As a connoisseur of of 'The Viet Nam War novel/account', (many if not most of which are both excellent novels/accounts AND written by veterans,) 'Fields Of Fire' by James Webb, is, IN MY OPINION, the stand-out novel about this conflict. What sets Webb's novel apart from such TRULY EXCELLENT books such as Del Vecchio's 'The 13th Valley', O'Brien's 'Going After Cacciato'/ 'The Things They Carried' / 'If I Die In A Combat Zone', Mason's 'Chickenhawk', Kovic's 'Born On The Fourth Of July', Marlantes 'Matterhorn', Hasford's 'Short Timers' and many other worthy books, is Webb's understanding and illustration of the complexities of that conflict as illustrated by the characters he creates... In Webb's novel, we see the characters we grow to understand and even inhabit not only DURING their war, but before, and, after. Webb also perfectly posits how soldiers ACTUALLY CHOOSE TO SERVE, (in that they fight out of duty/history/camraderie/necessity) but might have no real affinity or even understanding of any kind of Political nuance as to their situation. (Webb does in fact touch on this...) What appeals most to me as a reader, is the characters Webb so beautifully, even sympathetically draws, all are VASTLY DIFFERENT, yet, fully rounded and perfectly portrayed. Also, these different characters are personally LINKED AND CONNECTED by the situation (war) in which they find themselves. In 'Fields Of Fire' we see the true universal truth of actual combat. (Soldiers do NOT ultimately fight for a cause, they fight for each other in order to live so as to eventually escape the fighting...) *SPOILER ALERT!!!* For me, the image I took away from 'Fields Of Fire' is the scene where a crippled and traumatised veteran is asked to speak at an anti-war rally upon his return. He sees the anti war protesters NVA/VC flags and hears the "Ho Chi Minh Is Gonna Win" chants... (They don't understand as he does...) He lifts his crutch, points it at The Crowd and 'mimes' a 'Pow! Pow! Pow!') Beautiful. xx SF
