I think there's another "Jesus Moment" in the book of Job, and it's in Job 9:33 when he said, "If only there were a mediator between us, someone who could bring us together." In 1 Timothy 2:5 , "For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity--the man Christ Jesus" Thank you so much for making these videos 😊 God bless you Pastor Landon!

A month ago I read a book called "Job: Man of Sorrows" (I got it through Amazon). The author puts his finger on the sore spot in a way that I have never seen or heard of anywhere else. I wholeheartedly recommend it to those of you heavily interested in Job, or either "weary", "tired", "quarantined" or "under pain". You will never read anything similar to that anywhere.

I love the Job Perspective. Now when I face things I can’t understand, aren’t fair, doesn’t make any sense, not in line with what I believe God’s will and plan for my life...I take the Job Perspective. God I don’t understand this..it’s not fair but I choose to believe you are proud of me...help me walk in this situation in a way that honours and glorifies you...in the peace of knowing I am in your dominion and provident will right now

I find it interesting that when people speak about the book of Job and try to explain it, they don't really touch on the fact that God made a bet with Satan at the expense of Job. God is all knowing correct? So when Satan says that the only reason Job loves him and worships him so dearly is because of the good life he has and all his possessions, an all knowing god would already know that that is incorrect and that if Job went through this suffering he wouldn't lose faith. He shouldn't feel the need to go through with the bet allowing Satan to ruin his life and cause him suffering, as he already knows the answer. Then, on top of all the suffering Job goes through, God comes down not to come clean on the real reason why Job suffered, but to tell him not to question it because Job isn't as powerful as him and they don't have the right to determin why bad things happen, yet in reality it's cause God was, lack for a better word, insecure about what Satan said to him. I'm sorry but this story doesn't answer the question "Why do bad things happen?". It only leaves you with more questions such as "Why does God allow good people to suffer for bad reasons?". "Just because and you are not as mighty as me therefore you cannot question me" is not a suffecient answer when talking about a god who is supposedly "All loving". God knew the outcome before allowing Satan to make Job suffer. Unfortunatly, the only thing I can learn from this story is that, if God truly existed and allowed this to happen then he can't be an all loving god. I'm open to hearing your reasoning on this, because I find it extremely hard to learn any good from this.
@landonbiblestudy

Hey Craig This I think is really THE question of the book - ur on the right track in my mind in terms of how difficult it is. At the end of the book God says basically - I am God, can anyone question me ? Do we have enough faith to believe that God is doing things and well when we don't understand them or they hurt or they are difficult or confusing ? That to me is the question of the book - Job was. What do you think about that idea ?
@CraigWalkerNZ
@CraigWalkerNZ 3 жыл бұрын
@@landonbiblestudy I understand what you mean when you say "Do we have enough faith...". I feel like that question would work if we never truly knew the reasons behind why he allows bad things to happen, and therefore we should have faith that there's a good reason he's doing it, however, I think the book of Job truly harms that question and thought. How can God expect us to have faith that the bad things he lets happen, happens for a good reason, when in this story he allowed Satan to destroy the life of Job who dedicated his life to God, and was caught in the middle of a bet, and on top of that tell him that he isn't as powerful as God so he shouldn't question him, instead of coming clean and telling him the truth. God gave us a brain with the capabilities of questioning him, and then gets upset if we question him. We don't need to be powerful gods to question him when he does things to his creations that are so clearly not right. Also I'd just like to say I know my arguments go against what you believe in and therefore may come across as disrespectful, that is not my intent. I just like having these discussions with people to see if theres maybe something I missed :)

As abiding Christians when we encounter suffering in our own life could we be experiencing a Job moment or would taking authority in resisting the devil be the solution? I'm going to assume here, like Job, that's it's not our own ignorance or foolishness that's landed us in the suffering.

Well there is a lot of good and bad things that happens every day and some of which we do not know why they happened. But we sure do know why bad things happened to Job, because God had a bet to win with Satan. Oh and lets not forget about Job's wife, who suffered too. She lost her children due to this same bet. Most importantly 10 innocent people (along with many of Job's servants) are dead because of a bet. While Job's health was restored in the end, the live of the children nor the servants are restored. Job's servants and childeren are simply replaced by some new kids. Now anyone who has lost a child knows the pain will never leave no matter how many children they have in the future. And what about the pain and suffering the families and friends of these servants are feeling? Did they not have people that loved and would miss them if they died? And all God has to say in return for all this bloodshed and subsequent sorrow is "because I am smater and stronger then you therefore my ways are justice. That does not even make sense, how is that an example of justness???😕

What if the reason God allowed things to happen to Job and his wife was to show hundreds of thousands of Jewish people and Christians the right way to handle suffering ? Or to quote Jeremiah - can the pot say to the potter - why have you made me like this ?
@yhli2539
@yhli2539 5 жыл бұрын
@@landonbiblestudy To indirectly allow suffering to teach a lesson is different from allowing suffering through direct action. For example if Job's servants and children died because of some horrible freak accident that could only been stopped if God stepped in and protected them. For an all knowing God to make a bet with Satan that would result in the deaths of so many people shows a total disregard for human life, a lack of empathy and compassion for the emotional and mental well being of these who lots there love ones..... You are making an assumption that God was trying to teach job and his wife how to handle suffering, if that was the case I am sure God would have included that when he was boasting about his intelligence and power.

@@yhli2539 I feel where you come from, I have to preface it by saying that I'm not a christian, but an agnostic that believes that there still space for the existence of god in light of everything that science has taught us along the centuries. This book in the bible is just a great book, but in the end is just a book written by people, even if there was "divinal" inspiration the author was still a person. If there is a god, how do you think we would communicate with you, how would he make you understand complex ideas, you can think about the analogy of us trying to teach a dog how to learn to speak. If there is a creator, he would be in such a higher level that we wouldn't be able to communicate ideas efficiently. So to make us understand we has to tell us stories of things we can relate to, in this particular case a story with things that people from that time in history could relate to. We don't know if Job even existed, probably it never happened, the morals embedded is what you should be discussing. Do you admire Job? I think any reasonable person would, he remained loyal and just until the end, he wanted to understand why, but even if god would tell him, we wouldn't be able to understand it. So, what is left for us to do in this life in the face of uncertainty, suffering and misfortune? Live your life in justice, be correct, be loyal, do not despair in fear and trust that God is by your side, that you're listened to, and not forgotten. To answer your direct questions about the suffering of those characters in the bible, do you think those stories happened? Or do you think that it is just a story to make us understand and feel things, in my opinion this is a fictional tale, nobody suffered, but us during the reading as we identified with the characters, that is purpose of the imagery and narrative of the book Job.

@@landonbiblestudy but we are told it is literally because of a bet. And his children are simply pawns for god to prove a point. Did god think that letting job know it was a bet would overwhelm his feeble little brain? I bet it wouldn’t (hah bet pun) I mean you can look at it from an angle that ignores the whole thing about betting but don’t you think at that point your just bending the story towards your preconceived notions of what you want the story to mean? I think this just means that the writer of this book was on some holy religious herb and made some contradictory sections while under the herbal influence. Just my opinion.

Job specifically is very difficult, when i read it in Hebrew i can feel how ancient it is - its difficult to convey this unless Hebrew is your first language. just by reading a few words you can see that this is genesis level ancient. Every Christian studying the old testament must make an effort to study the original texts at least once in their life, its difficult but remember - its the language of Jesus himself. I think its the best way to connect with your own beliefs. Good luck mates

Interesting view, but saying that Satan is portrayed as the evil enemy is wrong. In this book the figure of "the Satan" (Al Satan in hebrew) is more of an attorney or prosecutor, which is in charge of making sure people complies with God's law. If Satan was the evil force, God wouldn't be talking to him.

For they (Israelites) drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ" Colossians 1:16 "For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. The issue of the book is not "why do bad things happen?" but "why do bad things happen to Job?" Job is not Everyman. And the answer to that question is not at all a mystery; Job does not lack wisdom to understand it. The book is perfectly clear: Job suffers is because Jehovah made a bet with the devil, wagering Job's well-being (and the lives of many innocent creatures) to score a point with an adversary. God's tirade about Job's lack of understanding that comes late in the book is merely so much bluster to frighten Job into silence and submission. Why doesn't God just tell him the truth, when the truth is evident to the reader? His reticence suggests that God is rather ashamed of what he has done, and perhaps with good reason. It is Job, not Jehovah, who is the moral hero of this text.

Hey Karol, Let me explain why I disagree. God is the giver of life and He can do whatever he pleases - we see things through a human lens and one of the points of Job is to see that God does what He does in complete righteousness and holiness and we get to choose if we trust him or not.

We can continue but no, I don’t accept that god knows more things because he repeatedly asks questions we can answer.

This book is, even by OT standards, absolutely terrible. It depicts God as a heartless monster. In my opinion, the low point is when at the end, God gives Job seven new children as a reward, as if children were replaceable. Unbelievable.

Hey Lauter, Your comment is one of the subjects of the book - can man understand God's ways ? And God gave Job 10 children, not that that would change your point of course - which I think is a fair one, except it does not seem to take into consideration heaven and eternity - wherein Job is reunited with all of his children. I suppose one of the questions of Job is - can you accept God's ways even if they don't make sense ?
@lauterunvollkommenheit4344
@lauterunvollkommenheit4344 4 жыл бұрын
@@landonbiblestudy Of course, you're right: Job got ten new children from God. I didn't take eternity into consideration because the book doesn't either, probably because Jews at that time didn't yet believe in it (as you obviously know). Job explicitly says that there's nothing after death. But even if there is, how do you know he was reunited with his children? Am I missing something? For me, the question is: do you really believe that God would make an innocent person suffer, and others die just because he made a bet with the Satan? "For no reason", as He himself says?
