I took up harp at 26, and I've been playing for 6 year and have worked in a harp factory for the past year. I wouldn't have ever even known about the instrument until I fell in love with her music. I just hope I can tell her one day how she changed my life.

That is actually wonderful and amazing. Oh Hoy. Literal Joy ! That is what a Muse does , inspires people, becomes a vessel for Divine Inspiration . Joanna is so special because she not only creates incredible artistry, but inspires others to not only create art themselves , which is amazing enough, but to actually educate themselves on the instruments to the point of creating the actual instrument along with creating the music made on it !! Now THAT is POWER!! She is amazing for putting all that power and creative force out there, and you are amazing for picking up that power and adding it to your own to such a degree that all of this creative force is unleashed unto the world , which, let's face it, needs all the beauty and divinity it can get right now. Amen !!! Blessed be.

Some of the best songwriters in modern history have the most controversial voices. I personally think Joanna's voice is special and unique, it matches the style of her music perfectly. And even if I didn't love it, her lyrics are powerful and move me to feel deep emotions when I read them. It's beautify poetry.

People not liking her voice confuses me because to me it sounds like two things that fit her poetic music perfectly: the three fates, and crows. Like she manages to sound of all ages at the sametime, youthful, old, maid. Its really cool. It has the husky jazz undertones with a headvoice chior spin.

First let me say I was born and raised in the same small town as Joanna and though shes a little younger than me and I didnt really know her I have a lot of friends that do. That said many people I know dont like her voice, I cant either its like nails on a chalkboard to me. In certain keys she actually does pretty good but I think for me its the fact she tries to mix in multiple different styles at once that bothers me. Also the tempo of her singing never sounds musical or connected to the music itself, more like talking with the music in the background. That said she is an awesome musician and impressively accomplished in the area, I would totally listen to instrumentals by her. I actually came here to try again to find something I like about her music.

My reaction to her voice is different from what anyone else here describes. I am an ardent feminist with fragile nerves. From all I can tell, I admire her musical artistry and the instrumentation very much. But in every song I try, my fragile nerves simply cannot bear the sound of her voice. If that makes me bad or pathetic, that's what I am.

The diver is my love And I am his, if I am not deceived Who takes one breath above for every hour below the sea Who gave to me a jewel Worth twice this woman's life, though it cost her less Than laying at low tide to see her true love phosphoresce And in an infinite regress Tell me why is the pain of birth Lighter borne than the pain of death? I can't claim that I loved you first But I loved you best I know we must abide Each by the rules that bind us here: The divers and the sailors and the women on the pier And how do you choose your form? How do you choose your name? How do you choose your life? How do you choose the time you must exhale and kick and rise? And in an infinite capsize Like a boat tearing down the coast Double hulls bearing double masts I don’t know if you loved me most But you loved me last Recall the word you gave To count your way across the depths of this arid world Where you will yoke the waves that lay a bed of shining pearls I dream it every night The ringing of the pail, the motes of sand dislodged, the shucking, quick and bright The twinned and cast off shells reveal a single heart of white And in an infinite backslide Ancient boulders sink past the west Like a sword at the bearer's fall I can't claim that I knew you best But did you know me at all? A woman is alive, a woman is alive You do not take her for a siren An anchor on a stone, alone, unfaceted and fine And never will I wed I'll hunt the pearl of death to the bottom of my life And ever hold my breath 'til I may be the diver's wife See how the infinite divides And the divers are not to blame For the rift spanning distant shores You don’t know my name But I know yours

Divers, are those who sleep and sink into cosmic rest each night. Forgetful, quick to react, slow to action. Repressed, depressed to limited state. they Lets the world continue its self destruction, ignoring love for lavish incentive, delusional, dwells on the surface of matters. Learns avoiding Underground, underworld, underwater, and understanding... And then there are the immortals, always awake, held prisoner every night in "terrible dreams worlds" Inside a strangely familiar body, physically looks and works just the same. The dreamworld is populated with those they know, while others are here for a show, time there goes slow, as those bound will know Each story song, joanna, most times unwilling participant, some times involved, Waking up to regret, shame, resentment, apologize, and calm the bewilderment of the "dream"

What have you taken from me? Are you the honey that rebukes my stinging tongue? Each song of light unburdens my heaviest hand My sword dropped into the dusk of time And pulled again from the dawn of your rosying space As from the frozen rock, Now bent to ploughshare, With which we till the valleys between us. With these two horns, one bent, one straight, I have fallen into some rush upon you again The blush of skin like slowing light And I turn my course Fearful now to trample the road between us I speed back into the blue lights of my night's sky Ashamed and enraged Yet from behind I hear your voice that calls ever after me And that ocean pours upon my blistered back Cooling the wounds we have made That heals the venom of love's sting That sweetness from the sorrow brings.

+Ffion Atkinson I've seen her in concert 3 times and cried the entire performance every time. It really hurt me that she didn't come to my city on the tour for this album. It actually caused me physical distress. I hope she comes again soon, this is the greatest album (I think) that has ever been recorded.

Even though Paul Thomas Anderson directed this, nothing does Joanna justice until you see her in concert and wonder at her ability to remember lyrics song after song... and music that does not follow the usual A B A B C format. She is indeed a genius. 💖

Notwithstanding the originality of it, this way of singing with its inflections and the manner in wich the piano mainly supports it reminds me so much of Nina Simone. In a good way. Not just a by-product, more related than derived from, some form of kinship. If you listen to it again, I think you will notice. Not just dropping names but early Joni Mitchell comes to mind also. Her song Woodstock in solo with just piano accompaniment. Flashes of Kate Bush with a looser, less closely knit or structured approach. All in all good references and some pretty solid stuff here. And thank you for the refreshments.

Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and in turn Joanna are all influenced by the Bronx genius Laura Nyro. For example, Nyro's 'Captain for Dark Mornings' (1969), which is the likely inspiration for 'Wuthering Heights'. Nyro is probably the most influential pop songwriter of the last 50 years (see youtube Nyro discussions by Todd Rundgren, Elton John, Alice Cooper, Sara Bareilles). Nyro is Rock Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame. Some of Nyro's influences were Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and Miles Davis. Nyro's urban New York music is also popular with rap artists - even Kanye has sampled her. Nyro wrote the iconic 'Wedding Bell Blues' and 'And When I Die' aged 16.

The diver is my love (and I am his, if I am not deceived), who takes one breath above, for every hour below the sea; who gave to me a jewel worth twice this woman's life (but would cost her less than laying at low tide, to see her true love phosphoresce). And in an infinite regress: Tell me, why is the pain of birth lighter borne than the pain of death? I ain't saying that I loved you first, but I loved you best. I know we must abide each by the rules that bind us here: the divers, and the sailors, and the women on the pier. But how do you choose your form? How do you choose your name? How do you choose your life? How do you choose the time you must exhale, and kick, and rise? And in an infinite capsize: Like a bull tearing down the coast, double hulls bearing double masts- I don't know if you loved me most, but you loved me last. Recall the word you gave: to count your way across the depths of this arid world, where you would yoke the waves, and lay a bed of shining pearls! I dream it every night: the ringing of the pail, the motes of sand dislodged, the shucking, quick and bright; the twinned and cast-off shells reveal a single heart of white. And in an infinite backslide: Ancient border, sink past the West, like a sword at the bearer's fall. I can't claim that I knew you best, but did you know me at all? A woman is alive! A woman is alive; you do not take her for a sign in nacre on a stone, alone, unfaceted and fine. And never will I wed. I'll hunt the pearl of death to the bottom of my life, and ever hold my breath, till I may be the diver's wife. See how the infinite divides: and the divers are not to blame for the rift, spanning distant shores. You don't know my name, but I know yours.

+Izadora Xavier you do not take her for a sign in nacre on a stone do you think this is an allusion to the birth of venus? I hadn't considered it before... but it makes a sort of sense. Neoplatonists would say we look upon venus' beauty as a sign to contemplate transcendental beauty, Newsom refutes that, saying that "beauty" of theirs is a coating, an unfaceted shell that actually prohibits us from seeing the multifaceted, transcendental beauty within. I'm sure that's all nonsense to you, and anyone else reading it, but I feel working through it a bit and typing it out has been improving, so, I guess what I'm saying is, sorry I'm selfish.
@izadora4603
@izadora4603 8 жыл бұрын
it's not nonsense, but I see it differently. Because she's painting this picture in the song, right, of a woman standing on a pier watching men go out to sea, and there's this man v. nature thing and the woman is just a bystander. She talks about how these positions are fixed (I know we must abide each by the rules that bind us here: the divers, and the sailors, and the women on the pier). But then she undoes it and does this mainly by seeing the picture through the woman's eyes, who is not waiting for the men to return and is longing for nature herself. So this traditional picture of men doing things and going places and taming forces of nature to be rewarded and encouraged by the idea of femininity and domesticity and beauty that passively waits for them is subverted. A women is alive, you do not take her for a sign. She is on the pier reflecting on why is she there, longing for being one with nature etc etc. This is a great song, my reading is maybe to personal, but that's how I see ti.
