One of my all time favorite franchises. I saw the original on tv in the 90's and then was constantly renting all 5 from my local video store. I remember they had them in the 'cult classics' section.

As someone who has watched all 9 Planet Of The Apes movies, & I have noticed that the 3 Andy Serkis movies are essentially reboots of the 3rd, 4th, & 5th Roddy McDowall movies; Rise (2011) is Escape (1971), Dawn (2014) is Conquest (1972), & War (2017) is Battle (1973). The teaser for Kingdom makes me hopeful that we will get modern day reboots of the Original (1968) & Beneath (1970) as well.

I’d say Rise (2011) is a combination of Escape and Conquest. Dawn and War both feel like if Battle was made into a 2 parter

As an 8 year old who watched all original 5 in a 2 day span when my cousin got the VHS boxset for Christmas, the wonder of these movies will never go away. I loved this vid obvi, but I don’t know if a movie franchise has ever been more deserving of a long form documentary. Would have been a great idea for the studio to put together before the new films come out. Would have been an east mid covid money maker.

Honestly, I think the Andi Serkis trilogy isn't necessarily a "reboot", but more of "the ORIGINAL" timeline that lead to the Original 5 movies. Yes, there are some inconsistencies, such as what year the Liberty ship launched, which contained Taylor and his crew (and Brent's expedition to find him was never mentioned, but there WAS a long time jump between Rise and Dawn). Cornelius, Zira, and Dr. Milo travelling back in time "reset" the events, because they technically brought the "virus" that made Apes smart to begin with, with them. That kinda "retcons/explains" how the apes went from "primitive" to "higher order" in the span of less than 20 years. But I'm okay with it. It also explains, in part, how the humans in the original movie are "animal like", and the "nuclear war" that took place altered some humans in a way that made them resistant to the virus and mutated their DNA for Beneath. It's a little convoluted, but the most recent trilogy can still fit in with the original 5 movies. I'm waiting to see what we get with Kingdom, as it could very well set the stage for the original 5 movies even more. The only real "outlier" is the Mark Wahlberg movie, which is pretty much a "self-contained" story. It was also (in real life) a "proof of concept" and "gauge of interest" movie. Also, also, does anyone watch the fan-made "Evening with Dr. Z" (I think that's what it's called) show that's on KZbin? It's pretty amusing, and is directly related to the Original movies in the context of the makeup work. It's kinda like an "Ape version" of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, except "Dr. Z" (looks a lot like Dr. Zaius, but obviously doesn't use that name so he doesn't get sued) is the host of the show.

Even as a kid in the 90's watching this every chance I got when it aired on TV, I understood it was a special amazing movie. Not as exciting as an action scifi like Star Wars, or in my opinion the less memorable newer Planet of the Apes. Yet every time I see it it's hard to deny how much of a smart philosophical story it holds. Everything about it captures your imagination, and makes you think. As I kid I didn't fully comprehend the story being told, but as I got older I understand asking the questions presented as you watch, and fitting pieces together is the point. It's about human nature, science, religion, philosophy, war, all that stuff and more. The movie isn't perfect, but it's a piece of art with concepts that will remain timeless.

I've been seeing several Planet of the Apes videos come up lately, many of them fresh. I have seen all of them although it's a long time since I've seen the original sequels. I recently listened to the audiobook of Pierre Boulle's Novella. A lot of differences to the movie but when you look deeper there are a lot of parallels too. There was an incredible amount of dignity in the writing. I thought there was an urban legend about the American Flag having more than 50 stars but I counted them and it's 50. Anyway, great review.

My favourite piece of trivia for the film is the final words in the film "God Damn you all to Hell!" which was considered too offensive. But an impassioned appeal to MPAA by Charlton Heston, where he said the "offensive" language was justified given the gravity of the situation.

No ape movie is going to top the original version. It definitely was like a long Twilight Zone film with the twist ending. I own the first 5 on remastered VHS. I need to get it on Blu-ray eventually. The 2001 version was ok, but it lagged through the ending. It was a similar twist like the original version, and you can't help but wonder what might have happened in the next film. The new films are okay. I also own the TV series on DVD, and I watched some years ago the animated series on HULU way back when. The acting in the first film was really good. For its time, the makeup was good, but it might seem dated compared to today.
