Letterman was and still is a fucking genius. He was around Andy Kaufmann and the like and sensed something was fake, because Joaquin's performance on the interview was not as perfect and brilliant as people give it credit, and he played along. He ad libbed his jokes to Joaquin. He made the interview weird and made Joaquin look weird. Joaquin really didn't do much! Letterman made that iconic. Then Joaquin comes back and he busts his balls for the entire interview because he knew he was gonna ket them use the footage without cost. I watched this interview when it was on the air and knew that it was staged or something because Dave was acting like something was staged. I watched Letterman for almost 30 years. Notice how he reacts to the praise of Letterman and the audience clapping? Unimpressed by his own status. He doesn't let things like praise get under his skin because he knows what's important and he knows how to nourish his soul. With the right things. He sees through things. This is what I call a man. A complete man. He's my favorite actor in Hollywood.

I remember being obsessed with this when it happened and more than ten years later it's still such a fun watch. Letterman was the perfect host for this. If Joaquin had gone on Leno, he would have been too timid to take any jabs at him, but this was right up Dave's alley. I think he was being facetious with the legal threats but the comments definitely got Phoenix off guard a bit.

+Mick Funny . . . And? Let's put aside for the moment that River Phoenix is dead, and therefore, incapable of being "proud" of anything, since a necessary (although not sufficient) prerequisite for being proud is, well, *being* in the first place. With that out of the way, my older siblings don't have *any* films, let alone any *good* ones. They're not even actors! Does that mean they're *not* proud of me? Does that mean they're not *capable* of being proud of me? Does that mean they're not *entitled* to be proud of me? Does that mean their pride is *worthless? Undeserved? Artificial?* Your comment doesn't make any sense.

Mick Funny Believe me, River accomplished more in his life than you ever will. And when you're dead, love, your memory won't resonate with people around the world like his has. Funny how you have the nerve to call out someone so loved like River. By the way, how many of River's films have you seen? Have you seen Running on Empty? Probably not, because you're the type of person who's uneducated enough to make comments with no credence whatsoever. Until you see almost ALL of River's films, don't go throwing out insults at him. Believe me, I'll be defending him until I take my last breath.

I think if Joaquin was upfront originally and talked to Dave to do the interview in character then Dave would have played along. People go on these shows to promote things, obviously. But when you put the host in that kind of spot by acting like that and not saying anything about it beforehand is rude. Then for Joaquin to basically say he thought Dave would have been smart enough to figure out what he was doing...That's when Dave really didn't let it go. First Joaquin makes a fool of his appearance then a year and a half later insults the host...yeah, I think I'd be kinda fuck you-ish if I were Dave.
@Jorozco37085 жыл бұрын
@@SpideyScott72 I dont think that what the person was talking about at all but to respond to that point of view, If Joaquin would have just told Dave what was going to happen then he wouldn't get a genuine reaction from David and the interview would have gone differently and people would probably be able to make out that it was just a character so it would kinds ruin everything really and it was great promotion cause everyone wanted to see wtf was going on and plus millions of people watched that interview over and over again so it's a win win
@SpideyScott725 жыл бұрын
@@Jorozco3708 I'm pretty sure Dave had been in the biz long enough to know how to play along. If you invite me to a party and I act like a dick, odds are as the party host you'll be slightly embarrassed and probably pissed. If I told you ahead of time I'm going to be a dick to see what people's reaction will be, you can either choose to say sure let's see where it goes, or no that's not what I want at my party. It shows you respect as the host rather than putting you in an awkward position. That said, I do think on the first point it's what the poster meant so we clearly have differing views which is perfectly fine.
