Just bought a copy of ‘Extreme Ownership’ and my God, worth every penny, super great read and very insightful. And Kudos to you Me Willink for actually taking the time to not only read aloud this piece of art but actually taking the time to break it down and appreciate how powerful this play is. Perhaps the day will come when men will be men again, men who long for the taste of adventure and camaraderie. To stand side by side with strangers and come out the end of such feats as brothers. To travel the seas and see the world on your own terms. “Perish the man whose mind is backwards now” said ‘Westmoreland’ to King Henry V, if this be the case then may all modern men perish, we have been sedated and dulled with cheap pleasure, may the day come when another Henry V rides through the midst and pulls man to a more glorious life.

re: alpha-behavior - in primate research, its been observed that the alpha primate spends most of their time looking after the well-being of others in their unit, managing resources, grooming others etc., and arbitrating disputes. in other words, aggressively taking "extreme ownership" for the welfare of the troop members! great episode, one of the best so far.

I looked up some of the speeches from the play cause I was so jacked up after watching this video and I came across the speeches Henry V did to woo Katharine to be his bride after he conquered France. After all he says (he could just take her because of his battle victory but wanted to convince her to love him) when he asks her if she will have him...I was in tears. Jocko's interpretation of Shakespeare opened my eyes to how powerful this play is and how well it was written.

I recognize this podcast from years ago . Your version of Shakespeare compared too a trained actor of the theatre. Is as comparing George C Scott ( whom many know he was an actual Marine Corps Sgt.) portrraying General Patton. Imagine if, a very skilled actor portrayed Patton instead? The literal effect is incomparable.

I don't know of Jocko will have the time to read this comment or not, but there's a timeless book he should incorporate into a or all of his podcasts: the very jewel of Vedic philosophy: The Bhagavad Gita. I always recommend the Juan Mascaro translation, because it's truest to the spirit of the original and it's the most poetic of all other translations. It's a concise little book that goes over the existential currents that drive us all, and it's about putting your duty before your ego. --- Another really good text worth including in this subject is the famous Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius's Meditations.

42:00 no you are right! There are a number of mistakes classically trained actors make in interpreting shakespere. And while there may be a fundamental difference between expressive and portraying acting and it may not be expressively a mistake, some things start at accent and follow in general pronunciation, so even those famous actors may be interpreting the piece wrongfully.

There is so much bro science in these early episodes 😂 Its true, squatting heavy does increase testosterone... transiently. It takes it from some time later though, same with the HGH and not eating after a work out. And the anabolic window is rubbish (besides maybe insulin sensitivity, but protein? Nope.) Ok.. the drama here in this podcast is over the top. Jocko was awesome on Joe Rogan so I tracked him down as he said he was starting a podcast, and I don't recall all this odd heavy drama speak like he is an overly serious character from the 300 movie, but I could only take it for a few minutes and had to bail. Is this normal for him in his podcasts?

+Aaron Zelinskas The knowledge and story telling is what I came back for - which I first heard on Rogan. I understand he is reading here, but I skipped through a few other podcasts and got kind of a similar over the top drama feel for the piece I scanned. IDK, maybe I will go back to #1 and give it a listen. I know he is hard, tough, serious about his beliefs, skilled, mean, and I can get down with all of that. But the 300 style of talking and emphasis.... waaay too much for me.

Next time I read some Shakespeare at my house, I will add in some over the top bravado, growling speak and drama like I am really an actor.

+SoCalFJ It's cool if you don't like his style. It's not a constant thing, but he does tend to do his podcasts like he's giving a speech; his thoughts are very structured and he has notes and an outline of what he's talking about (a lot different than how Joe does the JRE). Although, there are plenty of other times when his voice lightens up and he's not in intense-speaker-mode. He jokes around quite a bit and is fun to listen to.
