WWII was that tiny sliver of time where the dive bomber could exist. Before, the air frames wouldn't handle the stress. After, jets made them impractical. The Dauntless, the Val, and the Stuka were absolute marvels of engineering.
@kettch777

The Dauntless actually wasn't a great design. It was slow and unmaneuverable compared to the fighters of the day and even other dive bombers. It's why it was replaced in the primary combat role in 1942 by the Helldiver.

And the Blackburn Skua...which was pretty much a contemporary of the Stuka... and was the first dive bomber to sink a major warship ..(in fact the first aircraft to do so) The German cruiser Konigsberg on 10 April 1940 during the Norwegian campaign. Unlike the Stuka it also served as a fighter in the early stages of the War... (the Fleet Air Arm was big on "Multi Role!" ) ...quickly outclassed in that role unsurprisingly, but it had some some success before its withdrawal from the front line in 1941.

Stuka also was not so great, Stuka was step backwards in aviation because she was good only under few circumstances and with air dominance, she was able handle only one role and history shows that step forward was a multirole plane with multi purpose armament. P-38 Lightning Me262 or FW190 Typhoon and in my opinion post war soviet IL series.

I seem to recall the real attack being far more interesting; the dauntless squadron that launched the attack didn’t just bomb randomly, they aimed for the newly painted Ashai (rising sun emblem/flag) painted upon the decks. It provided such a fantastic aiming point they couldn’t miss.

Really? I’m not sure where you found this information but to me that seems more like Hollywood blasphemy, and also, Aiming for the rising sun painted on deck would have been impractical because of its location on the carrier. Plus we know where the bombs landed on the carriers, if you don’t believe me search it up on google, but that’s just my own opinion.

@@Debottro - I'm saying that in the movie there's so much flak enveloping the plane that the pilot can't even see the freaking carrier and yet despite flying through that for seemingly forever he takes zero damage. Dives in, drop the bomb, pulls out without a scratch on the fuselage and even manages to take out an AA battery on what looks like a Kongo-class battleship on his way out. A little too unrealistic if you ask me.

Yeah, think about it.... going from 20,000 feet to ~ 2000 feet at 350 miles an hour... so fast they have to throw on air brakes because if they go any faster the forces will rip the wings off. They have to dive into the batteries on a capital warship and her escorts, watching your squadron mates get blown up in front of you and the enemy CAP (combat air patrol) coming after you! Yeah its an express elevator ride to hell and you'd absolutely need balls of steel!

Can I ask what is genuinely wrong with this sequence from an accuracy standpoint point. As far as I can tell it’s pretty much authentic and accurate even if certain details are reordered or Changed. It’s cheesy and propaganda but it’s historically authentic and grounded and seems to be a valid depiction of these events
@MisterGutsy420

@Frizzleman something big I think this movie missed the point of was how much luck was involved in the real battle. The film, this scene specifically makes it seem as though the pilots knew exactly where the carrier groups were when in fact, they were completely lost and stumbled upon the Japanese fleet. It plays in the propaganda you were speaking of. The action is great, the tactics look historically sound BUT, like OP said, it's just so exaggerated when it really didn’t need to be. The way the battle played out irl is compelling in itself
@Frizzleman
@Frizzleman Ай бұрын
@@MisterGutsy420 isn’t there a scene in the movie when one of the American pilots finds a single Japanese destroyer and is able to lead his squadron to the rest of the fleet after hours of searching? Is that not real history being depicted on screen? We absolutely see the element of luck involved in the battle but it is obviously condensed for narrative and film making purposes. I find the film perfectly compelling idk what more they could have done.

@@Frizzleman The IJN ships are far too close together. There was no close escort (apart from a plane guard) the carriers were on their own and relied on manoeuvre as much as flak. IJN flak is far too good in the film. IRL IJN flak accounted for only 2 or 3 a/c in the whole battle. Shattered Sword by Parshall & Tully is a very good account of the battle which demolishes a few myths.

I learned that there are ways to lose a war, and how you lose a war is important. After the war, when the spirit of the samurai, Japanese men who fought to the end for their country, spread to the world, Japan🇯🇵, even though it was a defeated country, would be respected by the world and would never be looked down upon, and it was a strategy to believe that Japan🇯🇵 would be able to survive. It was also a strategy to give courage to the remaining Japanese people and future generations born after the war by knowing that there were ancestors who had protected the country to this extent, to convey how cruel and extraordinary war is, and to convey the importance of peace, and to hope for efforts toward peace. Japan🇯🇵 is a spirit unique to Japan, where people are considerate of others and step aside with dignity. We should feel happy just to have been born in such a country. Unfortunately, many Japanese people today are weaklings who only put on airs.

The usual Hollywood BS. A dive bombing attack with planes in close formation, with the leader giving orders while on the dive!🤦🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m sorry that you gen X and millennials missed the age of good movies, but the 1970 Tora Tora Tora and the 1976 Midway, were much better at depicting these historical battles.

攻撃機のデタラメな機動を描き米軍パイロットを美化しすぎのリアリティー無しの映画。 観なくて良かった!

Le portaerei giapponesi erano delle bagnarole! Avevano i ponti in legno, per forza sono bastate poche bombe!
