Welcome to a rare comedy focused episode of The Best Movie You Never Saw, about a movie I loved as a kid that doesn’t super hold up forty years later, but is still kinda fun - Johnny Dangerously. A gangster comedy in the vein of Airplane, Johnny Dangerously is probably a movie a lot of younger viewers wouldn’t really get because it satirizes James Cagney gangster movies from the 30s and 40s, but if you like older movies and its star, Michael Keaton, this one is a treat.

TOP SECRET, UHF, HOT SHOTS, and this. Excellent choices to describe what comedies in the ‘80s felt like, and I loved them all! Each completely different and great in its own way, but mostly sight gags and dirty jokes for the most part. As far as maturity goes, Rob Reiner was the G.O.A.T. of comedy directors then because of two stand alone iconic films that are to this day considered mileposts and classics of comedic films: THIS IS SPINAL TAP, and the romantic comedy fairy tale THE PRINCESS BRIDE. Both are epic, and continually quoted to this day, as the entire tapestry of them has been fully sewn in the fabric of American culture. Lots come close to the best (talkin’ to You, Wes Anderson), but Reiner’s final work is unsurpassed.

This movie was everywhere on cable back when I was a kid...so I don't know about the whole "never saw" thing. I still remember first watching the scene where the guys were shuffling around with giant testicles and finding it hilarious, but for me not as many of the jokes hit home as they did for Airplane, or even Top Secret.

I can very easily believe people in their twenties have never heard of this. I have college aged relatives who haven't heard of Close Encounters. Unless they have a special interest in old movies, most have no interest in old stuff. It's not like when we grew up and that's what played on tv all the time. Streaming has very much limited and siloed a wider knowledge of media.

Huh! My brother and I were just talking about this movie and JoBlo does an ep on it. Good timing. I think this still holds up pretty well so long as you know what you are getting into. My brother and I still occasionally sling a "Farg you icehole" at each other. You should to one on Night Shift too if you haven't. That actually came up when my bro and I were talking as well, as they came out fairly close to each other. Night Shift is another kind of forgotten comedy that is well worth checking out. Keaton is hilarious and its also worth seeing Henry Winkler move as far away from the Fonzie persona as possible. Johnny Dangerously and Night Shift would make for a great old comedy pairing for a movie night.
