What Happened to TIMOTHY DALTON?

For over a decade, Roger Moore had the task of living up to everything that Sean Connery had put in place as 007. And while some will defend Moore forever, we can’t forget the clown costumes and slide whistles and gondola chases and so, so much more that pushed James Bond into an uncharted level of ridiculousness. Perhaps all of this could have been prevented had Timothy Dalton not been so green, turning down ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE because he was in his mid-20s. That’s all hypothetical, of course, but Timothy Dalton would go on to reinvent James Bond in a way that may not have sat with contemporary audiences but marked a true challenge for what it meant to carry the torch. Dalton played 007 just twice; and with that, we’d challenge you to name just as many worthwhile post-Bond movies from the under-appreciated actor.Let’s find out: WTF Happened to…TIMOTHY DALTON?

Timothy Dalton was the very first actor to portray Bond as a serious, dark and gritty reinventing James Bond long before Daniel Craig. He may have only done 2 Bond Movies but at least he has had the honour of having the 2 best entries in the Series. Definitely my favourite Bond, as he stayed true to the original Fleming Books.

He was Bond twice and they are both among the very best Bond films, so yeah he was great. Definitely the best actor who ever played Bond, but is he the best Bond? I still think Sir Sean is hard to beat. I'd put Dalton in a solid second place, with Brosnan third.

Timothy Dalton is terrific, probably the last of a generation in the classically trained Shakespearean actors. I think after Bond he kinda had a Slump with filmmakers just using him because of his bond connection. However when 2007 rolled around Hot Fuzz really re-established him. We then got him in Chuck, Penny Dreadful, Doom Patrol, The Crown, and Yellowstone 1923. It’s a shame we never got his 3rd bond film.

Dalton could be dark in The Living Daylights as was more serious and brought back the edge that was missing in the Moore films including the scene when his friend Saunders was killed and even fellow M16 agents at the beginning of film could see the anger in his eyes and tone of voice. When he knocked out Puskins guard and hit Pushkin when tried to warn his guard and saying “That was damned stupid could tell Bond wasn’t messing around and could be more like Connery and the Daniel Craig of his time.

My respect and love for Dalton’s portrayal as James Bond has only grown over the years. He was trying so hard to break Bond free from “the formula” and yet was unfortunately impossibly chained to it. It also didn’t help that he was following Roger Moore who, in the 7 films he had done, had ingrained his lighter, more funny, more relaxed Bond into the psyche of the film going public. What I absolutely love about Dalton’s Bond is that he had all these subtleties to his performance. He wasn’t trying to play Bond as a one liner superhero stereotype. He was a man. An imperfect man who at times, let his emotions show through when things got the better of him. For the first time in a LONG time, you FELT what it was like to be Bond and much of the time, it was NOT pleasant. Dalton made Bond once again a man you could genuinely believe was who he said he was. As far as I’m concerned, Dalton walked so Craig could run.

Roger Moore was making the franchise too much money. If I had my way, Moore would have finished the 80's.
@ricardocantoral7672
@ricardocantoral7672 29 күн бұрын
@@stickmanbw I think keeping Moore so long ultimately hurt the series in the long run. Between '81 and '85, younger action heroes made the Bond series look rather antiquated. They should have wiped the slate clean at the beginning of decade and started with a new, harder edged Bond. Even Moore admitted that he was way too old when he did A View To a Kill.
@doctorvanya
@doctorvanya 27 күн бұрын
The way I understand it Moore was ready to step down after Moonraker. However FYEO was John Glen's directorial debut (he previously handled second unit) and didn't want to start with an untested Bond. Then 1983 was the 'Battle of the Bonds' and Cubby Broccoli didn't want a new Bond going up against Connery in NSNA.
@ricardocantoral7672
@ricardocantoral7672 26 күн бұрын
@@doctorvanya Yes, those are fair reasons not to appoint a new Bond but 1985, there should have been a switch. Also, it would have been highly desirable to get a new director and writer.

Ironically For Your Eyes Only was one of Roger Moore's more serious Bond films. It would have fitted Dalton perfectly. He could have carried Bond for the entire 80s like Connery did in the 60s, Moore in the 70s, Brosnan in the 90s and Craig in the 2000s

The best bond song and bond beginning to a bond film is The Living Daylights. The best Bond is Sean Connery. The Best R-Rated Bond movie is Licence To Kill and yes since 2006 the digital version of Licence To Kill is the R-Rated version. It's way different than the vhs dvd laser disc pg-13 version up to that point. You can even see a youtube video about the differences. Some people who worked on the film snuck in the R-rated on digital in 2006 and it makes the movie even more awesome. I even have the pg-13 and r-rated versions. I just thought it was great that it got the release that it deseed. 007

And both The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill made a lot of money worldwide especially Daylights which outgrossed many of Roger's movies. Unfortunately Licence to Kill got lost in the 1989 summer crush in the US but it did well elsewhere still making money for MGM/UA. He would have got a third film if not for the MGM legal issues which halted Bond films for the next six years.

So Timothy Dalton is one of the few Hollywood actors I've met in person... (I live in the midwest)... My father is a well known antique dealer, and has sold many items to him over the years... Dalton has a love for antiques and history as well, and that's probably why he's in so many period pieces... it was the mid 90s and I was probably 10 or 11 and was at an antique show with my dad and after he went by, he told me who it was and he was a james bond... I remember telling my friends who were too young to know that there was another bond besides Roger Moore or Sean Connery... I myself was puzzled until years later when I saw the movies

one of the better vids from JBlo....Dalton for many who appreciate fine performances has been something of a mystery on why his career never took off the way it should have, he starred in one of the best 007 movies - Living Daylights which certainly set the stage for Craig's super-serious Bond movies....and he lights up every movie or TV series he's in .. whether that b Jane Eyre or the excellent Penny Dreadful which has the distinction of being one of the few TV projects to utilize great performers like him, Eva Green and even Josh Hartnett to perfection. I think someone like Nolan should cast him in his next movie since we have clearly seen what gr8 performances he can squeeze from his actors like in Oppenheimer, a movie that was recognized mostly for its great performances...Nolan and Dalton is a no-brainer.

You forgot the movie he did with Brooke Shields called "Brenda Starr, Reporter" (1986)-he went straight to filming "The Living Daylights" (1987). The Starr movie didn't come out until 1992 due to a lot of issues with the producers, studios, film rights, etc. Sad because it would've benefited coming out when Batman, Dick Tracy, and the other comic book character movies were relevant.

I think the reason Licence to Kill didn't really work at the time was because audiences were too used Roger Moore's more lighthearted Bond that such a hard (yet sort of predicted with TLD) turn left cinema goers a bit too frazzled. It would be a bit like making a gritty hardcore version of Batman in the early 70s just after the Adam West show finished. But The Dark Knight Returns showed that people could and did get used to a more gritty Batman which paved the way for Tim Burton's Batman. Edit: From what I have seen I think the James Bond series was going to go back to lighthearted stuff with Dalton's unmade third film. The script was a lot more lighthearted even featuring Bond fighting an Android as a villain. When it exploded he'd be standing miles away and the head of the android would land his feet making a stupid face
