Love this - there's so much captured on this otherwise and often missed. The exchanges between jockeys from the genuine and sincere words of good luck and best wishes at the start, the loud shouts mid-race to tell others to keep out the way and then heartfelt congratulations at the end. I competed in XC and endurance riding for years and was always big on encouragement and praise in-between jumps more so with a tired horse which could be anything from a quick pat and “Good lad” to lots of casual but humorous effing and jeffing mixed in with “Whooops” Euurggh!!!” and “WHEEE!!” There are times a horse really doesn't have anything else left in which case you have to pull up. Jockeys didn't used to have that worry once upon a time but we've moved on since then thankfully. The few times I made that mistake (instantly and bitterly regretted) the horse let me know by running out or refusing a fence sending me arse over tit. One or two would clip fences we should have cleared at a leisurely trot so I knew they were all out, pulled up and retired. I lived and rode this race - shatting myself at the first fence and gasping in excitement after safely clearing the last and feeling that sense of “Holy shit - we're over and almost home sweet - c'mon we can do this long run home C'MON!!” and you can see those two ears pricking back up and getting those last few drops out the tank. Brilliant ride and partnership. PS. Canal Turn made me go "Eeeeeeesssshhhiiitt..."

Courtney Mears you can’t speak for every trainer. A lot of horses are injured and worse because of this “sport” . I’m not a fan of this type of racing. Of course I can’t speak for every rider, but with the amount of dead, injured, filmed abuse and reports there are a lot of bad riders out there.

They don't hit them they use the sound of it
@issnake11094 жыл бұрын
Sorry in advance for the length of this, but.... They most certainly did whip the horse. And yes, it does hurt. Controversial to popular belief, horses do not have thick skin. A horse's epidermis is actually as thin and thinner than a human's epidermis. Couple that with how many nerve endings are packed in there, noting the fact that they can feel a fly land on them, and you wind up with an animal that has very sensitive skin. A whip/crop is supposed to be used as a directional tool, as horses are the pressure and release type. And, they do feel the pain, even if they don't show it. They, as well as many other prey animals, have evolved to not show pain. Think about it. If you were a wild horse and looked to be injured or in pain, who would the predators go after? If you whip yourself and it hurts, it hurts the horse. There are actually quite a few studies about this. Once again, sorry for the length.

@MrNonch18 жыл бұрын
Here we go...wondered when the animal cruelty bollox was going to surface. Jockeys know that if a horse won't go for one smack, it certainly won't go for two. Often, the whip is used to keep the horse balanced, or it's against their boot to keep the rhythm- the horse doesn't get unmercifully beaten when it's already trying it's best- the jockey knows if ever a horse came back with weals on it, not only would he have to face the vet and the stewards, but the wrath of the owner and trainer as well!. It is very unfortunate that Many Clouds died, and he gave everything he had, but to try and point the finger at the jockey for " whipping the horse furiously" is totally ludicrous, but at least it's a change from how cruel it is making them jump fences. Lastly, if you've got half a ton of horse, going at 30 mph, and he doesn't want to jump a fence- what is the ONLY outcome?

Does using whips hurt horses? I use whips sometimes when I have riding lessons, which I go to every week and my instructor keeps telling me that it doesn't hurt them?
@pbpretzel36745 жыл бұрын
No, it is merely an instruction aid. The whips in racing have changed a lot over years and is just padded foam nowadays. Jockeys can get fined/bammed for excessive whip use as well. Better padded than a dressage or riding crop.

Back in the late 50's or early 60's, there was a thoroughbred race horse called Noballsatall, He was a gelding, some of the announcers were bothered by having to call out his name in a race. a different politically or morally speech standard back then. I think I may still have the old newspaper clipping in my scrap book, don't remember if it was in the Chicago Sun Times or in one of the 2 San Francisco news papers at the time. Loved this video, got an Adrenalin rush watching it. Don't see much steeple chase racing here in USA, it's even hard to find harness racing , on tv ,much less at a track. Thanks to all the various racing channels and KZbin, I can get my fill.

Nathalie Swahn they do love it. The jockey is just trying to ensure that the horse is going as fast as he can. This is not a fear tactic, the horses are usually trained to respond to these cues, like clicking to make a horse go faster and squeezing with you legs to encourage them to go faster. Jockeys can’t squeeze the horse with their legs, so they use their voice. They also wave the crop beside the horse’s face, as they’re only allowed to hit the horse a certain number of times

A horse is much more likely to be injured in a fall due to the speed and their physiology. Then they are much more likely to be shot if the injury is going to prevent them racing at full capacity.
@Saturaz5 жыл бұрын
Yes, but thankfully these last few years there has been hardly any losses to the grand national. The jumps get less harsh every year, taking into consideration where the horses make faults so that they can improve their time on the track. I don't know if you have ever watched secretariat, but that just shows how much some horses love what they do. Horses are lots more sturdy than humans and although some of the falls do look nasty, they get up hardly without a scratch in the grand national. I agree its awful to look at, but the chances of severe injury lately is not very high. Hope you can watch it this year without feeling too bad :)
@maisommerstedt3165 жыл бұрын
@@Saturaz I Will not say that horses always are more sturdy then humans because when they fall over a jump or fall when they run because the tripped the have all of their own body weight falling on them too so if a horse lands on it's head or neck they break their neck because of the weight crushing it. and even tho there did not die as many horses this year does not make it less disgusting. horse racing is cruel they whip the shit out of their horses most horses are abused and if they are not fast egnough they kill them. this disciplin should get removed from the horse world just as some country disciplins. I hope that humans get in their right minds not to do this shit to a animal some day... It's a shame...

you may not know or you might but many clouds collapsed after the GN, it was discovered he had a breathing problem and was operated on. So for people who really don't know much about racing usually after a race the horse will be thoroughly checked out for problems. The reason they passed the channel turn on the second circuit was because of Balthzaar King who fell at that fence first time round. The horse survived his ordeal and did get up, he'd actually broken his ribs and was off the road for over a year but he did make it back. His life was in the balance for quite a time, so you see the horses are really well looked after.
@barbaradyson69518 жыл бұрын
the reason he collapsed was because of his breathing problem. He was operated on and then had no problems, in my day they called it hobdaying. but thank god its far more sophiscated today. Many Clouds was the statue of a horse that looked wrong it was just is presence. He looked like he couldn't run up the stairs half the time. but he was a smashing horse, so please don't blame the trainer or anyone associated with him for his death. I was out hacking my mare when she pulled up short and I thought her tendons had gone but even in trot she plummeted to the ground with a heart attack and was dead. she was only 10 as well. YOU CANNOT PREDICT A HEART ATTACK IN A HORSE. They can have fibrulating hearts like SS did and so did Night Nurse, the former horse won 32 races as well.
@barbaradyson69518 жыл бұрын
because some many people out there condemn racing as wicked and have been criticising colin tizzard and if you like abusing TC then saying MC shouldn't have been racing because of his breathing problem. So the more people who read and schinff about my comments at least I know that someone has read it; This last race he died from a heart attack. If you watch the end of the gn he's being attended to pretty quickly but he was exhausted but you don't know these things until they happen, then his problem was solved by an operation for his breathing. HE WAS A TRULY OLD FASHIONED TB, with loads and loads of guts.

they were using electro stimuli on him in the race he died. And Yes, I have felt electro stimuli, the kind used on horses, however at a much lower voltage obviously but it was still incredibly painfull and left me short of breath for days.
