sparkfirehot Math Antics is the best for Math! I been out for 21 years and I passed all 3 but math yet. Tomorrow I take my math. The test are no as bad as it seems. The stuff you study isn’t even on the the test so just review it all and work on what you don’t understand! What helped was taking the practice test. It tells you if you you will pass and if you won’t. Take what you can improve on from the test and work on that instead.

Love this video. Thank you so much! And you gave me a great insight: Slow layering sounds awesome. It doesn't work for me that way. Immersion works for me. And if i hit a wall then 'layer'(?) by coming back later. But layering like that over the years *only* gives me time to forget details. However if i grasp the overarching end concepts by learning a lot more (immersion). Then even when i forget the details years later i can still pick it up with refresher courses. Versus forgetting the details and having to re-learn everything because i don't have a greater over-arching understanding of what these 'little parts', the details, even go to, what they mean, or why i should remember them. I probably failed at capturing why/how that layering over the years doesn't work for me🤷♀️😅. But it doesn't. But I have NVLD and adhd. Maybe that's why 😄🤓🤷♀️ idk

Well, people are impatient. They think they can study for a couple of months and pass, when they've missed so many lessons. Also, 10 to 15 years ago, the test was easier. Now they must understand factoring polynomials, quadratic equations, and formulas. Before, there were just a few of those problems that many test takers usually skipped. It takes grit and determination. It's actually easier to just stay in high school to get a diploma. :-/

Also, one of my favorite Einstein quotes is: If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its entire life believing it's stupid. I passed the GED in 1978 or so (i'm old!), it was way easier back then! In 1976 in Illinois, a student needed only 1 year of math as Algebra 1 to graduate. In the 1990s, 2 years were required as Alg 1 and Geometry. Now 3 years are required as Alg 1, Geometry, and Alg 2. The USA is losing the battle with Math. In the past 12 years our scores have dropped compared to other countries. It's common for high schoolers to take Calculus outside the USA. Hopefully my channel can help. I try to explain as much as possible and link previous lessons so no one gets too lost. If you were referring to yourself, I'm on Facebook and can be messaged, Twitter and you can Direct Message me with lesson difficulties (or even privately send a pic of a tough problem). XXXOOO

@@JoAnnsSchoolThe reason why it is so difficult is that they added common core standards in 2014-2015. I have heard of people with degrees that could not pass the exams.
@JoAnnsSchool2 жыл бұрын
@@paulcoy5201 , having a degree doesn't necessarily reflect ability. There's an old saying, a medical student who graduates at the bottom half of his class will still be a doctor. You need to understand and break down the words "Common Core". "Common" meaning alike, "core" meaning basic. Common Core is an equal basic education that is the same level for all children across the USA. Prior to Common Core, the student going to the ''better'' school learned lessons utilizing higher order thinking skills, and the student going to the ''lesser'' school did not. By the time they both graduated, the student going to the ''better'' school had an advantage over the other student. Common Core was meant to take that away. It's a national standard that puts all children on a Level Playing Field. It doesn't matter what neighborhood you come from. When you complete 5th grade you should know these things, when you graduate 8th grade you should know these things, etc. Common Core didn't affect the private Academies, wealthy prep schools, because they were already teaching higher order thinking skills. The shock is to some of the middle-income, and all of the lower-income neighborhoods because they're not used to students being taught these concepts. Many teachers do not know how to teach Common Core. Some teachers are lazy and give students ''packets'' to do on their own, without actually teaching. Teachers should explain to students and parents that Common Core shows there are other ways to solve the same problem. Yes, there is a regular algorithm (old way) to solve the problem, but there are other ways that utilize thinking outside of the box. The regular algorithm should be learned with the other ways as a quick side lesson. Too many teachers are putting too much emphasis on the other ways. So, I guess I'm blaming the teacher's for not knowing how to teach and their higher-ups for not making sure they have qualified teachers. Currently according to the Pew Research Center, the United States is #37 worldwide in MATH. There are second world countries that don't have our wealth and opportunities whose students are out performing USA students. Some of these 2nd world countries require Calculus to graduate high school. The USA was #45 in math a few years ago, and now we've climbed up to #37. I'm concerned that the covid lockdowns have made us slip back. PISA World Ranking for Math 2018 factsmaps.com/pisa-worldwide-ranking-average-score-of-math-science-reading/

@JoAnnsSchool2 жыл бұрын
I believe in grit and determination. But, you probably don't ''need'' to study this. A 73 y.o. doesn't need a diploma. There are people all over the world who have been successful without diplomas and degrees, some are even millionaires. If a person wants something enough, they'll find a way to get it. Common Core was NOT made ''in a back room'' as you stated before. It was designed over years by educators who were concerned about the USA's failure to keep up with Asia. Up until covid, we WERE increasing our level in Math, and it was from the use of Common Core. But, if there's a great invention and most of the people have no clue how to teach it or use it, it's worthless. There are many incompetent teachers. I blame them and the teaching schools that didn't train them properly. Teachers can take an elective course in college called "Math for Elementary Education", but few bother to take it. Just because a person knows how to do something doesn't mean they'll know how to teach it effectively. Back in the 1940s when my father was in high school, he only needed general math to graduate. That's equal to our current 5th grade math level. Then, in the 70s when I was in high school, my father was furious that I was expected to learn math that contained "letters of the alphabet" (variables) for Algebra 1 to graduate. He actually stormed into my school yelling at the teachers. I was so embarrassed. Now, students must pass Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 to graduate, and it may be necessary to pass Trigonometry or Calculus to be competitive in the tech and science job markets. Does that mean ALL students will need it. No. The person making handcrafted saddles won't need it. The person sewing wedding dresses won't need it. Both can make a good living if they do quality work. Math teaches Logic, problem solving, and higher-order thinking skills. I tell my non-tech students that even if they never use Algebra, at least they're exercising their brain and learning how to problem solve. Have a blessed day!
@paulcoy52012 жыл бұрын
@@JoAnnsSchool No, I do not need it, or necessarily care if I pass or not. I will never like common core, it is destructive. A while back, I met some kids in elementary school none of them could write, or tell time on a wall clock, but they sure knew about those exams. All that is taught now, is math, science, and reading, nothing else. Have you read any of the complaints on the GED? There are a bunch, from parents, teachers, even politicians are aganist it. Just keep in mind that "formal school" and "learning interesting new things" are two different things. Historically, students were usually taught one-on-one. It's only been about 150 years that they have been put into classrooms. It's actually kind of silly to think that everyone of a particular age will learn at the same pace. Many of the most intelligent and gifted people hated school. So, you're in good company. Just keep learning! :-)
