly don't take them for granted! Thanks again Andrew... Tom Pethic 🎙Host of Artistry in Jazz on WGMC since 1982. Rochester, New York

@@tompethic887 I will check it out. I enjoyed my years in Rochester except not seeing the sun for months and snow in April. I live in St Louis now. Your show was cool man...hip! You are great story teller and your enthusiasm for jazz was always felt. I think at one point...you aired a radio documentary of John Coltrane which was played over several weeks. Tuned in for the whole thing. I think it was show. Forgive this old man. I had another Rochester story. I'm going to assume you like Reggae music. One winter night the Legendary Reggae Band Culture with Joseph Hill came into Rochester during a winter storm. I remember running through stop signs and multiple red lights on empty streets in Rochester winter wonderland to go. Got there in one piece. Culture gave Jah Love to a big crowd that risked their lives for great music. I miss that Rochester survival mode. Big thanks for keeping jazz alive in Rochester!

@@andrewdenney5436 l should have you be my manager! Although, one doesn't need one in non-profit radio. I do like telling stories. That's for sure. Glad someone enjoyed hearing them. I don't believe that was me that did a Trane documentary. St. Louis is a beautiful city. I was there about 53 years ago, when my father's barbershop chorus, The Chorus of The Genesee, was competing in a national competition. Have a day Andrew! 🎙Tom Pethic

Could not agree more, Andrew Denney. Never met or saw James Moody perform- before this video- but I have a CD he released in the 80's with a great trio and he did a "revisited" version of Moody's Mood for Love. I listened to that CD non-stop for a month and was overwhelmed by the warmth and power of the music. I've been a huge fan ever since and watching this video makes me even more grateful for James Moody as an artist and as a human being. What a performance. What a blessing that it was captured for the world at large to see.

Me too Qamar; When I hear Moody sing it and Patty Austin does the female response; The tune is like me and every wonderful woman I've ever loved. My current lady for 27 years is stuck on the Beatles; most of the people I've known didn't know what they loved hearing, they just went with the flow.I love playing 8ths and 13ths, augmented and dimenished anything in between and resolving chords that make everything fit. I still have hope that within my ability to play, the general publics taste will change away from what I calll todays caveman music. Dexter Gordon, loved and played the changes, and I loved playing the changes; me with beautiful piano chords which inspired brilliant solos from the people I once knew. I'm around 37 years younger than most of the people I loved playing with, and they would inspire my solos.

I grew up in Washington, DC in the 70's. My first time hearing this song was the Quincy Jones version and I loved it from that moment on. Then Chuck Brown did a Go-Go version and I was caught up. Then as I started getting more into music as a teenager, I found out that Moody was an actual person and I had to search for his original version (Didn't have KZbin and internet back then). When I heard him sing it, the emotion and connection was unmistakably obvious. I have since heard no less than 15 versions of the song and that's a testimony of how great and beautiful the song truly is. Bravo!!
